April 20th, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Our 6th grade class will be taking a field trip to the Birmingham
Holocaust Education Center on May 9th, 2016 from 8:30am1:00pm. We will arrive at our location via School Bus. The purpose
of our field trip is to learn more about the Holocaust. The
Birmingham Holocaust Education Center has an exhibit called
Darkness Into Life that tells the stories of Alabama Holocaust
survivors through text, paintings, and photographs. There will be a
speaker who will briefly discuss the Holocaust and give a tour of the
Holocaust Library on site, and then the students will have time to
discover the exhibit.
Since admission is free to the Birmingham Holocaust Education
Center, the only cost for our trip will be transportation. The total
cost for transportation is $115. This means each student will
need to bring $6 cash in order to come on the field trip. This
money will need to be turned in to me by May 4th. If for some
reason you cannot provide your student with the amount of money
needed, then I will be happy to work with you on this matter. We
want every child to be able to come on this trip!
Students will need to bring their own sack lunch the day of the
trip. They do not need to bring any electronic devices, extra
spending money, or weapons of any kind on this trip. They will need
to wear any Trace Crossings shirt the day of the trip.
If you are interested in coming on this fun field trip with us, then
please send me an e-mail at ann.robertson23@hotmail.com. I would
love for 2 parents to come with us to help out and spend some time
with the students! I will take the first two parents that e-mail me.
Please sign the following permission slip and have your
student return it to me with the $6 for transportation
attached by May 4th.

We are so excited to dig a little deeper into learning!

Thanks!
Ann Robertson

Safety/Emergency/First Aid/Medicine Plan:

The teacher will carry around a small first-aid kid that she
will put together with the nurse at Trace Crossings prior to
the field trip. The kit will involve small things such as BandAids, anti-bacterial wipes, cotton swabs, gauze, medical
tape, mini scissors, sunscreen, and bug spray. Also, in the kit
she will have any medicine that is required for the 5-hour
time span for any student. The teacher should already be
aware of which students in her class require medicine. She
will send a separate medicine form home with those
particular students. The students will give this form to their
parent/guardian. The parent/guardian will need to sign this
form, granting permission for the teacher, Ms. Ann
Robertson, to administer the medicine to their child. The
nurse should have access to the daily medicine, so the
teacher will work with the nurse to correctly bag and label
medicine. The medicine will need to be in a Ziploc with the
childs name clearly written on it. Stapled to the bag will
need to be the medical form filled out by the parent, which
includes name of the student, name of the medication, dose
to be given, time to be given, any special directions, and
emergency directions for situations that might occur. The
teacher will work with the nurse to get a briefing on all
medicines, what to do, how to administer, etc. On the actual
field trip, administration of medicine will be done so in a
private matter, at the right time, with the right dose, and
only by the teacher. The teacher will check the student,

dosage, label, medicine, etc twice to make sure she is

administering everything correctly.
The permission form and medical form will need to be turned
in by May 4th, along with the parent permission slip for the
actual field trip, and the $6 for transportation.

I, ________________________________, give permission to Ms.

Ann Robertson, the teacher of my student, to administer my

Holocaust Education Center on May 9 th, 2016. I understand
that she will give the correct dosage, at the correct time, to
the correct student. My child is ____________________________.

Special Instructions:

In the case of a major medical emergency, teacher or

chaperone will call 911. Teacher and chaperones will keep
the student/students in danger calm as well as the students
not in danger. Teacher will delegate a chaperone to take
other students away from the scene to distract and keep
calm. The teacher will stay with the student who is in need
and wait for the police or ambulance.
The students will be briefed as soon as they arrive at the
Center for what to do if they get lost. Students are to meet
back at the main desk of the Center (where they first walk
in) if they get separated or lost from the group. They will be
told that they could also find a worker of the Birmingham
Holocaust Education Center to get them back with the group.
Management Plan:
The teacher will explain to the students that on the day of
the field trip, the students are to wear a Trace Crossings Tshirt. She will explain that students can wear any bottoms
with their t-shirt. This can be jeans, pants, skirt, etc. The
teacher will explain to the students that they can wear any
shoes they want the day of the field trip, but she
recommends comfortable shoes that are easy to walk in. The

teacher will remind the students that they will need to eat a
good breakfast before they come to school that day, as lunch
might be later than they are used to eating.
There will be 2 chaperones and the teacher. This is 3 adults
to all 18 students. This means 1 adult to every 6 students,
which is a manageable ratio.
Before the buses arrive, the teacher will explain that they
are to be well behaved not only on the bus, but at the Center
as well. The teacher will explain to her students that she
expects their best, and she knows that they will not act up.
She will explain that the noise level on the bus does not
need to get too loud.
Lunch: The students are to bring their own sack lunch the
day of the field trip. They will need to have their names
written on the lunches, so they do not get mixed up. The
teacher will have crates to carry the lunches in. She will
bring them on the bus and then into the Education Center.
She will get students to help her carry the crates. The
students will be eating lunch inside the Center at the
designated lunch area. The students will have around 30
minutes to eat lunch.

Assessment of Learning:

Graphic Organizer
Debrief in the classroom after the trip
Oral Presentation
Objective: Students will orally present about an Alabama Holocaust
survivor from the exhibit with at least 88% accuracy.

Students will have a note-taking graphic organizer to carry

around with them during the exhibit exploration portion of
the field trip. The teacher will pass out the graphic organizer
after lunch. The students will be finding an Alabama
Holocaust Survivor, and filling out the graphic organizer
about that particular person. The teacher will explain to the
students that they will be giving an oral presentation
following the field trip, so they need to make sure to take
thorough notes and fill out the graphic organizer well. After
the field trip, when the students have returned to the
classroom at around 1:00 pm, the class will debrief. The
teacher will ask questions and a conversation will take place
reflecting on the day. Two days after the field trip, the
students will give a brief oral presentation based on the
Alabama Holocaust Survivor that they have chosen from the
exhibit. They will use their notes from their graphic organizer
to create their oral presentation. Each student will give his
presentation in class. They will need to receive at least a
23/26, which is 88%, in order to be proficient on this learning
goal.

Oral Presentation
Now that you have been to the Birmingham Holocaust
Education Center, it is time for your oral presentation on
your chosen survivor. Use your graphic organizer to create
your oral presentation. You presentation will need to be 3-5
minutes long. In the presentation, you will need to explain
who the survivor is, their background before the Holocaust,
their story during the Holocaust, when/how they were
liberated, and any other interesting facts or knowledge

about this survivor. Basically, you are just giving us an

overview of this survivor so that we can learn a little more
about the survivors living in our own state. You need to be
thorough in your presentation, but please do not go over 5
minutes. You may have one note-card with you during your
presentation to help prompt you or help you remember
certain dates or hard facts. You may not write your entire
presentation and read straight from the card. Use the
checklist provided to help guide you to know how I will be
grading. Remember to make eye contact with the audience!
Good Luck!
