HEALTH RISKS CAUSE BY

FOOD
Food is fuel for your body. It has a direct impact on how you feel as well as
on your overall health. Fast food isnt necessarily bad, but in many cases its
highly processed and contains large amounts of carbohydrates, added sugar,
unhealthy fats, and salt (sodium)
These foods are often high in calories yet offer little or no nutritional value.
When fast food frequently replaces nutritious foods in your diet, it can lead
to poor nutrition, poor health, and weight gain.
According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, most people
underestimate the number of calories theyre eating in a fast-food
restaurant. A 2013 study published in JAMA Pediatrics showed that children
and adolescents take in more calories in fast food and other restaurants than
at home. Eating at a restaurant added between 160 and 310 calories a day

WHAT ARE SOME EFFECTS

THAT FAST FOODS CAN
HAVE ON THE BODY
Lets' list some effects fast food can have on ones body.

FOOD ALLERGIES AND

INTOLERANCE
Food Allergy and Intolerance are NOT the same thing.
A food allergy is an abnormal reaction of the bodys immune system to a
particular food. Some of you may have experience where some food do not
agree with you. However, if you ever feel like it causes closing of your
throat, then it is not an intolerance, you must get to the ER or call 9-1-1 and
you may further tests done(allergy test)
Why does this happen?
*Food intolerance happens because the body has difficulty digesting certain
substances in food, or because certain substances have a direct effect on the
body in some way. Food intolerance can cause symptoms such as diarrhea,
bloating and stomach cramps. However, with food intolerance there is no
allergic reaction and the immune system is generally not involved.

ALLERGY TO FOOD
A food allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body's immune system to a particular food. This tends
to cause unpleasant and unwanted effects (symptoms).
There are Two Categories of Food Allergies:
1. Immunogloubin E (IgE) medicated- symptoms result from the bodys immune system making
antibodies called E (IgE) antibodies. These antibodies react with a certain food.
2. Non-IgE medicated- other parts of the bodys immune system react to a certain food. This
reaction cause symptoms, but doe not involve an IgE antibody.
IgE medicated food allergies- most common infants and children are eggs, milk, peanuts, tree
nuts, soy and wheat. The allergic reaction can involve the skin, mouth, eyes, lungs, heart,
stomach, and brains.

SYMPTOMS OF FOOD
ALLERGIES
1. Skin rash, itchy, hives
2. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
3. Shortness of breath, trouble breathing, wheezing
4. Stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea
5. Felling like something awful is about to happen
.Some allergy symptoms are mild, but some can be severe. Where they could passible go
into shock, or throat starts to clear up. These folks may carry an epipen with them or have
one in the nurses office.
. EpiPen is an injection containing epinephrine, a chemical that narrows blood vessels and
opens airways in the lungs. These effects can reverse severe low blood pressure,
wheezing, severe skin itching, hives, and other symptoms of an allergic reaction.
.This is not to be taken lightly, if you start to feel wheezy and have an allergy get help
right away.

EXAMPLES OF FOOD ISSUES

* food poisoning
* diarrhea
* migraines headaches
* Eczema
* Celiac Disease
* Gluten
*Asthma

SUN AND WATER SAFETY

What benefits does sun provide?
* provides Vitamin D
* provides a good night sleep
* helps enhance a persons mood
* can help with depression
* helps older adults with bone health

HAZARDS OF TOO MUCH

SUN EXPOSURE
Sun Burn:
More than one-third of adults and nearly 70% of children admit they've gotten sunburned within
the past year, according to the CDC.
Sunburn is the most obvious sign that you've been sitting outside for too long. But sun damage
isn't always visible. Under the surface, ultraviolet light can alter your DNA, prematurely aging
your skin. Over time, DNA damage can contribute to skin cancers, including deadly melanoma.

