Michael Collins

Michael Collins was born in


Clonakilty, Co. Cork in 1890. He
was a member of Sinn Fin by
1908 and he joined the IRB in
1909. Collins strongly believed
that Irish Independence could
only be achieved by physical
force.he used the gorilla war
tactic.

He was the youngest of eight
children.

his father was also called Michael


Collins and when his father was
on his death bed he pointed at
Michael Collins and said that he
will do great things for his
country.micheal was six years old
when his father died. He
attended school and then worked
as a local journalist. before
moving to
London at the age of 15 to work
for the Gaelic Athletic Association.
He joined the Irish Republican
Brotherhood in 1909. By 1915 he
had risen though the ranks of the
London branch of the IRB and was
aware of the increasing tension in
Dublin between the various
factions of republicanism. He

returned home and helped in the


recruitment that was necessary
before any uprising could be
successful. He also joined the
Gaelic League, an organization
that stressed the use of the Irish
language as another means of
nationalistic expression.

the Easter rising
During the Easter Rising he was
second in command in the
General Post Office in Dublin with
Arthur griffin.Following the Rising,
Collins was arrested in Frongoch
prison camp in Wales. He was
released in December 1916.

Michael Collins was appointed as


Minister of Home Affairs by the
First Dail and in April 1919
Minister for Finance. He organized
the Dil loans, which financed the
republicans government.

the war of
independence
during the war of Independence
from 1919 to 1921. He organized
the supply of weapons and
developed a spy network. He also
had a Squad, a group of
assassins. On 21 November 1920,

Collinss Squad assassinated


fourteen British officers. The
British did not like what Collins did
so they sent in the Black and Tans
who fired shots at a crowd
watching a football match at
Croke Park. Twelve people were
killed and this day became known
as Bloody Sunday. Collinss
authority and influence were felt
at every level of the national
resistance movement.

the Treaty
A truce was finally agreed on 11
July 1921, and Collins was one of

the Irish delegates to negotiate


an Anglo-Irish Treaty. The Treaty
was signed on the 6 December
1921. Ireland obtaining a 32
county republic.collins said this
was a stepping stone for Ireland.

the civil war
due to the signing of the Treaty
the government split into proTreaty and anti-Treaty camps. A
vicious civil war from 1922 till
1923. between the pro-Treaty
Free State forces and the antiTreaty group. Collins was
Commander in Chief of the proTreaty army. On 22 August 1922

collins was ambushed at Bal na


mBlth near Macroom in Co. Cork.
He was shot in the head and died.
An estimated 300,000 people
attended his funeral in Dublin.
