Dear

FRUSTRATED?

For everyone praying for Gals Set Apart,

from the bottom of my heart... thank you.

Some of you may remember the advice column Dear Abby founded in 1956.
Folks would write letters and Abby would respond with her advice. But I have found
that the best advice-giver is our heavenly Father, Abba! {Romans 8:15} So, lets
see what He has to tell us concerning a topic that hits close to home for so many
womenfrustration.
I hear many of my friends speak about how they are frustrated. Frustrated at work.
Frustrated at home. Frustrated with this or that. I imagine all women are frustrated
at some time or another. One way to relieve your frustrations is to turn your heavenly
Father for advice. God has given us His Word to seek guidance during these times.
Utilize this amazing resource every chance you get, sisters.

{OUR ADVERTISERS}

1. Ask yourself, Did I cause it? The

Bible says, A man reaps what he sows
(Galatians 6:7). Many things in life frustrate us because we brought them on ourselves. We dont have anybody else to
blame.
Its frustrating to run out of gas on
a trip. But if you didnt stop to get gas
before you left, or decided to push your
luck, whos to blame?
2.

Ask yourself, What can I learn

from it? Use the irritation as an opportunity to grow in character and become
more like Christ.
How does God produce the fruit of the
Spirit in your life? He places you in the
opposite situation. If God wants to teach
you love, He will put you around unlovely people. If God wants to teach you
peace, He will put you in a situation of
total chaos so you can have inner peace.
Romans 8:28 says, All things work
together for good. There are many bad
things in the world, but all things work
togethereven the negativeGod can
turn into a positive if we will let Him.

3. Thank God in the situation. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, In everything give

thanks. You dont have to be thankful

for a bad situation. But you can be thankful in a bad situation. That frustration,
that irritation, that inconvenience, that
interruption, may be a blessing or an opportunity in disguise.
The Apostle Paul wanted to go to
Rome to preach, but God took him to
Rome to be in prison and write the letters
that formed the New Testament. Paul was
frustrated but God saw it as an opportunity to make him sit still long enough to
write the Bible.

4. Turn the frustration into a funny,

humorous event. The Bible says, A
cheerful heart is good medicine (Proverbs 17:22). A sense of humor is Gods
antidote for anger and frustration.
5.

Ask God to fill you with His love.

Why? Because 1 Corinthians 13:5 says,
Love is not easily angered. Love is
self-giving, not self-serving. We get irritated because we think everyone and everything has to revolve around us. Love
concentrates on the other person.
You will keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is steadfast, because he
trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against
the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 6:12

I cant begin to explain in words what
this dear sister in Christ means to me.
Angie Wheeless personifies faith in
ways that I have never seen in others
and she always demonstrates a kind
and gentle spirit
{1 Peter 3:4}.
I will never forget one day on
Facebook she posted, The good thing

imagine, that tugged on my heart in so
many ways and on so many levels just
I am sure it did yours when you just
read those words, too. Not many times
will you ever hear someone find the
good about having cancer. But that
is exactly what our faith can do.
Our Lord and Savior can bring you
strength in the midst of any struggle if
your faith is placed solely in Him.
Angie completed her post with,

pleasing unto the Lord!
It is my pleasure and an honor that

Strength Through the Struggle

Tell us about when you first accepted Christ as
Savior.
I was raised at church and in a Christian household so I feel that coming to Christ was more of a
gradual experience for me than it is for some people. However, when I was in high school, I made
the decision to completely dedicate my life to God
after spending several weeks at Camp Dixie (as
both a camper and a counselor in training). I was
baptized that summer at my home church along
with a dear friend.
What do you think is the number one reason women today arent rooted in the faith as
believers?
I think one of the hardest things women face today
is pressure to be all things to all people; to have the
perfect life if you will. We devote more time to
trying to accomplish this impossible task and not
enough time seeking Gods plan for our day to day
life. Dont get me wrong, we are very often doing
these things with the best of intentions and with the
goal of taking care of our families. But we must
seek what God wants us to be doing each and every
dayeven in the small things.

