Topic: Jaspers Beanstalk - Days

of the Week

Grade Level: Kindergarten


Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.2:
With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of
a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3:
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event
or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which
they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.
Objectives:

Students will recite the days of the week

Students will place days of the week in order

Students will compare what Jasper does during the week with what the students do
during the week.

Materials:

Jaspers Beanstalk Book

Days of the Week Booklet

Days of the Week Index cards

Calendar

Days of the week Song

Procedure:
1. Anticipatory Set: The teacher will show students the calendar. Tell students that they will be
learning about the days of the week. Ask students if they know some of the names of the
days of the week. Encourage their answers.

2. Teacher will ask students to point at days such as Christmas and to point out their birthdays.
Ask what day their birthdays are on this year and point to the days row at the top of each
month. Start to teach the English words for the days as you discuss their birthdays. Ask what
day it is today.

3. Have students listen to The Days of the Week Song


4. After listening to the song, teacher will place students in groups of 3 or 4 in order to
play Put the Days in Order.
5. Teacher will explain that students will now have to place the set cards in the order
that the days of the week belong.
6. Remind students that as they are placing the cards in order to remember the song
and to say that day out loud.
7. Teacher will play another round to increase speed.
8. Teacher will gather students back in a circle and explain to students that they are
going to read about a cat named Jasper who does different things on the days of the
week.
1. Ask students to predict what they think Jasper will do on the days of the week.
2. Teacher will point to the different activities each character is doing and ask
questions to see if any of the student do the activities on the same day.
9. At the end on the book, teacher will have students remember some of the things
Jasper did on a certain day.
1. Have a discussion with students about some of the things the students do during
the week.
10. Have students return to their desk.
11. Teacher will present students with a Days of the Week Booklet.
12. Teacher will explain to students that they will create their own story about what they
do during the week. Students will write one or two sentences about what they do on
that day of the week and draw/color a picture that resembles the activity.

13. Remind students about some of the activities that Jasper did and have students
look at the index cards on the board to remind them of the spelling of the days of the
week.
14. When students are finished, have each student return to the carpet with their paper.
15. Go around the circle and have each student explain what they do during the week.
Use rubric as a guide to direct each student.
16. Closure: Review what happened in Jaspers Beanstalk. Have students recite days of
the week in order.
Assessment:
Formative: Observe the students as teacher is reading the book to make sure they are
paying attention. Teacher will ask questions during the book to ensure students are
learning. Also, teacher will walk around the classroom to make sure they are using the
days of the week in their Days of the Week Assignment.
Summative: Students must meet the criteria on their drawing and presentation found ion
Jaspers Beanstalk Presentation Rubric in order to receive full credit. Student will
receive a 12/16 score. If a student score below this level, teacher will provide on-on-one
assistance.
Accommodations:
These accommodations will be made for special needs students. If a student struggles
with speaking in front of the class, teacher can increase the amount of personal
assistance for the specific learner (such as assigning partners).
