Bus System Overview

Bus Support System
The power bus system is supported,
braced, and isolated by a bus support
molded of high-strength, non-tracking
glass-filled polyester material
The horizontal power bus is mounted
on-edge in a vertical plane providing
maximum strength against magnetic
forces
Recessed in channels for added
support and to minimize dust and
moisture
Vertical power bus bars are
continuously braced and encapsulated
by a polycarbonate, molded bus cover
isolating the vertical power bus from the
other vertical phases, and from the
horizontal power bus

Reduce Electrical Exposure

Reduce personnel exposure to the energized

electrical equipment
Center placement of bus

Horizontal bus is not accessible for accidental

contact

Horizontal bus is separate from where cable

entry is located

Automatic shutters

Provide immediate isolation from the

vertical bus when unit is removed from column

Form 4b isolation and separation

Testing Under Conditions of Arcing Due

to Internal Fault
Testing was conducted and evaluated to be in compliance with IEC/TR
61641 Edition 2.0 2008-01 (Enclosed low-voltage switchgear and controlgear
assemblies Guide for testing under conditions of arcing due to internal fault)

This guide applies only to enclosed low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies when
doors and covers are closed and correctly secured

It provides criteria for assessing the mechanical and thermal effects of an internal arcing fault,
but does not cover all effects which may constitute a risk

Additional arc fault containing requirements were addressed (Motor Control

Center, Rated 1000 Volts (and less), exceeding IEC standards)

Copyright 2013 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved.44

Test Assessment Criteria

IEC/TR 61641

Criteria 1-5: personal protection

Criteria 1-6: ASSEMBLY protection
Criteria 1-7: ASSEMBLY suitable for limited continued operation
IEC/TR

1
Correctly secured doors, covers, etc., do not open.
2
Parts (of the ASSEMBLY), which may cause a hazard, do not fly off. (This includes large
parts or those with sharp edges, for example inspection windows, pressure relief flaps, cover plates, etc.)
3
Arcing does not cause holes to develop in the freely accessible external parts of the enclosure
as a result of burning or other effects.
4
The indicators arranged vertically do not ignite. (D9: Indicators 30 cm from enclosure, up to a
maximum height of 2 m, with a fabric weight of 150 g/m2.)
5
The protective circuit for accessible parts of the enclosure is still effective.
6
The ASSEMBLY is capable of confining the arc to the defined area where it ignited, and there
is no propagation of the arc to other areas within the ASSEMBLY. (D7: An arc in a withdrawable unit shall
not travel to the bus system, adjacent withdrawable units or to the cable compartment; D8: An arc in the
bus system shall not travel to a withdrawable unit, to a cable or other compartment.)
7
After clearing of the fault or after isolation or disassembly of the affected functional units in the
defined area, emergency operation of the remaining ASSEMBLY is possible. This is verified by a dielectric
test with a value of 1,5 times the rated operational voltage during 1 min.
