Students will be
able to read a map
to identify and
label the path that
the Ingalls family
traveled.
Students will
compare the jobs
they have at home
to the jobs that the
Ingalls family had.
After Instruction
1) Informal Assessment During my covered wagon lesson, I will assess the
students as they draw the length and width of the wagon as well as labeling
the parts of the wagon. I will also assess if the children understand the
differences between a car and a covered wagon by questioning the students
and observing their conversations.
2) Traditional/Formal Assessment On a paper pencil test at the end of the
unit, these are some of the questions I would ask:
Why did the Ingalls family choose to move west?
What kind of jobs did the Ingalls family have? Are they the same as
your jobs at home?(Venn diagram)
What kind of items did Pa barter/trade for? ( Circle the items)
3) Authentic Assessment- I will assess the children when they make butter
and bake cookies. I will assess their math skills (measuring) as well as their
knowledge of home economics in their life and Laura Ingalls life.
4) Portfolio The students homemade maps- I would display these artifacts on the
wall outside of our classroom so parents and students would be able to
enjoy them.
Graffiti wall and K-W-L chart- I would hang these in my classroom so
the students could visually see how much they have learned
throughout the unit.
Student journals- I will use these journals during parent/teacher
conferences to show how much they have learned as well as their hand
writing skills.
Overall Evaluation of Lesson Unit I will determine the effectiveness of the unit by first assessing if the
students enjoyed it. If the students did not have fun during the unit, it
was not very effective. Learning should be enjoyable!
If the students enjoyed the unit, I will then determine how much the
students have learned by completing different methods of
assessment. If I find out through my pre-assessments that the
students already know the information, I will know that I need to
increase the difficulty if I teach the unit again.
I will determine if the students have learned the stated objectives by
assessing my students using the methods state above. If my students
fail at my assessments, I will realize that my unit plan was not
successful.
