This past weekend, April 30th

& May 1st the Gonzales Civic
Center was the site of the 2016
Jambalaya Festival Associations
Miss Gonzales Jambalaya
Festival Pageant.
The competition welcomed
7 contestants vying for the
titles of Teen & Miss Gonzales
Jambalaya Queen. Teen contestants included Sara Duplessis,
Destinee Mitchell and Lacey Alleman while Miss Contestants
included Tara Babin, Holly Stelly,
Alyssa Latuso and Alexis Ponvelle.
The competition began with
individual interviews Saturday
morning by a distinguished panel

of judges from various state

festivals across Louisiana.
Questions covered everything from
why they would like to be queen to
Jambalaya Festival history. The
competition continued again
Saturday evening at the official
Jambalaya Pageant where the girls
competed in evening gown and
onstage question.
Following the competition the
audience was introduced to the
many visiting queens from around
the state who attend to bid farewell
to the outgoing queen and
welcome the newly crowned
royalty. Also introduced were past

Before crowing of the new
royalty the reigning Teen Miss
Gonzales Jambalaya 2015, Miss
Grace Graugnard , daughter of
Rebecca and James Graugnard,
was escorted to the stage by her
father, where she took her final
walk as queen. Miss Graugnard
addressed the crowd speaking of
the deeply rooted bond between
the festival and the community.
She thanked the Jambalaya
Festival Association and her family
for all of the love and support
shown during her reign and the
many memories she has collected
over the past year.

daughter of Brian and Jennifer
Mitchell. She attends Dutchtown
High School where she is the
PR Chair for the FCCLA and a 2
year Gallant Griffin Academic
Award recipient. She has
aspirations in the Culinary Arts and
hopes, one day, to have her own
restaurant.

Holly Alyse Stelly is the 21 year

Annual Jambalaya Festival to be
held this Memorial Day Weekend
May 27 29. As the JFA Queen
she will serve as an ambassador
for the Association and for the
City of Gonzales by travelling
throughout the state of Louisiana
visiting festivals and pageants. She
will also attend the Mystick Krewe
of Louisianans Mardi Gras Ball in
Washington DC in 2017 and the
Louisiana
Association of Fairs and Festivals
Queen of Queens Pageant
in February.

National Womens Health Week in Ascension Parish. President Matassa presented the proclamation to members of St. Elizabeth Hospital Womens Advisory Council attending the May 5 parish council meeting in Donaldsonville.
Kerry Songy, chairperson with the Womens Advisory Council, said National
Womens Health Week was initiated by a coalition of public and private organizations, dedicated to raising awareness of womens health issues and to empower women of Ascension Parish to make their health a priority. We thank

Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa proclaimed the month of April
2016 as Fair Housing Month in Ascension Parish. President Matassa presented the proclamation to Martha Collins, parish grants officer, during the
April 21 parish council meeting in Gonzales. This month is the 48th anniversary of the National Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of
1968. The National Fair Housing Law guarantees all citizens the right to
freely choose a home of their choice and prohibits discrimination concerning

Due to current events, I have
postponed publishing Part 2 of
Using Trusts for Medicaid until
next month. While I would never
wish for Prince Rogers Nelsons
death or the complex legal
proceedings that his family may
now have to face, such a public
depiction of what the lack of
estate planning will do communi-

cates far more than any amount

of general legal advice ever could.
On April 21, 2016, the 57-yearold pop star was found deceased
at his home in Minnesota. Prince
left behind an estate estimated at
$300 million, with no wife, no
children, and apparently, no will.
After spending 37 years
developing his music and image,
and famously fighting to control
how and where they were used, it
is unfortunate that his lack of
planning now leaves the control
of his legacy in the hands of
the state.
Judge Kevin Eide recently
appointed Bremer Trust as special
administrator of the Prince
Nelson estate at the request of
Princes sister, Tyka Nelson.
Bremer Trust will be in charge of
proving the absence of a will,
managing the appraisal of Princes
name, image, likeness and
property, paying off debts,
deciding what to do with
intellectual property (like the
trove of unpublished music that
Prince was rumored to have),
inventorying his assets, and filing
an estate tax return for the
estimate of his net worth. Aside
from considering that Prince may
have never wanted Bremer Trust
acting on his behalf, this process

