Freedom Middle School Lesson Plan

We are... Lifelong Learners, Effective Communicators, Critical Thinkers

Teacher:
Subject:
Date:

SOL(s):
8.15 The student will
a) solve multistep linear equations in one variable on one and two sides
of the equation.
c) identify properties of operations used to solve an equation.

Blooms Taxonomy: (highlight all that apply)

Remembering, Understanding, Applying
Analyzing, Evaluating, Creating

Objective(s): The student will be able to

The student will know the steps to solving multistep equations.
The student will understand the properties used to solve multistep
equations.
The student will understand the steps to solving multistep equations.
The student will be able to solve multistep equations with distributive
property, combining like terms, and variables on both sides of the
equations.
The student will be able to justify the properties used to solve multistep
equations.

Materials needed:

Smartboard, Variables on both sides

Notes (100), equations homework (100),
homework key, Multi-step equations
scavenger hunt

Warm-Up/Opener/Review/Prior Knowledge:
Date- 24 card on the 24th, solving an equation with the solution 25.

Three warm up problems: Solving equations. Students work independently and then have three students
come to the board and write the answers. Go over the work and answers together.
4 x 8+ x=3
1.
2 ( p5 )=22
2.
3.

36=2 ( n+ 3 )5 n

Presentation/Activities/Guided/Independent Practice:

1. Date, 24 Game, and Warm up

2. Homework: split into two groups. Students that did their homework (watched the video) and other
group is made up of students that did not, did not feel comfortable with the content, or were absent.
3. Notes: Variables on Both Sides (Blended Learning)-small groups.

Independent Group: Students will a video and take notes on solving multistep equations
before coming to class. If students complete notes, have them checked by a teacher, and feel
comfortable they may move to the independent group. Students will work independently filling
out their notes and going through the examples. This allows students to move at their own
pace. They may work together within the group, ask questions to the teacher, and when they
are finished check their notes with they key.

Note Taking with teacher: Students who did not watch the video will take notes in a small
group with the teacher. The small group atmosphere makes sure students cant hide. There
is more time to watch students practice examples on their own.
4. Scavenger Hunt
Once students have successfully finished their notes and had them checked by the teacher,
they may move on to the Multistep Equation Scavenger Hunt.
Students will all start at different cards. They will write the letter of the card, solve the equation
while showing all work, the answer will be at the top of another card. They will continue on like

this until all cards are finished.

5. Summary.
