Sammy young soul prompted him to take a decision suddenly. And he wanted to
hold his message because it was abysmal. Although he may then not correspond
to
what
he
meant.
Sammy action is actually based on a desire to improve their living standards, to
determine
their
own
lives.
The mandate that I got from reading the A & P, short stories by John Updike,
along
with
some
of
the
reviews
about
it.
A & P is the name of the supermarket where Sammy works as a cashier. One
afternoon when Sammy was working, three girls bathing suit suddenly entered.
Sammy's attention was consumed. But then the manager Sammy appeared to
admonish the girl. Sammy did not like seeing the girls humiliated. He also
expressed a desire to stop working on the manager, hoping thus he will be
regarded as a hero who unexpectedly by the girls. But they were already gone. ...
Once you begin a gesture it's fatal not to go through with it, thought Sammy. He
was
completely
out
of
the
supermarket.
In addition to the mandate, another interesting thing that I found of this short
story is a detailed depiction of the situation experienced by Sammy, laced with
cynicism. how he likens a visitor who sucks with witches ( "... if she'd been born
at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem ..."), or the
presumption against coworkers ( "... he thinks he's going to be manager some
sunny day, maybe in 1990 when it's called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki
Tea Company or something ... ").

Jiwa muda Sammy mendorongnya untuk mengambil keputusan secara tiba-tiba.
Dan ia ingin memegang perkataannya itu karena sudah kepalang. Walau yang ia
dapat kemudian tidak sesuai dengan yang ia maksud.
Tindakan Sammy sebetulnya didasari hasrat untuk meningkatkan taraf hidupnya,
untuk menentukan sendiri hidupnya.
Amanat tersebut yang saya dapat dari membaca A & P, cerpen karya John
Updike, beserta beberapa review tentangnya.
A & P adalah nama supermarket di mana Sammy bekerja sebagai kasir. Suatu
siang ketika Sammy tengah bekerja, tiga orang gadis berpakaian renang tibatiba masuk. Perhatian Sammy pun tersita. Namun kemudian manager Sammy
muncul untuk menegur para gadis tersebut. Sammy tidak suka melihat para
gadis tersebut dipermalukan. Ia pun menyatakan keinginannya untuk berhenti
bekerja pada sang manager, berharap dengan demikian ia akan dianggap
sebagai pahlawan yang tak disangka-sangka oleh para gadis. Namun mereka
terlanjur berlalu. once you begin a gesture its fatal not to go through with it,
pikir Sammy. Ia pun benar-benar keluar dari supermarket tersebut.
Selain amanat, hal menarik lain yang saya temukan dari cerpen ini adalah
penggambaran yang mendetail akan situasi yang dialami Sammy, yang dibubuhi
dengan sinisme. bagaimana ia mengibaratkan seorang pengunjung yang
menyebalkan dengan penyihir (if shed been born at the right time they would
have burned her over in Salem), atau anggapannya terhadap rekan kerjanya
(he thinks hes going to be manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990 when
its called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea Company or something).