assets to pay the estate taxes

before they receive any benefit
from the estate. Even if they are
all in agreement, lawsuits from

their inheritance to taxes, are left
without means of support that
their deceased loved one may
have never intended, and face
numerous other hardships that

lengthy court debate on its own
as is now the case with Michael

To add insult to injury, because
the value of Princes estate
exceeds $5.45 million, the federal
governments tax rate of 40% and
Minnesotas tax rate of 16% will
immediately lay claim to more
than half of his assets. With
proper planning, it is possible that
these tax consequences may have
been avoided, or at least
minimized. And while Prince is
said to have been generous to a
number of charities none of
that helps his legacy now without
written direction to leave
charitable donations.
Next, according to Minnesota
intestate law, Princes one full
sister and five half-siblings would
each receive an equal share of his
remaining estate. But Princes
estate being valued at $300
million doesnt mean that he had
that many cash assets. This means
that the siblings may have to sell

mobile and video advertising, are

Programmatic
Buying

Programmatic or automated
buying has become the new norm
in the advertising world. With
this form of digital advertising,
software is used to purchase
digital advertising. This eliminates
the traditional process of things
such as request for proposals and
negotiations. AdRoll conducted
research that found 87 percent of
marketers are seeing greater
return on programmatic buying
than traditional media buying.
With a percentage that high
theres no question as to why
traditional media buying has taken
the back seat to programmatic
buying. Advertisers have started
making these purchases without
actually speaking to a live person.
This process has made
transactions both more efficient
and effective. This type of ad
spending has proven to be so
effective that many brands have
said they plan to move their
entire display ad spending
through programmatic channels.

is one third of their total waking

hours. Statistics as such, is why

all things mobile including
advertisement. Facebook ended
its quarter at $5.8 billion, with
$5.6 billion being from ad
revenue; of that $5.6 billion
$4.5 billion was generated by
mobile advertising. Theres no
denying that mobile is now a very
vital part of digital advertising.

Consumers are spending more

time on computers, smartphones,
and tablets, and theyre probably
not spending that time reading.

not heal
- A color change of the oral tissues

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid
tobacco and alcohol use.
Regular dental check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are
essential in the early detection of cancerous and
pre-cancerous conditions.
Many types of abnormal cells can develop in the
oral cavity in the form of red or
white spots. Some are harmless and benign, some
are cancerous and others are pre-cancerous, meaning they can develop into cancer if not detected
early and removed. (American Cancer Society)
Finding and removing epithelial dysplasias before
they become cancer can be one of the most effective methods for reducing the incidence of cancer.
Knowing the risk factors and seeing your dentist
for oral cancer screenings can help prevent this
deadly disease. Routine use of the Pap smear since
1955, for example, dramatically reduced the incidence and mortality rates for cervical cancer in the
United States.
Oral cancer is often preceded by the presence of
clinically identifiable premalignant changes. These
lesions may present as either white or red patches
or spots. Identifying white and red spots that show
dysplasia and removing them before they become
cancer is an effective method for reducing the incidence and mortality of cancer.

St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department

holds Awards Banquet
This past Saturday Night, the
St. Amant Volunteer Fire
Department held their annual
awards and installation of
officers banquet. The setting
this year was the Granda Venue,
and a packed house of volunteer
firefighters, fire chiefs, assistant
chiefs, elected officials, family
and friends were on hand to see
who would be the big winners
on the night.
The night began with St. Amant
Volunteer Fire Department
Chief James LeBlanc reminding
all of the service our local
volunteers provide to the many
men, women and children
throughout the St. Amant
community.

Many of you know, this is a

total Volunteer Department that
responds to well over 700 calls
per year. We operate four fire
stations in the St. Amant
Community with 13 trucks. We
also operate a boat rescue team
on the river. Tonight our
members are awarded for their
accomplishments that took
place in 2015. These Volunteers
live for responding to... the
needs of our residents. It's so
hard to believe that I have been
blessed to be a Volunteer Fire
Chief in this Parish for the past
30 years. Yes, things are not
always perfect, yes we make
mistakes but remember these
are the people that leave their
families daily to respond to
yours. The best reward in the
world as a Fire Chief, is to see
the smiles on all these Volunteer
Firefighters faces when they are
appreciated for their accomplishments. God Bless each and
every one of you, and never
forget, the people of our
community will always be our
#1 priority, stated Chief
Officer James E. LeBlanc.

