The 3C Social Media Challenge

In order to help prepare you for part of your novel study, you are going to be asked
to try your best to participate in the 3C Social Media Challenge. Here is the
challenge: How long can you go without using social media, social texting, or social
gaming?
Before, you read any further, please understand that in asking you to do this,
I am not trying to point out the social media or social texting is bad. Rather, the
purpose of the challenge is to help you examine the degree of importance of these
activities to you and to examine why they are so important to you. You will be using
the perspectives at various points in the novel study.

So, here is the assignment, the expectations, and how it

will work:
The challenge begins on Wednesday, April 6 th and will run until the evening of
Wednesday, April 13th. Each day of the week of the challenge, you will be asked to
journal about your attempts to do the challenge. Here are some things your journal
might contain:
a) What are your thoughts and feelings about this challenge?
b) To what extent do these thoughts and feelings change over the course of the
week?
c) What is it like, not social texting, social gaming, or using social media?
d) If you cant give up social media or social texting, what is it about these
activities that make them impossible for you to give up? What sorts of things
are you doing with social media that makes giving it up temporarily a hard
thing to do?
e) If you tried to give it up, what sorts of things have you tried doing instead of
these activities?
f) What observations can you make about the times you were able to go
without social texting, social gaming, or social media?
g) How long were you able to go without these things? If (when) you started
using social media, social gaming, or started social texting, again, what made
you go back what was it that you just had to do or find out?
NOTE: If you do not use social media, if you dont game socially, or dont text
socially at all, you will have a different series of questions to consider as we go
through this journal process. Some of these will be posted daily on the board for you
to consider. Others will include: Why dont you engage in social media, social
gaming, or social texting? What do you do instead? What are the benefits (for you)
of not participating in all of these activities? What are the drawbacks for you?

At the end of the process, you will consolidate your journal entries into
one journal (with many paragraphs) and put them into a good copy and
hand them in.
