Title: Machiavelli's Prince and the Politics

This course seeks to compare what is often held to be two radically different un
derstanding of human political actions and the way politics works. We will close
ly examine first Machiavelli's Prince and then the heart of Aristotle's Politics
--books 4 though 6. The emphasis on those books rather than the more traditional
ly read and discussed books is to show that Aristotle's political teaching has a
very practical dimention that is all too often forgot. And when we read that i
n the light of what Machiavelli, who is all too often seen as the Master of Mode
rn Politics, teaches students will find an Aristotle they never saw before and o
ne that very much has something to teach contemporary students of politics.