Step Up, Whos Gonna

Fill Their Shoes?
Not long ago I was nominated to become a board member of the East Ascension Sportsmans League. I declined,
but they would not take no for an answer and suggested I help out when I
could. I really look forward to getting
more involved in the organization
when I retire, but at this time in my life
I have a demanding job with long
working hours. I still play music and
plan on being part of Ascension Outdoors, the t.v. show I co-hosted with
my brother-in-law, in the near future.
Add to that monthly articles, my age
and the fact that I've had a couple of
health issues recently and you'll find a
tired individual with not much time.
With all that being said, I'm on the
board and will try my best to help the
organization be successful.
I have served on the board of directors for the EASL for more years than I
can remember. I was president for two
years and chaired the kids fishing
rodeo, adult fishing rodeos, acorns for
wildlife projects, National Hunting and
Fishing Day events, several youth
events and numerous other projects
through the years. During the same
span of years I served as a D.U. Banquet chairman and was on the banquet
committee for sixteen years. During
this time I also worked on the Blind
River Boss Gobbler chapter committee.
I am by no means bragging about
my involvement in these different conservation organizations. I feel I should
have done even more. I feel that the
men and women that I was involved
with during this time were successful in
their mission with the exception of one
thing. We evidentially did not teach our
offspring to fill our void when we became burnt out or too old to continue
to serve. Our youngsters came up during a span of time that presented much
more opportunities in the outdoors
than we had a mere forty or fifty years
ago. Wild turkeys are now common on
much of our landscapes. Whitetail deer
are just about everywhere. It's not uncommon at all for youths to be able to
shoot trophy bucks. For years now
there's been youth only hunting seasons. Redfish and specs are more available than ever. All of these things are
fantastic and were part of our mission,
but they only came about because different groups of people worked their
butts off to accomplish these things. I
truly feel that my generations' youngsters believe that the fish and game
populations were always as they are
today and they don't have to do anything for the scenario to continue for
their children.
At a past board meeting I began to
take notice of the age of the people in
attendance. About half were retired.
Only one person in the group would I
consider young. That person is a fine

young man and is much appreciated by

the group. To acquire about ten more
like him would be precious. In recent
past years there have been a few young
men that have made an attempt to become leaders of our organization. My
nephew was president of the EASL for
three years and he did a very good job.
Because of his youthfulness he was able
to bring in a couple of his younger
friends aboard. At one time our Blind
River Boss Gobblers chapter had a top
standing in the National Wild Turkey
Federation. Now we don't even have a
chapter. That's a shame. An attempt to
revive the group was made by a young
man several years ago. He made an excellent attempt and was successful to
some degree for a banquet or two. But
that has gone by the wayside, probably
because of the lack of help.
It's hard to believe that Ascension
Parish could be without a D.U. Chapter on the east bank, but it did happen
for several years, after what had been
one of the finest D.U. Chapters in the
state. The Gonzales D.U. Chapter has
now been reunited and is presently
going into its third year. This years'
banquet will be held Thursday September 8th at Lamar Dixon. It's interesting
to see that this committee is composed
of some of our younger conservationists. The banquet committee is cochaired by Paul Matherne and Alden
Gautreau. Alden is 42 yrs young and
has served on the committee for three
years now. He also happens to be one
of the youngsters that would often
make trips to our hunting lease in
Venice, LA. years ago. His wife Charlene is serving as secretary for the
group. I've also been told that this
committee has several officers that are
between thirty and forty years of age.
This group has put together some fine
banquets and it's good to see them
heading in the right direction.
Gotta go now. Headed for a Donaldsonville D.U. committee meeting. This
group has learned very well about the
value of using their youth for their annual event. It's one reason they've been
so successful in the past....

