INFINITIVE COMPLEMENTS

Many verbs take to clauses beginning


with infinitives as complement, that
follow the pattern:

Verb+ object +
infinitive

Infinitive complemets fall into some


common verb groups including:
Persuade verbs (advise, cause,
convince, order, authorize, persuade),
the object is required.
Example:
1)

Verb+object+infinite
She advised me to take the job.
Alice persuade Jhon to come to the party.

Want verbs (expect, need, hope,


prefer, love, desire).
In this case the object is optional.
Example:
Verb+(object)+infinite
2)

She expects me to apply.


I need to find a job.
Joan wanted to write a letter to the
major.
Joan wanted Bill to write a lletter to the
major.

Believe verbs (consider, recognize), in


this case wear going to use infinitive
of be.
Example:
Verb+object+infinite of be.

We consider him to be the best singer.


They considered Bree to be a normal
teenager girl.

Plan verbs(arrange, plan). Follows the


pattern:

Verb+for +object+infinite of be.


They arranged for me to have an
interview.
They planned for Brees story to
continue.
He arranged for actress to play.

5)

Verbs are have, let, and make, follows


the same basic pattern, but requires
the same form of the verb rather than
the full infinitive.

Verb +object+base form.


His music makes me feel happy.
The producers had Jessica tell the truth.
Mr. Flinders let everyone believe.
