HUMA 1100
Civic Engagement Assignment
I am planning on attending an open house of meeting and
conversing with Senator Todd Weiler that will be representing me
and the city that I live in to the Utah State government. I
anticipate that this experience will help me to have a better
understanding of the politics that happens and that involves my
community that I live in, and that the senator will do his best to
answer any concerns and questions that will be hopefully
discussed in this coming session.
What I think I will learn is how human he is and that he is not
a perfect senator nor has all the answers to the questions that I
may ask him. That there may be some disagreements to what he
believes to be the correct action to take, even though there may
be other Republicans delegates and other citizens of the
community my think differently about. To also learn and hear
other opinions that will be expressed that I may not have thought
of when discussing certain topics.
This event that I will be attending relates to the class by
knowing that Senator Weiler will do his best to make sure that I

am happy and that he will take the thoughts, concerns, questions,

and ideas from me and others that will attend this open house to
other senators that will be in session, here shortly and discussing
the best way to handle the topics to be fair to everyone involved.
The activity that I attended was an Open House on January
14, 2016 at Centerville Mayor, Paul Cutlers house from 7:00pm9:00pm. Here I visited with Senator Todd Weiler. I talked to
Centerville Mayor Paul about why he was hosting such an event
with Senator Todd Weiler. He said that the Senator had asked him
a-while back if he would mind hosting an open house at his place
and having him come over to share his ideas with those who
come to visit. I learned that Senator Weiler is a great man who
loves his community and does his best to serve in a government
position.
Senator Weiler is a family man and is running for a second
term as a Senator and is a Republican. He has one of his oldest
who just got married a year ago and the next oldest who just went
on a mission.
Some of the topics that Senator Weiler discussed were of
great importance. One was dealing with marijuana being

legalized to use as a form of medicine. That bill did not pass last
year due to some loop holes, but he is more confident that it will
pass this year. He has been working with law enforcement to
know when marijuana is being used properly or not. Also, he
wants to make sure the right message is going out there to the
youth about legalizing marijuana and not sending the wrong
message to them by saying it is not okay to take it as a drug and
smoke it, but to use it as a medicine for healing and burns to help
the heal the body.
Breastfeeding in public is becoming an issue. To
discriminate against a woman who is breastfeeding at a work
place that has more than 15 employees should not be allowed.
The woman should be allowed to breastfeed the child in a room
that is accommodating to the womans needs.
Another big issue was about our education and dealing with
Common Core. The federal government wants to control how our
state education is being run. Senator Weiler stated that the Utah
Constitution governs education on how it should be dealt with.
The Utah State board is only the ones that can say yea or nay
about Common Core. The downside is that the schools never

informed the parents about what is being taught or is not being

taught when dealing with common core. That the whole deal
about common core is up to the school board to decide and not
the state government.
One person did ask about the meaning of separation of
church and state and how that is involved with the local
government. Senator Weiler said that The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints does have a big impact on local issues, but
that they only give council to him on their viewpoint. They do not
twist his arm, or make him feel obligated that this is the way that
it should go. They do own lots of land and when something of
importance comes up they give their two cents worth and leave it
up the local government to decide to pass or reject the bill.
Senator Weiler has noticed a change in public opinion over
the last several years such as on gay marriage and marijuana
wanting to being legalized instead of being banned.
Civic engagement means doing something as a civilian
engaging in some activity that is willing to serve others by making
them feel appreciated by me listening to them or helping them
within whatever help is needed; to help make my community a

better place to live. This assignment helped me to be civically

engaged by learning from the Senator about what his ideas are in
this coming session of Utah Congress and to see which bills will
affect me. I gladly enjoyed going over and learning what Senator
Todd was willing to talk about and to help me to do this
assignment. Yes, I would be gladly to do this assignment so I can
learn more about my community and how the local government
works.
This activity related to this course by dealing with human
rights and global justice. Those that are living a LGBT lifestyle
wants to have their human rights respected by the government
and not to be discriminated against for the lifestyle that they are
living. The United States Supreme Court listened to a case about
wither marriage should be allowed to the LGBT people. The vote
was yes it should be allowed in the whole entire United States of
America. To which now they can legally and lawfully get married
in any place in the United States. To now they are wanting to
have more human rights given to them such as not being
discriminated against for living their life style. That they should
be able to get a job, get a house, adopt a child, pay taxes, to be

able to have a business/religious to agree to do a wedding for

them. For some the human rights of LGBT feel are going to far
and keep on pushing the envelope to get more human right
freedoms for them to which they can get anything from anyone
just as much as anyone else not living that type of lifestyle.
Another way it related to this class is war. With the laws of
the land could help prevent a war from happening. It would start
with two different types of group of people having a discussion
about a topic and then someone says something that offends
someone else to the point it is no longer a leisure discussion but a
battle of words towards the other group. It can escalate to a war
of hate by using weapons of inflicting pain onto another group of
people. Whereas laws that are passed can help settle this battle
so it doesnt have to happen again.
It can also relate to happiness that we find in our soul. To
know that our local government is looking out the best of us
interest and that we dont have to fight our neighbors and that we
can live in harmony and peace. That the laws of the land
preserve our happiness and well-being to living here in the United

States and know that we dont have a dictator to rule over us and
taking our happiness away from us.
Prompt 1:
assignment?

What did you learn by creating the signature

Be specific with respect to your work on the

assignment and the topics/skills/concepts you learned in the

course.

What problems did you encounter in completing the

assignment? How did you troubleshoot them, if you did?

I learned that our local government tries their best to
represent the people that they are over and that Senator Weiler
wants to know what issues are on the minds of the people that he
is over that should be discussed when they are in session. He is
willing to discuss his feelings on various topics such as health
care, education, religion and the law and that he tries to put the
needs of the people first before his own needs. Even though the
dominant religion of LDS give their opinion on what they feel is
valid, he is still given the choice to choose what the law should be
for the state of Utah. I did not encounter any problems in coming
to this open house and having a Question and Answer with
Senator Weiler.