Getting Your Kicks in Year 66

Climb into the Wayback

Machine, my talented young
friends, and Ill take you back to
another time-a time of turmoil,
tension and 8-track tapes; a
time of civil rights, civil
disobedience and good
vibrations; a time of peace, love,
rock-and-roll and 32 cents a
gallon gasoline.
Im talking, of course, about
1966-a time 50 years ago when
nothing, including sports, music
and politics, could escape
controversy. The choice of that
particular year in an explosive
decade will be made clear to
you momentarily, but first, let
me try to recall the feel of the
period for you since I lived to
tell about it.
Without a doubt the most
dividing issue of the era was the

Vietnam War with 500,000

American troops overseas and
the protests growing daily
across the country. The
dissenting mood seemed to
spark controversy in other areas
including the world of sports
where heavyweight champion
Muhammad Ali had already
divided Americans with his
Muslim views.
Then on March 19, 1966, an
all-black starting five of Texas
Western (now UTEP) stunned
the bluebloods of basketball,
the Kentucky Wildcats, to win
the NCAA and change the face
of college athletics forever.
Another traditional power,
Notre Dame, caused a storm in
NCAA football when the Irish
ran out the clock instead of
going for the win in the Game

of the Century in a 10-10 tie

with Michigan State (No
overtimes back then.) and was
still voted number one over
Bear Bryants undefeated
Alabama squad. That sent
redneck Tide fans into the
streets to protest much like the
hippies they despised.
Even the Indianapolis 500
where the fastest car across the
finish line usually wins had a
dispute. Taking a cue from the
topsy, turvy times, 11 cars went
out in a first lap crash and
confusion reigned after that.
Rookie Graham Hill was
declared the winner at the
checkered flag as only seven cars
completed the race. Runner-up
Jim Clark immediately filed a
protest saying that Hill was a

lap behind him and never

passed a car all day.
The race was not declared
official until the following
Monday morning when
Hill-who was surprised himself
at the outcome- was proclaimed
the official winner.
And deep in the heart of
Texas, the Eighth Wonder of
the World, the Houston
Astrodome, opened with its
magical new surface-Astroturf.
Reviews were mixed and Phillies
slugger Dick (Dont call me
Richie.) Allen-no stranger to
controversy himself-made
headlines with his statement,
If a horse wont eat it, I dont
want to play on it.
Meanwhile, recording artists
were faced with the dilemma of
inserting protests into their
music and risk possible bans
from conservatively-owned
radio stations or sticking with
the status quo of Happy Days
songs that offended no one.
Many began to heed the advice
of folk legends Peter, Paul and
Mary who in their classic I Dig
Rock and Roll Music sang,
But if I really say it, the radio
wont play it, unless I lay
it-between the lines
Never being one to shy away
from a fight, Beatles leader

John Lennon announced in the

fall of 66 that Were more
popular than Jesus now
setting off a firestorm in the
U.S. with radio stations across
the land hosting Beatle
Boycotts and record burnings.
And not to be outdone, Bob
Dylan was booed off the stage
(again) and called Judas by
British fans who considered him
a traitor to acoustical folk
because he toured with a band
(as opposed to his earlier solo
shows) and played an electric
guitar. Dylan responded to the
jeers with profanity and instructed the band to Turn it
up louder!

Dylan wasnt the only one

changing things around in
1966. The former president of
the liberal Actors Guild Ronald
Reagan decided that right was
the right way to go and ran as
an ultra-conservative Republican
in the Californias gubernatorial
race. The former actor (and
Democrat) was elected in a
landslide and the rest, as they
say, is history.
But there were some lighterand brighter-moments in 1966.
On May 7, a Native Dancer colt
named Kauai (rhymes with
Hawaii) King came hula

dancing across the finish line to

win the Kentucky Derby. The
significance-television viewers
could see the vivid blue and
white colored silks of the Ford
Stables since this was the first
race ever shown in color.

didnt protest a thing. Unless
you count the part of his
acceptance speech when he said
his horse should have gotten an
award also. And as Perry
Mason won his last case, The
Monkees debuted in prime
time after four young actors

were chosen for the roles from

450 tryouts including a guitar
player named Charles Manson.
Okay, sez you-that could have
been any year in the tumultuous
decade so whats so special
about 66? Except for
Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers
and GTOs, what else made this
12 month stretch any different?
Well, here it is boys and
girls-once upon a time there
were three high schools on the
east bank of Ascension
Parish-Dutchtown, Gonzales
and St. Amant-and the school
board decided to combine them
into one new school called
East Ascension. EA would open
in the fall of 1966 making the
May graduates of the respective
schools the last class to graduate
from each institution.
So with apologies to my
Bulldog and Wildcat cohorts,
I feel obliged to mention my
class-the last flight of the
Dutchtown Eagles-and maybe if
you bigger schools hadnt
beaten us so bad in football, you
would have gotten more ink.

