I obtained an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at ESPOL (Escuela Superior

Politcnica del Litoral), one of the three top universities of Ecuador.

During the last three years, as a part of my undergraduate training I have been able to
collaborate in some research activities carried out at CIDNA and SIMULAB (the latter, a
laboratory for simulation of materials). As a result of this collaboration there are three
publications in which I have participated. In addition, there is another publication in
collaboration with a research group at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.
Currently, as a research assistant at CIDNA, I am involved in a project directed toward the
study of novel catalyst for oil hydrodesulfurization. Catalyst design and production are
very important for the Ecuadorian oil industry. I would like to get involved in graduate
school in research focused on transition metals compounds, porous materials with possible
applications in catalytic processes. I am aware that the possibilities for applications of such
catalysts go far beyond those of the oil industry. In fact, I am also interested in problems
having to do with CO2 capture which has a more ecologically geared impact.
The study program of Material Science and Engineering at PENNSTATE caught my
attention because in addition to having a very prestigious faculty it emphasizes
multidisciplinary training, provides facilities for working with nanotechnology and is
associated with other centers in American universities such as the Materials Research
Facilities Network.
If possible, I would like to carry out research under the guidance of Professor Ismaila Dabo,
in view of his extended knowledge about development of materials for energy conversion
and storage. Another worthy choice could be Professor Susan Sinnott, bearing in mind his
expertise in theoretical-experimental design and characterization of materials.
I am interested in becoming a researcher. I am quite certain that I will be able to return to
Ecuador (after a having a year or two of postdoctoral training) and participate in research
there. There are many changes which are taking place now and which will continue in the
years to come. I would like to be well trained in material science and engineering in a
prestigious institution such as PENNSTATE in order to be able to participate in the
transformations in Ecuador.
Thank you very
much Yours truly,
Jose Alejandro Martiz Chalen