If you had a non-believer come to you with

questions or debate concerning their lack of
faith, how would you react or encourage them?
I have coworkers from all over the world and thus
many are non-believers. I find that the best thing
I can do is listen to them and get to know them.
If you take the time to understand a persons history, to hear what it is that they believe (or why
they question your beliefs), you can talk to them
about those specific issues. This is less overwhelming to you and to them. Minister to them one day
at a time. As for encouraging them, we have talked
many times in my Sunday School class about encouraging others and sharing Christ simply by
how you present yourself day to day. Be a positive,
happy person and treat people kindly (just like the
Golden Rule says!) and people will notice that you
are different [set apart] and will want to know why.
What do you feel is the main thing in todays
culture that is so impactful in a negative way
that may keep people from drawing closer
to God?
I think the busyness and complexity of modern life
prevents us from drawing closer to God. We live

in a 24-hour society with very little down time. Its

so hard to find quiet time to spend time with God.
What do you feel is the main thing that helps a
person maintain their faith? And keep active in
their faith?
First, regular church attendance is key to not only
maintaining your faith but also growing in it. I also
think surrounding yourself with Christian friends
as a support group is essential.
Tell us about a significant time/situation that
had the biggest impact on your relationship
with God?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and
then again in 2013. It sounds strange to say but I
have received the biggest blessings through these
times. One of those blessings was learning to fully
and completely rely on God. I learned that when
you give a situation over to God to handle (really
and truly give it to him), you gain such an amazing
sense of peace. Nothing is bigger than God! Facing
these health struggles also strengthened my prayer
life. I cant describe it with words but there were so
many days that I could literally feel people praying for me. I always knew prayer was an important
part of a Christian life, but for the first time, I was
feeling that too. Im still working on getting my
prayer life to be what it should be (if you havent
seen the movie War Room, see it!!) but it sure has
come a long way since 2011! God used this time in
my life to show me how to focus on what was really
important in life.
If a young girl came to you who had just accepted Jesus as savior what is the advice you would
give her?
I would advise her to seek out two types of people.
1. A group of Christian friends. Its so much
easier to walk with God if you have others walking
along with you.
2. Christian mentors. We all need those to seek
advice from and learn from.
What do you feel is the most challenging part
about being a Christian mom is todays culture?
I think the most challenging part of being a Christian mom is trying to help my girls navigate a world
that is less Christian every day. I cant explain why
so many bad things are happening or shield them
from hurts and bad influences. So, I pray for them

We devote more time to trying to accomplish this

impossible task and not enough time seeking Gods
plan for our day to day life. Dont get me wrong, we
are very often doing these things with the best of intentions and with the goal of taking care of our families. But we must seek what God wants us to be doing
each and every day and even in the small things.
a lot and encourage them to keep being the person
God wants them to be regardless of whats going
on around them.
How do you feel your faith sets you apart from
the world?
I think its the joy we have as Christians. This is but
our temporary home.
How do you feel about social media?
Social media certainly has a lot of problems but
I am thankful for it. I love that I can share in the
great moments in my friends lives and also that
I can pray for them when they need it (and they
for me). Some days, I see a devotion or just some
thoughts that someone has shared and its exactly
what I need. God can use even social media!
There is a lot of controversy within our country today between believers and non-believers,
what is your advice to Christians who feels overwhelmed by it all or even disappointed in this
nation?
I think its the same advice that I give my girls. We
have to keep being the person God has called us to
be and He will take care of the rest. Keep believing
and keep sharing God!
Do you have a favorite scripture? What is it?
I have three!
Proverbs 3:5,6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and
lean not on your own understanding. In all
your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path.
This is an all-time favorite of mine and is a daily
reminder to let God lead!

Philippians 1:3
I thank my God upon every remembrance
of you.
This verse is engraved in our wedding rings and
has always been a special verse in my marriage.
God made us for each other.
James 1:2-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,
whenever you face trials of many kinds, because
you know that the testing of your faith produces
perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work
so that you may be mature and complete, not
lacking anything.
This verse became a favorite during my cancer
battle. It sustained me on many days.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I just want to encourage other women to lift each
other up, pray for each other daily. Give thanks to
God every day for your blessings (even when the
only good thing you can say about a day is that its
over, thank God for bringing you through it). Find
the joy in every day. Gods creations are full of joy if
you look for it.

