Activity: Discussion based lecture with PowerPoint and multimedia resources.


Grade(s): 4th or 5th grade classes

Learning Objective(s):
1. Comprehension of the concepts: prejudice, discrimination, and bullying.
2. Be cognizant of discrimination, prejudice, or bullying when it is seen.
3. Have an understanding of what it means to be an Upstander.
Materials: PowerPoint, Projector, Assessment Sheets, Cookies, and YouTube Videos
Procedure: Introduce self and have students introduce themselves. Have students
complete brief pre-assessment. Show YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=XMolzESn4oI) The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss and read by John Strain. Ask students
about themes in story. Discuss and define prejudice, discrimination, and bullying. Use
discussion questions to talk about the story as a group. Show YouTube video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeqQCyQOCPg) "Be an Upstander" - video by The
NED Show. Ask students to complete brief post-assessment and pass out cookies.
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: Number of students present during the lesson and number of
assessments collected.
Perception Data: Students will be able to share the information they learn with others.
Students will work towards a positive self-worth. Students will analyze their values and
beliefs during and after the lesson. Students will learn to accept and appreciate and
respect individual and cultural differences.

Outcome Data: Number of students who answer yes to question one on postassessment and no to question two. Complete an analysis number of students who
change answer to question three.
Follow Up: Ask students if they have questions and if they would like to go over anything
further.
