A New System to Replace

Timesheets is Coming Soon.
Over the next few months we will be
starting to train everyone about a new
system that we have to implement
calledElectronic Visit Verification.
This system (EVV) is required by the
Connecticut Department of Social
Services in order to provide care to the
many people we care for in the
Connecticut Homecare Program for
Elders. This is basically how it will
work: when you arrive at a client you
will use their phone to call in. This will
validate the time of arrival, the clients
identity, your identity, and location.
When you are done with your
scheduled shift you will call the number
again. This time it will validate the visit
and what you did. (continued on page 2)

Quarterly Newsletter

March is
National
Nutrition
Month
Choosing wisely from a variety of
colorful fruits and vegetables,
whole grains and lean proteins will
help you and your clients
experience many benefits.
Good nutrition keeps our bodies
stronger. A proper diet can reduce
the risk of heart disease, stroke,
high blood pressure, type 2
diabetes, bone loss, cancer and
anemia. Keeping your weight in
check is also importanteating
sensibly means consuming fewer
calories.
Some research has shown that key
nutrients are essential for proper
brain function. Eating a selection
of brightl y colore d leafy
vegetables, fish and nuts packed
with omega 3 fatty acids can
improve focus and decrease the
risk for some types of dementia.
A healthy and nutritious meal
gives you more energy and makes
you look and feel better.

Long-Term Care Insurance

From time to time we really try to
keep our customers and employees
informed about funding sources for
home care. This is some information
about Long-Term Care Insurance from
David Katz & Curtis Gunn at CT
Long-Term Care Solutions Group.
Six steps to the safe, affordable
protection you need1. C o n s i d e r l o n g - t e r m c a r e
insurance when still fairly young, as
you approach your 50s.
The
younger you are the less costly it will
be over all and youre more likely to
be healthy enough to be insurable.
2. Decide if its for you. Consider it
if your preference is to remain in your
own home and dont want to risk
outliving your savings. Dont consider
it if you are or expect to be a Medicaid
participant, understand nature and
sacrifice of care giving and Medicaid
spend down requirements and are
willing to sacrifice independence and
savings.
3. Find an independent, impartial
expert to advise you. Work with
someone who specializes ONLY in
long-term care insurance and
represents multiple carriers.
4. With the expert, design the plan
thats right for your situation.
5. Dont over-insure. DONT pay
for benefits you dont really need.
6. Choose the best insurance carrier
for the plan you want.

Excerpt from a clients letter to
caregiverDear Jane {Josiah}- On behalf of Elva
and our family we wanted to thank you
for your dedication and care for Elva
over the last years. You have been an
asset to us and we appreciate all you
have done. With much difficulty and
thought Elvas sons have decided to
make other arrangements for Elvas
care. We wanted to wish you all the
very best and prosperity in all that lies
ahead for you. You will be missed.

(Electronic Visit continued ..)

The system will first be used with
State clients and then likely
expanded to private clients as
well. It will improve efficiency
with scheduling, claims
submission, and payroll accuracy
and hopefully eliminate the need
for timesheets. We will keep you
posted as we learn more and
surely will have to meet with
everyone to do the training. The
State has indicated they will
implement this by July 1, 2016.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS

NEVER leave a stove unattended
when frying food!
DO NOT USE WATER ON A
GREASE FIRE!
The easiest way to smother a grease
fire is to cover it with a pan lid. When
you are cooking with oil have a cover/
lid (NOT GLASS LID) on the counter
before you begin to cook. Be careful
with glass lids; they can break from
the extreme heat of open flame.
Turn off source of heat
(Burner/element)
*DO NOT pour water on it.
*Let me say that again, DO NOT pour
water on it.
*Attempt to remove all oxygen from
the flame. You can cover with another
pot or baking pan.
*If you cannot cover it, dump baking
soda (lots of it) on it.
~NEVER USE FLOUR!~
*Call 9-1-1. Theres no reason to
wait. The fire department can always
go back to the station if you are able to
get the fire out without help.
