Subject ____English/Language Arts___

Grade 2, One on One w/ 2 students (15 minutes each)

Rationale for lesson:

The goal is to increase the students fluency and comprehension through leveled readers that are
coordinated with the story from the reading textbook.
Learning outcomes/objectives:
Understanding that books have a title and author, characters, and a setting.
Taking a picture walk to see what the story is about and what they think is happening from
looking at the pictures.
Making predictions about what will happen next in the story.
Increasing fluency by listening to teacher read the book the first time through, the student
reading with the teacher the second time through, and then reading the book by himself the third
time through.
Increasing comprehension by asking Where?, What? questions related to the text.
If have extra time, read a book that the students can take an AR test on after reading at least 3
times with the teacher.
Assessment of student outcomes:
Checking for comprehension throughout story and providing corrective feedback. Monitoring
oral reading for fluency and blending CVC words.
Worksheet with skills related to the leveled book to see how they can apply phonics concepts and
visualize the book with minimal help.
Related Foundations/Indiana? Academic Standard:
2.RF.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the five components of reading (print concepts,
phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and fluency and comprehension) to build
foundational reading skills.
2.RF.4.2 Use knowledge of the six major syllable patterns (CVC, CVr, V, VV, VCe, Cle) to
decode two-syllable words, independent of context.
2.RF.5 Orally read grade-level appropriate or higher texts smoothly and accurately, with
expression that connotes comprehension at the independent level.

2.RL.2.1 Ask and answer questions (e.g., who was the story about; why did an event happen;
where did the story happen) to demonstrate understanding of main idea and key details in a text.
2.RL.4.1 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to
demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Materials Needed:
Leveled Readers for this weeks story: Where They Live and Rob, Mom, and Socks
Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Teaching procedures:
Introduce the title and the author. Take a picture walk and discuss the pictures. Guide
the student to make predictions about what they think is going to happen next. Point out
the sight words in the story. Read the book and the student follow along the first time.
Read the book with the student the second time.
Guided & independent practice:
Have the student read the book orally to the teacher the third time. Ask the student the
comprehension questions on the handout related to the story. Complete the worksheets
with visualizing, phonics, and vocabulary related to the story.
Lessons repeated every day for 15 minutes with each student. The leveled books are kept with
the handouts on the bookshelf next to my desk. I meet with the students from 10:45-11:10 each
day when possible. One student works on a learning game on his own while I take turns working
one on one with each of them. Possible AR books for the students to read are also on my
bookshelf on the students levels.

For your other lesson plans you may do a slimmed down version of the SMWC lesson plan--include the
subject, overview, standards that you hope to meet, how you will present, materials that will be used.
Write them as if you were absent, a sub could follow your plans.