esterday, I performed a ballet in

my hotel room just for God. Yep!
Complete with pointed toes, leaps twirls, back
leans, and plis.
Admittedly, I was a little scared I might throw
my back out on the leans. My knees also creaked
just a tad on the plies, but actually it was quite
beautiful. I only know that because thats what I
felt like I heard Him say at the end. When I appropriately went to my knees and threw my hands
back behind me for a dramatic conclusion. I dont
know if I got a standing ovation or not, its hard
to see those kinds of things from here. I am also
not sure if He applauded, I couldnt hear from the
sobsmy own, not His.
I know thats what you were thinking. Oh!I am
sorry. I have caused some of you the discomfort
of being embarrassed for me. Oh please dont be,
save it for times I get far more undignified than
that.
Anyway, I am sane enough to believe that just
below the surface of your embarrassments of me
you are just the teensiest bit jealous.
As long as no one can read your thoughts
Could you admit, you sure wish you knew how
to dance the ballet?
Who said I know how? I havent had a lesson since childhood and I quit because I was the
worst one in the class.
I dont know how to sing either but that doesnt
keep me from bellowing my lungs dry.
Actually, I know about jealously
Its one of my least favorite feelings, but I felt
it just recently.
One of my coworkers was called by God to

6

a 30-day fast of just juice and water so that she

could binge on Him.
Never one to want to be left out, I told her that
I had asked God to tell me of some way I could
observe a fast of sorts in support of her in her
thirty days.
I did. He turned me down flat.
I had the humiliation of sitting at the same
lunch table with her for 12 days at work while I
ate like a glutton and she drank her clear broth.
And, secretly, I feared she was His favorite. Dont
get me wrong, I want her to be his favorite. Just
like I want YOU to be His favorite. I just want to
be His favorite, too.
And somehow, I thought He couldnt approve
of my fajitas and salsa as much as He approved
of her broth.
I hugged my coworkers tight and said goodbye a week ago and left to come all the way to
the other side of the world for this taping. I miss
home. And I miss work immensely. But to be honest, I looked so forward to being with God all
alone. Two nights ago, I ordered room service.
A really wonderful meala filet cooked to medium perfection, with flamed brandy sauce (dont
worry, they say the alcohol cooks right out. I
dont know though I did feel a little woozy afterwards), a baked potato and sour cream, lots of
bread and butter. And, I paused to bless the food.
I told Him how thankful I was to have a date with
Him and to eat the meal all alone with Him. Then
I sopped the first bite in the sauce and then I remembered my coworker, and felt another twinge
of guilt and a condemning lesser spirituality and
I wondered, Would God bless this taping more if

Then, I realized,
that God is where
He calls us.
Whether we are
feasting and
going to the ballet
or fasting and
going to the
desert.

I fasted? Then, I realized, that God is where He calls us.

Whether we are feasting and going to the ballet or fasting
and going to the desert. (Do you know what? Just then when
I wrote the word desert, I accidently typed in an extra s and
spelled dessert?) Thats me for ya. I suppose Ill die trying
to find desserts in my deserts. And, dont tell me theres no such
thing. I have yet to come out of a desert without some kind of
dessert. Granted, sometimes I ate a lot of locus before the honey
ever came, but came it finally did!
If one of these days you happen to look down on my cold,
hard, dead body in a casketmy only hope is that I will still
have chocolate all over my mouth.
You may have to be called to a fast, but you never have to wait
to be called to the ballet. You can dance anytime. Even in the
desert. Oops. I almost wrote dessert again.
Maybe that was it all along the dance in
the desert is the dessert.
What did you ask? What song did I
perform yesterday in my room? Ahhh, a
slaying arrangement of
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
be all else but naught to me, save that
thou art; be thou my best thought in the
day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word,
be thou ever with me, and I with thee
Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy
true son; be thou in me dwelling, and I
with thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor mans empty praise:
be thou mine inheritance now and always;
be thou and thou only the first in my heart;
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, thou heavens bright sun,
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.
I am so relieved, some of you who looked pretty embarrassed for
me earlier look a little less horrified now, thank goodness. I really dont
set out to make sure people know I am weird. I like for people to like
me. I just want to be sure they really know WHO they think they like. I
have played like someone that others like for too long. Still, if you like
me again I think I will stop while I am ahead and not tell you about
the peppier song I put on next when I then slid with my socks on the
marble entryway in my hotel roomsoared to the music. If you are
new to this, please dont try this at home. Whatever you do, start with
the ballet. After all, sliding in your socks comes with a little maturity.

