Noonan, Rita K., and Dyanna Charles. "Developing Teen Dating Violence Prevention
Strategies." Developing Teen Dating Violence Prevention Strategies. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, Sept. 2009. Web. 04 Apr. 2016
This source contains information and statistics of teens that report abuse in their
relationships, whether it's emotional, physical, or sexual. It focuses more on middle
school youth and the resources that are used to educate the, before they get into
relationships. Statistics of one of every four teens go through some kind of abusive
relationship without reporting it.
Looking on Sacramento States database proved to be successful, as it provided more and
more journals on this topic. Using a scholarly journal allows the reader and the researcher
to feel confident in the material they are reading on. The source has been reviewed and
written on a topic that has legitimately been looked into. The authors for this journal have
job title that are linked to the CDC, and show knowledge of the subject in the depth of the
details they provide. Details including statistics of how many reports are made, the
long/short term affects and the links to further abusive in drug or alcoholic substances.
This journal was valuable because of the emotional value that it held. It allows the reader
to make some connection as they travel back into their past on what the years in middle
school and high school were like. Journals like this, allow the reader to think about their
own personal experiences and make connections. Using this is exactly what is needed
when trying to make a pathos connection.
Potiker, Haley. "Inside the Fight to End California's Unfair Restrictions on Reporting Rape."
Broadly RSS. VICE, 22 Dec. 2015. Web. 29 Mar. 2016.
Senator Leyva was elected in 2014 and since then she has been trying to make mountains
move where they need to be placed. One of these mountains is trying to end the statute
limitations on rape. One of the bigger cases that is mentioned is the Bill Cosby one,
where women could no longer cry rape because too many years had passed since the
event. Her want to push a new law to help rape victims coincides with her goal to protect
and defend all victims in abusive relationships.
This article sheds light on how the movement Leyva is trying to create in Californias
atmosphere of relationships, not only in the school system, but in the state as a whole.
The article provides a great thought provoking questions that allow the reader to develop
a more critical thought process of how her actions could affect the state.
Finding this evidence proved to be a little more difficult than originally planned, but itll
contribute greatly on giving a big picture idea. It will allow the readers to connect from
their past of what happened in high school to what happens in the world they live in now;
a place where people are abused and sometimes will not receive justice.

Found through the Sacramento State Library online resources, a series called Real Life
Teens was identified and one of its many segments included one that was on teen
emotional abuse. This video is identifying certain aspects such as anxiety, peer pressure
and the emotional stress abuse gives to a teen. The clip shares several different stories on
the relationships where anger gets out of control and turns into a problem.
Abuse will always cause harm, and hiding it will do nothing for the victim and bully.
Teens face an especially hard challenge when it comes to reporting abuse because they
fear the words of their peers and the judgment they might face, even though something
wrong is happening to them. There is a step by step definition of what abusive
relationship can be and is.
These videos play on the emotions of the reader and will allow connections from the
visual side of things to the facts. This was one of the many things found when using the
schools database for more trustworthy information. The reality of the stories speaks
volumes as the viewer is able to relate to past relationships and remember what could or
could not have been emotionally abused.
"Senator Leyva Launches "Healthy Relationships and Safe Schools Act". California State Senate
Majority Caucus, 27 Feb. 2015. 31 March. 2016.
Taking a small snippet off of Senator Leyvas website, there was light shed on the bill she
is trying to make a law, SB-592. This page proved to be beneficial just as another source
was; it holds statistics from the CDC such as how many teens actually report abuse when
it happens. Senator Leyva expresses her view of teen abuse in relationships and the need
for this bill to be passed.
She sees this bill as a benefit to schools and giving educators and teachers the chance to
become educated on how to help teens. Setting protocols would be put in place for all
schools, so that teens would always have a safe place to report abuse.
Finding this was thankfully easy, being able to type in the bill and Senator Leyvas name;
her website came up within the first ten searches. This allowed more background on the
bill that was originally viewed to be built upon and the personal view of the senator and
why she wanted to pass this. Her views are similar to the views of the paper, in that she
wants to create safer places for teens in the education system. Protecting teens from
abusive relationships is just the start to creating safer places.
Sousa, C. A. (1999), TEEN DATING VIOLENCE. Family Court Review, 37: 356374.
Carole Sousa writes an article regarding the rise of abusive relationships back in the
1990s. The ages of the teens she brings up are mere sixteen and seventeen year olds, and
the relationships end in extreme ways; death. She brings awareness to this problem
because she sees it as an epidemic in America, and something needs to be done.
The extremeness of this article, just within the first few paragraphs is exactly why it
would be a great source for this paper. It catches the eye of the reader and hooks them in

as they realize the severity of this issue. Teen abuse is something that can escalate quickly
and it needs help to stay away from the extremes.
Using this either in the beginning for the paper or somewhere in the body will keep the
attention of the reader. It will be important to note that this article is from the 90s and
using the comparison of then versus know will be a key point to discuss.
"Teen Dating Violence." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 01 Feb. 2016. 31 Mar. 2016.
This website is an informational one that provides basic info of what an abusive
relationship consists of. Statistics are given of the number of students that are in abusive
relationships where 23% females and 14% males never report abuse. It gives a brief
synopsis of why it happens and what effects can occur when someone is abused.
Getting the basic foundation of abusive relationships is vital in this paper because it lays
down the foundation of the topic. Giving the reader the ability to understand what counts
as an abusive relationship without using big words that are hard to decipher. There are
any articles linked to the CDCs page in case others are curious in what they should and
how to get help.
Finding the roots of what the state considers an abusive relationship was direct and
straight to the point. Using Google as a search engine, it provided multiple sites that were
trustworthy and would give accurate information. These statistics and facts give the
research credibility and realness to the problem.
US Congress. Senate. Healthy Relationships and Safe Schools Act. SB. 592. Regular Sess.,
February 1, 2016.
This text contains a bill that Senator Leyva of California is trying to pass to make into a
law. It contains information on why the bill is made and what purpose it would serve to
the state. SB-592 was created to put procedures in California school systems to help
teenagers get a better access to report relationship abuse. The goal is have counselors on
site of schools where teens can report abuse, or get help after they have been through
abuse and need help recovering.
Though somewhat bland to read at first, since it is a bill, the content holds valuable
information. Without the bill, there cannot be a chance to make a law, to help teens in
abusive relationships. The goal is to get a peaked interest of an audience to realize what
may be happening in their schools.
This bill is very important to my research, because it is the foundation of everything I
look for. I found this bill first and became intrigued with the situation teens may be
experiencing, and knew that if I could understand the bill, it would lead to more
productive evidence for research.