In reality, our 1966 football

team wasnt protesting
anything-except maybe
winning-but we did manage to
be Doyle in our homecoming
game. And in the final game, I
scored the last point-a kicked
point after-following Randall
LeBlancs touchdown. That
record stood for 35 years-hell,
they shut the school down-until
the new Dutchtown
High opened.
The boys basketball team led
by Keith Dixon, Chuck Mayon
and Barry Boudreaux fared
much better chalking up a rare
win over Gonzales-the first by
an Eagle team in any sport in
many years.
The girls team featured

seniors Sheily Duplessis,

Darlene Hebert and Kathy
Babin and also made it to the
state playoffs.
I think we were aware that the
world was changing outside of
our little rural community but
we were too busy concerning
ourselves with being a part
of the final Dutchtown
ceremonies-the last homecoming, the last prom, and-of
course-the last graduation-to
protest anything.
Unless you count Dixons
(who turned out to be a true
child of the 60s) unsuccessful
rebellion to replace the class
song-the inspirational I
Believe-with the rocking We
Gotta Get Out of This Place
by the Animals.
The one thing I would protest
today is that an unusually high
number of our classmates-15 to
be exact-have gotten their
tickets to see the Angels play
and wont be with us on June
11 for our 50th reunion at
Jimmy Babins compound on
Diversion Canal.
And as further proof of my
then civil obedience, I have
included my draft card-unburned- along with the faded
photographs, tickets torn in half
and other mementos shown in
the accompanying pictures.
As for the Toupee patch,
why that was the name of the

school newspaper sponsored by

my still-Facebook friend Ms.
Carolyn Ourso. The title reflected our not-so-New York
Times motto-We cover
the news!
Pretty bad, huh. Well, we
found it mildly amusing 50
years ago-when we got our
kicks in 1966.

with "Crazy Train" by Ozzy. So if you like
hearing a WIDE variety of music, this is the

Now that
I have been
Profiled.
I live on a peaceful, dead end
road that is a mixture of standard
brick homes, trailers, campers and
double wides. Some yards are
perfect, some yards have 8 foot
fences surrounding them and look
like fortified compounds. Some are
wide open and up off the ground
like mine is since I live in a flood
zone.
Over the past couple of years a
local developer purchased some
land up and down our sweet road
and started putting ratty looking
trailers and building and renting
to anyone who could pay.
Now our quiet road is infested
with strangers walking the street at
all hours of the day and night.
Their cars and trucks seem to
ignore the fact that this is a
peaceful neighborhood with speed
limits and respect for our

neighbors.
This year it has been particularly
bad. Weve had a shooting within
the last couple of months. There
have been burglaries and break-ins.
Ive heard through the grapevine
that we need to try to slow traffic
down and watch for suspicious
happenings. After communicating
with the Sheriffs Department our
final solution seems to be our
best venue for a more secure

Ingredients:
8 Fresh Roma Tomatoes
2 tsp Kosher Salt
1 Tbsp Cracked Black Pepper (fresh if available)
cup olive oil
2 boxes Boursin garlic & herb cheese
3 oz fresh bleu cheese crumbles
Method:
Pre-heat your oven to 450 degrees.
Ve r y c a r e f u l l y s h a v e t h e b o t t o m o f t h e t o m a t o
to create a flat surface. Cut the top of the
tomato and using a melon baller, car efully
hollow out the inside of the tomato. Coat the
tomatoes in olive oil and sprinkle them with
s a l t a n d p e p p e r. I n a s e p a r a t e c o n t a i n e r
combine the Boursin and bleu cheese then
stuff the tomatoes. In an oven safe dish, bake
the tomatoes for apox 10 minutes, or until
the cheese starts to bubble. Promptly remove
the tomatoes from the oven and allow to cool
before enjoying them.
