WhatisCommonCore?WhilemosteducationalprofessionalscananswerthisquestionI
feelthatIamatadisadvantage.IhaveasinglesubjectteachingcredentialinPhysical
EducationandatthistimePhysEdhasnotbeenincorporatedintotheCommonCore.My
educationalbackgroundisinadifferentareaofteaching.Whilethereisoverlapinstudent
learninggoals,theargumentisdifferent.WhileresearchingCommonCoreandparticipatingin
theclassroomdebateIstandresoluteinfavoroftheadoptionofCommonCore.
OneaspectsofCommonCorethatstandoutstomeisthepreparationforacompetitive
globalworkplace.Theworldisonlygettingsmaller.Ashrinkingworldincombinationwith
incredibleadvancementsintechnologymeanswecannolongerignoreorcreateseparation
fromothercountrieseconomies.Wemustprepareourstudentstonotonlycompetebutfunction
inthisglobalmarket.Anargumentbroughtupduringtheclassroomdebatebythoseagainst
CommonCorewasasitscore,whatwehaveworkswhychangeit?Iagreewiththis
statement.Theprobleminherenttothisargumentcomeswhenthe
desired
outcomenolonger
meetsthe
needed
outcome.Theworldisnolongerlinear.Peopleneedtobeabletothinkand
problemsolvecircularly.FrommylimitedexperienceteachingandworkingwithCommonCoreI
haveobservedstudentshavingtothinkin3dimensionsandworkcooperativelywithothers.
Duringthistimeihavewitnessedincrediblelearningishappening.
AnargumentproposedbythoseopposedtoCommonCoreisthatthestandardsfocus
oncollegeandcareerreadinessanddoesnotaddressthosewhomaychooseanalternate

path.WhileitistruethatCommonCoreaddressesthoseonthecollegiatepath,thefactstill
remainsthatthosewhochooseatechnicalortradejobwillstillneedtooperatewithintheever
growingglobaleconomy.Iwouldconsideritadisservicetoourstudentsifoureducational
systemoperatedinamannerinwhichlowerexpectationswereheldforthosewhoelectedto
notfollowthecollegiateroute.
CommonCorerequiresthatstateadopt85%ofthestandards.Thishasbeenarguedby
thoseopposedtoCommonCoretoberestrictiveandlimitingwhentakingintoaccountour
diversepopulation.Whilethisargumentholdssomevaliditythereis15%ofthestandardsthat
thestategetstodecidewhattoteach.AlsoWeareonecountrymadeupby51states.Wearea
diversecountrywitharichhistory.Ourhistoryisimportanttoouridentityanddiversityiskeyto
effectivelearning.AgainIbelieveitcomesbacktothedesiredoutcomeforourcountries
students.Ourjobineducationistoprepareourstudentsforsuccessintheirrespectivefutures.
Thedemandsoftheworkplacearefinite.Thesedemandsdontcareyourhaircolor,heritageor
statehistory.Whilethismayseemcoldanduncaring,it'sthetruth.Theworkplaceonlycaresif
youhavethenecessaryknowledge,skillbaseandrequiredabilities.
MyknowledgeofCommonCoreisincreasing.EachdayineducationIlearnmoreabout
theimpactoftheadoptionofCommonCore.Whiletherearesomelimitationsofthesenew
standardsthebenefitsovercomeanyreservationsIhaveasaneducator.Changeisdifficult,
especiallywhenchangerequiresmorefromyouandastudent,educatorandparent.Ibelieve
theCommonCoreisleadingusintherightdirectiontobecomeaforcetoberecognizedinthe
globalmarket.
