Subject: Science, Water Pollution

Common Core State Standards:

Concept 1: Changes in Environments Describe the interactions between human populations,
natural hazards, and the environment.
PO 1. Explain the impacts of natural hazards on habitats (e.g., global warming, floods, asteroid
or large meteor impacts).
PO 2. Propose a solution, resource, or product that addresses a specific human, animal, or
habitat need.
PO 3. Evaluate the possible strengths and weakn
Objective (Explicit):
SWBAT explain how water gets polluted and find a habit they can change to improve this
problem.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
At the end of the lesson the student will post on the Padlet discussion board explaining what
they can do at home to prevent the ground water from getting polluted.
Key vocabulary: Water Pollution

Materials:
Soil
Plastic cup
Plastic Container
Powdered Milk
Water

Instructional Input

Review that over the past week we have been talking a lot about water pollution and have the
students raise their hands and explain what their own personal definition of water pollution is.
Then explain how were going to do an experiment to see how our water actually gets polluted.
Teacher Will:

Student Will:

- Hand out materials

- instruct students not to touch them yet
- explain what were going to do with the
materials
- ask students to write down in their
notebooks what they think will happen.

-Listen to instruction
- Write prediction in note books

Differentiation Strategy

Guided Practice

Teacher Will:

Student Will:

- Walk students step by step through each

process
- cut holes into the bottom of the plastic
cup, only 2 or 3
-Put the plastic cup with holes into the big
plastic container
- fill plastic cup with holes with soil
- pour one cup of water onto the soil and
watch to see what the water looks like
after it filters through the soil
- Mix a spoonful of powdered milk into the
soil
- pour one more cup of water into the soil
and see what happens to the water

- follow directions
- make observations for each process
- take note of what happens to the water
before and after the powdered milk
- before the powdered milk is mixed in make
an educated guess of whats going to happen
to the water after the powdered milk.

Differentiation Strategy
Go through each step again with a student who may have fell behind
Teacher Will:

Student Will:

- Ask students to reply to the question on

- Respond to the question on Padlet.
Padlet asking what happened to the water
after the powdered milk and how that
relates to water pollution.
Differentiation Strategy
Help students who may need help with their writing skills

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:

At the end the students will write on a piece of paper one habit they would change at home to
prevent water from getting polluted