The Mere mention of

By Karen R. Smith

crolling through my iTunes library and

I noticed my list goes from Swagger
Jagger to Sweet, Sweet Song of Salvation. Now thats variety if ever I knew it. I wondered what would my Christian friends think if
they knew I had such a wide variety of songs.
But then, I remembered, nothing is hidden from
the Lord. He knows my playist, why should I
care what other people think? There are so many
different ways I could answer that question. I
will elaborate on the different view points in a
bit, for now... lets talk some more about music.
Do you like to listen to music? What are your
top-played songs in your playlist or what is your
favorite CD to jam to while driving along in

eenshot of my iTunes

Yes, thats an actual scr

your car? Do you find yourself listening to different types of music to fit your mood? Do you
listen whatever the radio is already dialed in to?
Do you handpick your playlists depending on
your activity? Why? I know, silly questions. But
I think its important.
Studies have shown that what we absorb into
ourselves is what goes back out. Think about it
on another level. If you watched R-rated movies all day with lots of vulgar language, eventually your heart and mind would become so
comfortable in hearing that kind of talk that
it would probably not bother you as much overtime andmore than likelyyou would spout
out four letter words like it was
nothing and never consider
the person next to you who is
offended by it.
You become too comfortable doing things that are
not pleasing to God Let no
corrupt word proceed out of
your mouth, but what is good
for necessary edification, that
it may impart grace to the
hearers. {Ephesians 4:29}
I am taken back in time
twenty yearsto when I
was in college sitting in fine
art class. Drawing 101. This
class was mandatory to
receive my degree in graphic design. I always enjoyed
drawingbut it comes very
hard for meI also always
knew it was not what I
wanted to do full time as
a career. Oh no, give me

my hand any day over a pencil and paper.

This particular day we were told to do one-minute drawings using charcoalwhile listening to
musicon our newsprint paper. (Oh! The memories of smudged fingers.) But every minute our
instructor would change the music, we were
to turn to a new page in our pads and begin a
new study or rather, drawing. He would play
a different genre of music every minute. Sometimes it was very aggressive, hard rock music.
Sometimes it was mellow ballads. Other times
he would play upbeat, hip hop music. When the
class was over were to compare each drawing
and visually see the difference in our drawingshow the drawings reflected the moods we
felt as we heard each type of song.
I actually use this technique a lot in my own
job now. The publisher of the magazine that I
design is a very classy, cultured, well-versed
gentleman. He travels the world and brings back
editorial material and photography to use in his
stories. I typically play classical music when I
am designing these features and I can honestly
say it really helps me to design a much classier
page.
Our associate editor, for example, typically
writes cover stories with a more hip, upbeat
theme so I usually play one of my pop Pandora stations. Crazy, but it seems to work for me.
What I am absorbing at the moment is what I
can put back out.
The same thing happens in our spiritual life.
It seems so clich, but if you read Gods Word
each day and truly apply it to your day, you will
not only be absorbing His Truth, but you will
able to put it back out there in all you do in your
daily walk.
Is it easy? Not always. (Not with the garbage
thrown at us constantly on TV, radio, film, ad-

Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up
his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel
better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
1 Samuel 16:23
vertisements, etc.) But its nice (and necessary
to the Christians life) to have that familiarity
of the Holy Spirit living inside you that you are
constantly tuned into, like your very own Holy
Ghost Radio Channel!
Did you know that David was asked to play
his harp for the King Saul to soothe him and
scripture says that it actually drove out the
evil spirits. A calming, soothing music choice
(played by a man after Gods own heart mind
you) will bring relief. {1 Samuel 16:23}
If you turn off your God Channel, eventually you will begin listening to something else.
Yes, probably secular music. (And this doesnt
just apply to the music in your life.)
Ahh, I know you are thinking to yourself
that I have secular music on my playlist. Correct. However, I do find myself playing Sweet,
Sweet Song of Salvation a lot more than Swagger Jagger. Thats not a pat on my back but I can
tell I feed myself more with Christian musicI
know I have that drive to serve Him constantly
throughout my day. I do enjoy some (key word
here, some) hip hop music, I really do. Listening
to songs that are not performed by Christian artists, is not a conviction of mine. I do, however,
respect those who are convicted of it.
The Bible clearly explains things in black
and white, there are no gray areas when it
comes to salvation. If I were listening to certain music that was vulgar (which I dont) then
I would feel His Spirit directing me away from
it. And, I have felt thatplenty of timesin
different aspects of life. And oh, how thankful I am for a forgiving God! He knows every
hair on my head, He knows me more intimately
than anyone. He knows when I need correction.
I absolutely love it when my Father disciplines
me.That is truly one of the best feelings to enjoy

