Rosa's Children
Rosa's Children
And it happens
far too often here in my country, Guatemala,
and in many other places, too.
1
2
Here's our family: I'm Roberto, I'm 17 years old,
I'm the oldest.
3
4
After many years she came home and started a
new life. That's when we all got born and
moved to the new village with other refugees
from the war.
5
6
This is what our village looks like.

Every day our mother goes to collect wood for
the fire to cook the tortillas.
9
Todos los días nuestra mamá sale para
colectar leña para cocinar las tortillas.

We never saw our mama again. Just me, I saw
her body because I'm the oldest. I won't tell you
what I saw, but I can tell you that I went crazy. I
wanted to kill whoever did that to my sweet
mama. And now we are orphans, all 5 of us.
13
Nosotros no volvimos a ver nuestra mamá otra
vez.
a mi mama linda. Y ahora somos huérfanos,
nosotros 5.
14
We never saw our mama again.
15
16
But one day our luck changed a little. A man
and a woman I'd never seen came to visit us. I
guess they had been to our village before but
I'd never met them. One of them was a lady
from another country who had heard that our
mother had been murdered and that we were 5
orphans with hardly enough to eat.
17
vinieron a visitarnos.

A man and a woman I'd never seen came to
visit us.

20
When the younger kids met her they were very,
very shy. They wouldn't even look at her face.
We needed everything.
21
Cuando los niños la conocieron estaban muy,
muy tímidos. No querían mirarla en la cara.
Necesitábamos todo.
22
We picked out the best stuff.
23
24
After that we went to eat ice cream. I had a
cone, but the little kids don't know you shouldn't
order a lot and they ordered sundaes.
25
debe pedir tanto y pidieron Saritas.

The Maya spiritual guide held it over the fire so
the smoke would call to her spirit.

The Maya spiritual guide held it over the fire so
the smoke would call to her spirit. Once her
spirit had arrived we reassured her that we
would be okay, someone would take care of us,
and she could go in peace.

Llevamos la única fotografía que tenemos de
nuestra mama. Allí esta vestido en su mejor
traje.

They seemed happy running around playing a
game in between the graves.

32
Afterwards, we went shopping again. This time
we bought 2 pairs of shoes for the kids. I helped
pick them out and tried to make sure they fit.
33
quedaran bien.
34
All of a sudden it was time to say goodbye.
