Chapter 9 Communicating in Organizations
When this chapter discussed Gender Differences in Communication, I was able to relate with it in my
workplace. At my previous job, our project manager was femalesince construction is highly male
dominantI took notice that she had to communicate in a manner that was similar to the male approach.
Instead of giving advice indirectly, she was and had to be more direct because of the position she was in.
This can also be a result of her working so long in an industry predominately male. However, she had a
more flexible conversation style as opposed to my direct superior at the time who liked to dominate the
conversation. For example, whenever we did a site inspection, my supervisor (male) would take
command of the group conversation, while our project manager (female) would be more flexible and
creative when conversing.