as a daughter of the Most High. {Luke 12:7}

Back to my first point. Should we care about
what others think when we have just made the
point that we are never hidden from Gods eyes?
We immediately think that if God is watching
and seeing allthat is all that matters. No my
friend. Although that is true, our omnipresent
God is always with thee, please remember your
witness is, too. The witness of your faith. {Acts
22:15}
Things you say and write can hurt your
witness. Ways you react to people can, too. The
way you live your life (without speaking one
single word) is your most powerful witness to
everyone else in your world.
My friends know me. They know I am a Jesus-loving gal! They know nothing on my playlist would take precedence over my Lord. But, if
I ever learned that it did hurt my witness, then
it would be time for me to delete some tunes.
{Romans 14}
We all fall short of His glory, everyday.
Thank you Lord for being a forgiving God,
everyday. Thats where repentance comes into
play, though. Once you have asked forgiveness,
truly repented in your heart and given that burden over to God, make a conscious decision to
not go out into the world and do it again. What
you absorb daily is what you can put back out
and give to others.
I challenge youfor just one dayto allow
the songs that give GLORY to God overpower
the others in your playlist when you make your
song selection. Take notice of how much better
you feel at the end of that day.
Allow Gods Word to overpower every decision you make in this world. Live in that world,
but do not be a part of it. {1 John 2:15} GSA

his is the last issue of Gals Set Aparts very first year! Wow! I am so
excited, too. I cant think of a better way to wrap up this first year
than with an issue including ads. Thank you to our first advertisers:
Outlaw Mobile Homes of Mount Olive, N.C.
Southern Roots Boutique of Four Oaks, N.C.
Parnell Psychological Services of Smithfield, N.C.
KRS Digital Designs of Four Oaks, N.C.
I am also very thankful for every single of you whom I KNOW have
prayed for this publication. The out pour of support and blessings that
have come my way have been truly humbling. To receive your texts, messages or calls expressing how much an issue has helped you galswell, I
can only give God the glory and He is the ONLY one who deserves it!
This fourth quarter issue has mailed out slightly later than I had anticipated. I have taken on a lot more responsibility with my full-time job and
my side business has been hopping this quarter. With a full time job, two
precious girls, an awesome husband, a household to run, a side business
to work and a Sunday School class to teach, my cup has runneth over...
but in such awesome ways! I am not at all complaining, just wanted to
explain why this issue was a little later than you were thinking. I pray for
GSA a lot, as you can imagine, and with each prayer I am always directed
to keep it going. So, though I have no idea what is in store for this little
magazine, our great, big God sure does. I am trusting. No doubt, trusting.
This will hit your mailboxes during the busy Christmas season. Enjoy it
gals. Try very hard to not get so consumed with the hustle and the bustle.
Love to your husband = time.
Love to your children = time.
Love to your family = time.
Love to your friends = time.
And most importantly...
Love to your heavenly Father = time.
Be sure to spend some time with Him each day. Honor Him with your
time. Serve Him with your time. Take time to praise Him. Take time hear
His instruction and obey. Oh! What a blessing you will receive. And,
then... take a deep breath, wipe away that tear and take time to thank
Him. Thank your Creator for making you. He made you to do His good
work. You are a part of His Will.
For (YOU) are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good
works, which God prepared in advance for (YOU) to do.

Prayer is Everyones Business

As I searched through my archives of grandomothers Silver Threads, I came across a stack of
her things stapled together. No certain theme or order. I must have gathered them years ago and
stapled them together as to not lose it allbut nonetheless, special words from her heart and great
Bible study notes. I love finding her treasures; cards, poems, letters, advice.
I found a cover sheet titled Prayer is Everyones Business and attached to it is this great, valuable list of exactly where you find the different examples concerning prayer in scripture. She began
her handwritten (I have typed it here) notes with the definition of prayerha! Now, I see where I get
the need to always want to define words in the articles of GSA.

Prayer: A request or praise to God

LIDA M. ROGERS
This piece is a (partial) reprint from
Silver Threads, a home-missions
newsletter originally published in
(this issue the date is unknown),
written by the late Lida M. Rogers. She
began her newsletter in the 1990s.
Issues included encouragement,
prayers, Bible studies, a collection of
her poems and, of course, loaded with
scripture references.
FUN FACT: Lida Rogers was my grandmother. Born in 1925, she lived her entire life dedicated to the Lord and gaining souls for Him. She was a licensed
minister in the Pentecostal Holiness
denomination and preached more than
half her life. She entered the gates of
Glory in 2005. I pray that this section
of GSA will be a tribute to and a revival
of her home-missions newsletter.
*I have made only a few punctuation
corrections, but have left everything
the way she had originally worded it.
