PROJECT PROPOSAL
Section 1:
i.
Working Title or Theme of Final Major Project
Title- From Shadows
Theme- First-Person Shooter with Magic
ii.
What you will work towards producing
I will work towards producing tech demo for a first-person game where you play as a mage. An
experiment has gone wrong and a portal was opened, letting demons into your world. One of the
main focuses will be on animation, where your characters arms will move differently depending
on the spell being casted. Fire will be casted with a click of your fingers and electricity will be
projected from your fingertips. These will be the basic spells to begin with. More will likely be
added in the future. The player must progress through the level by fighting through the demons in
the environments to reach the portal at the end. Throughout the game, the player can discover
spell books to learn new attacks and gather more information on how to close the portals. I will
begin with creating a common type of demon, with possibly more powerful demons at a later date
and bosses.
Section 2:
i.

Ideas and research sources (you must include a short list of research sources and
bibliography texts). This list can be attached as an appendix.
Ideas and inspiration comes from both Left 4 Dead and Doom. Left 4 Deads gameplay involves
hordes of zombies that are weak, but come in so many numbers that they still pose a threat. I
may also include special types of demons at a later date too, similar to the end. Doom is also a
game that inspired this idea. This game includes many demons from hell that the player needs to
fight through to reach the end of the level. Both of these games focus on gunplay, which will be
different from my idea of gameplay. Magic in games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an
inspiration for this idea, but my game will have more of a focus on the animations when casting
spells.
Section 3:
i.
Media form and technologies
I will be using Unreal Engine 4 to create my game. I have chosen this software because I do not
have much programming knowledge, and so the blueprints feature would make the programming
part much easier. I will be using Autodesk 3DS Max to create my 3D models. This is because I
have a lot of experience in using this software, and have created a character and environment
using this software previously. To create logos and textures, I may use Adobe Photoshop (for
freedom in image manipulation) and/or the Viewport Canvas tool in Autodesk 3DS Max (to apply
a texture directly onto the model using a paint brush tool).
ii.
Timescales (an action plan is essential)
-See attached Gantt chart-

Section 4:
i.

Proposed method of evaluation (how you will review your FMP in critical and analytical
ways self and peer review, tutorials, etc)
For my evaluation, I will ask fellow students in my class to play it and tell me what they think, as
well as asking my friends to play it and submitting it to a survey somewhere so that I can get a
random audience to give their feedback.
ii.
How the evidence produced relates to the assessment criteria
I believe that my idea relates to the assessment criteria because the brief is very open and allows
for any type of tech demo. I have chosen to do a game with an artist route as I believe that is my
strong point, and have almost no programming knowledge.
