In 882, Oleg of Novgorod conquered Kiev and founded the state of Kievan Rus. ; Novgorod's size as well as its political, economic, and cultural influence made it the second most important city in Kievan Rus. According to a custom, the elder son and heir of. ‘the ruling Kievan monarch was sent to rule Novgorod even as a minor. Of all their princes, Novgorodians most cherished the memory of Yaroslaw the Wise, who had sat as Prince of Novgorod in 1010-1019, while his father, Viadimir the Great, was a prince in Kiev. Yaroslav promulgated the first written code of laws among the Eastern Slavs and is said to have granted the city a number of freedoms or privileges. In 1136, the Novgorodians dismissed their prince Vsevolod Mstislavich. This date is seen as the traditional beginning of the Novgorod Republic. The city was able to invite and dismiss a number of princes over the next two centuries, but the princely office was never abolished and powerful princes, such as Alexander Nevsky, could assert their will in the city Tegardless of what Novgorodians' said, At this time, Kievan Rus was geografically the largest and one of the most cultural advanced states in northern Europe. As time went on, < however, B increasingly numerous princes} * came to identify | more with their local regions then with the large polity. They fought amongst themselves, often seeking external . alliances with the ‘Cuman, Polish or is tin) P| % Hungarian, and 7 u against foreign £ 3 J invaders. In 1223 a Russian army was defeated, bya ee 4 ' Mongol force, at Kalka river. Subsequently the south Russian principalities of Kiev and Chernigov were completely RA ‘subjugated, the 5 Ta other, with the exception of Novgorod, were reduced to vassal status. Principaltes of Kievan Rus, 1054-1132, before Teutonic Order and Mongol Horde appearances Novgorod was never conquered by the Mongols. The Mongol Army turned back about 100 kilometers from the city, not because of the city's strength, but probably because the Mongol commanders did not want to get bogged down in the marshlands surrounding the city. However, the grand princes of Moscow, who acted as tax collectors for the khans of the Golden Horde, did collect tribute in Novgorod. Novgorod, though independent, had its own problems with aggression by Swedes and the crusading Catholic Forces led by the Teutonic and Livonian orders. ‘Alexander Nevsky, the great Rus hero, as elected prince of Novgorod, won victories over the Swedes at the Neva in 1240 and the Teutonic Knight at the Lake Peipus in 1242. TACTIS AND DEPLOYMENT The most common battle formation of the Rus’ army placed infantry in the center forming a shield wall with Kopejshchik spearmen protecting the Luchnik archers, with cavalry forces on both flanks. Carts and wagons were used to construct field fortifications. The right flank of the formation traditionally was the most important and generally took the offensive role against the more vulnerable left flank of enemy infantry formations. Rus armies used the landscape to help guard their back and flanks, particularly important for fighting nomad forces. At the start of the Recoinnassance phase, before all other terrains are placed, a Novgorod player can decide to choose a river in addition to any other terrain type used according with the rules on page 67 of Deus Vult rulebook. VOYEVODA’S STANDARD The banner (styag) was very important in battlefield communication and movement. Before battle, the army formed up around the banner and it continued to function for orientation in the chaos of combat, indicating the progress of battle, and serving as a rally point. If the enemy “reached and hewed down the banner’, defeat was imminent, and this event was usually followed by the retreat of the army: the battle’s result was determined by the fate of the banner. For this reason, taking the banner was a major battle objective and the most intense fighting took place around it. Originally the banner was decorated with the Prince’s emblem, but by the end of the 14th century, was substitute by the image of Christ. A Voyevoda’s Standard must begins the battle attached to a Novgorod Druzhina (Senior or Junior) or Kopejshchik unit and can never leave the unit. The standard moves with his unit in the same way as an attached battle leader. A battle leader can attach himself to a unit with an attached standard as normal. EFFECTS: A Voyevoda's Standard follow the same rules of Army Standards (page 79 on Deus Vult rulebook), with the exception that friendly units (but not allied units) within 8” of the army standard can reroll failed Disorder Tests and can roll 2 dice and choose the lowest score when are forced to roll for Breaking Ranks.
