Instrument
Tradition of Excellence comprehensive band method- by Bruce Pearson
(Depending on instrument) reeds, cork grease, or valve oil.

Course Description:
This class is designed to teach students the first steps to learning how to play their
desired instruments and read music. During this class students will be introduced to
different ways of reading music on the staff.
Student Learner outcomes:
At the end of the fall course students should be able to

Play two major scales (C & F)


Identify notes, note values, and rest values
Identify and know how to read 4/4
Identify dynamic markings
Identify slurs and ties

Week 1

Going over the syllabus, emergencies, and classroom rules.


Ice breakers with the new band

Assembling instruments
Learning how to hold them
Playing on the mouth piece
Percussion will be watching videos about bass drum, snare, and xylophones

Assembling instruments sections at a time


Percussion will show and tell what they have learned about getting started
Students will learn three notes on instruments (percussion will work on
sticking left to right)

Week 2

Students will each learn three notes and as a class we will play them
together.
Students will go into sections and figure out how to play hot cross buns
Students will play what they have learned in front of the class

Students will play hot cross buns in sections and then with the class as a
whole
Students will play hot cross buns using different lengths of notes (1 beat per
note, 2 beats, and 4 beats)
In between phrases resting for 2 beats and 4 beats will be introduced

Play all five notes in the form of a scale (C major)
Play the new scale in different lengths of notes ( 1 beat, 2 beats, and 4 beats)

Introducing notation using the tradition of excellence book


Introduce the first three notes students learned in notation form
Introduce how to rest using 4 beats from notation (pg 4)

Discussion about the value of whole notes and whole rests


Count out the rhythms and write the rhythms in pg 4 number 1.
After counting students will play through page 4 (1-4)
In between exercises discuss where to breath

Morning assignment: draw out a whole note and draw out a whole rest
Go over page 4 and 5 exercises 1, 2, 3,4,5,6
Introduce different note exercises pg 4 #5 and write in the note names under
the note heads

Practice writing in treble clef and note heads on the staff (bottom of pg 6)
Introduce the symbol for breath marks ()

Morning assignment: drawing out a treble clef, whole note, half note, quarter
note, whole rest, half rest, and a quarter rest.
Discuss quarter notes and quarter rests. Show a chart about note values that
match rests
Count out rhythm 14 on pg 8 and then play #s 15 and 17