Signs of Sunburn
When you get a sunburn, your skin turns red and hurts. If the burn is severe, you can develop
swelling and sunburn blisters. You may even feel like you have the flu -- feverish, with chills,
nausea, headache, and weakness.
A few days later, your skin will start peeling and itching as your body tries to rid itself of sundamaged cells.

TYPES OF BURNS FROM THE

SUN
First Degree Burn- this is where your skin
becomes really red and sore to the touch, it only
effects the outside layer of your skin.
These sunburns are mild and can usually be treated
at home. Your skin type affects how easily you
become sunburned. People with fair or freckled skin,
blond or red hair, and blue eyes usually sunburn
easily. Your age also affects how your skin reacts to
the sun. The skin of children younger than 6 and
adults older than 60 is more sensitive to sunlight.

DEGREE SUNBURN

Your skin type affects how easily you become sunburned. People with
fair or freckled skin, blond or red hair, and blue eyes usually sunburn
easily. Your age also affects how your skin reacts to the sun. The skin
of children younger than 6 and adults older than 60 is more sensitive to
sunlight. Skin that is red and painful and that swells up and blisters
may mean that deep skin layers and nerve endings have been damaged
( second-degree burn). This type of sunburn is usually more painful
and takes longer to heal.

3 DEGREE SUNBURN AND

TREATMENT
RD

This is a very serious burn! It will have blisters on the

area that is burned. You may need to go seek medical
attention.
Sunburn - Home Treatment
Use cool cloths on sunburned areas.
Take frequent cool showers or baths.
Apply soothing lotions that contain aloe vera to sunburned areas. Topical steroids
(such as 1% hydrocortisone cream) may also help with sunburn pain and swelling
Most sunburns, even those that cause a few blisters, can be treated at home. But
if a blistering burn covers 20% or more of the body (a child's whole back), seek
medical attention, Allen says. Anyone with a sunburn who is suffering fevers and
chills should also seek medical help

CANCER OF THE SUN

Stats : (remember you can get cancer from the tanning bed as well)
Each year in the US, over 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin
cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people
Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer
than all other cancers combined
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a
lifetime

TIPS ON PROTECTING
YOURSELF FROM THE SUN
Limit your sun exposure- protect your skin from the suns UV rays
by using a SPF sunscreen.
SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB)
rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more
closely linked to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute
to the risk of skin cancer.
an SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays; an SPF 30
product blocks 97% of UVB rays; and an SPF 45 product blocks
about 98% of rays.
Avoid being in the sun from the times of 10:00AM and 4:00PM,
these are when the suns rays are the strongest.
Wear a hat and sunglasses and long sleeve shirts if you burn easily.

WATER SAFETY- TIPS

Wear a life jacket if riding on a boat or if you do not know how to
swim
Do not dive in shallow water
If you are at the beach:
Watch out for any dangers such as dangerous waves, do not try any
new adventures without supervision- surfing, long boarding, and jet
skiing.
If you are not a strong swimmer then avoid going out to deep into
the water. Avoid swimming if you are extremely tired.
Do not do any of these things alone, always have someone with
you.

VEHICLE SAFETY
Always wear a seatbelt
Do not get into a car with someone who had been
drinking excessively
ride with people that are safe drivers- not joy riding or
going at excessive speeds
Car accidents can happen at a drop of a dime
Pay attention to other people on the road, watch out for
pedestrians and people on bikes
Do not TEXT and DRIVE when you are older enough to
drive

GUN SAFETY- MORE YOUNG

PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM
GUNS THAN THEY ARE IN
CAR ACCIDENTS

GUN SAFETY
Observe basic gun safety rules if someone in your family, or anyone
else you know, keeps guns at home.
Guns should be stored unloaded, in a LOCKED cabinet.
Bullets should be stored in a different LOCKED cabinet.
A gun should never be pointed at anyone, or played with at all.
Always treat a gun like it is loaded at all times.
If anyone at school happens to mention he/she has a gun or shows
you one, tell an adult right away!
Remember, it could be a toy gun, but even those guns look real!
