AskingthestudentsiftheyhaveeverplayedthegameofAroundTheWorld.Childrenlove
gamesandonaweekwheretheyhavebeentakingstandardizedtests,theywereexcitedfor
theopportunitytohavesomefun,whilestillhavinganeducationalexperience.

Studentsshouldbeabletofollowdirections,aswellasuse
theirpriorknowledgewithmultiplyingfractions,includingusingtheirbasicmultiplicationfacts
andsimplificationknowledgetohelpthem.

Mr.Peningerwillgiveapairofdicetoeachstudentcurrentlycompeting,wheretheywillone
byonethrowtodeterminethenumeratoranddenominatorofeachfraction.
Studentscompetingwillracetofinishtheproblemcorrectly,andinatimelymanner,whilethe
remainderoftheclassdoestheproblemontheirwhiteboard.

Thestudentwhofinishesfirstwillrevealtheiranswerandexplainand/ordemonstratetotheir
classmateswhatstepstheywentthroughtoreachtheiranswer.
Ifcorrect,saidstudentisthewinnerofthatroundandwilladvancetothenextone,
competingagainstthepersonsittingnextinline.Ifnot,theotherstudentwillhaveachance
toexplaintheiranswer.Allincorrectanswerswillbecorrectedandthecorrectwayto
completetheproblemwillbeexplained/demonstrated.
Thegamewillcontinueuntilonestudentmanagestodefeateveryotherstudent,(orforas
longastimeallows.)

Asaresult,studentshavepracticedtheirmultiplicationoffractions,aswellasbasicmultiplication
factsandsimplification,whichwillbenefitthemintheremainderoftheirMSTEPaswellasfortherest
oftheyear.

Attheendofthegame,studentswillprovidefeedback,andMrs.Engelswillsegwayintothe
mainlessonfortheday.

H.BackupPlan:
Thelackofsuppliesandinternetconnectionneededtocompletethislessonwillmakeiteasyto
completeamonganystandards.However,ifdicewerenotavailable,theinternetcouldbeused
tofindvirtualdice.Ifstudentswerenotrespondingwelltothegame,orbeingunabletofocus
duetotheteacheronlyfocusingonacoupleofstudentsatatime,thegamecouldbe
scratched,andthelessoncouldbetaughtusingadocumentcameraandthePromethean
Boardatthefrontoftheroom,wherestudentswouldusetheirwhiteboardstodemonstratetheir
understanding.
