Jennifer Leith, Executive Director

P.O. Box 1437
Philadelphia, PA 19105
Dear Ms. Leith,
PHILADANCO! is a dance company that is known for our innovation and focus on
African American traditions and culture. We are proud to be known as one of the leading dance
companies in Philadelphia with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. PHILADANCO strives
to present the highest quality of professional dance performance as well as serve our community
through a variety of educational programs and services.
Recently, we conceptualized a program designed to serve the low-income families who
live within our communities. This program is called the Community Dance Program as we are
expecting to launch in May 2016. Due to the nature of our program, we will be required to
transport several of our professional dance educators to the program site at Marshall Square
Apartment Complex in West Philadelphia on a weekly basis. To do this, we are submitting this
grant proposal to request funding in the amount of $5,000 to assist in the cost of transporting our
beloved dance instructors to and from the program site.
The dance instructors are a crucial aspect of the Community Dance Program as they are
the individuals who will be conducting the program weekly. We currently do not have the excess
funds to provide expense checks for our instructors for each trip they make, so we are hoping to
receive funding to cover these costs.
We appreciate your time and consideration for our request for funding. Enclosed is our
completed grant application along with the required attachments. If you need any additional
information or have any questions, please contact me directly at (570) xxx-xxxx.
Sincerely,

Jackilyn Yamialkowski

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
3. Mission of Organization:
The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) is a nonprofit organization that
presents the highest quality of professional dance performance and improves the skills of
emerging and professional dancers and choreographers in a nurturing environment, while
increasing the appreciation of dance among its many communities. Across the nation and
around the world, PHILADANCO is celebrated for its innovation, creativity and
preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance.
4. Describe how your organization or project provides educational opportunities for
communities/youth.
The Community Dance Program has been developed to provide low-income youth with
opportunities to learn dance. Children between the ages of six and twelve years old will
be able to participate in weekly dance classes taught by our esteemed, professional
company dance members. Classes will be taught free of charge so that families do not
have more financial stress put on them. Children in the Community Dance Program will
not only get to learn dance technique from professional dancers, but they will build
confidence, expand their creativity, and learn the importance of hard work and
determination.
5. Brief Summary of Grant Request:
PHILADANCO is requesting a grant in the amount of $5,000 to assist in the covering the
costs of transportation for our dance teachers. The Community Dance Program will be
held at the Marshall Square Apartment Complex so that the families do not have to
arrange transportation for their children; however, we will be required to transport our
dance teachers to Marshall Square Apartment Complex for the program. Transportation
costs are quite high, and PHILADANCO cannot afford to cover the costs once a week for
an entire year for multiple teachers, therefore we have decided it would be more cost
effective to use our organizations van to transport the teachers to and from the location.
6. What positive change do you expect to result from your program or project?
We expect that through the Community Dance Program, at least 100 children within
Philadelphias poorest communities will learn the joys and passion that dance can evoke.
We hope that the children we serve through the Community Dance Program will use the
arts, specifically dance, to channel their emotions and travel down a life path that leads to
productivity, creativity, open-mindedness, and professionalism. Our hope is that the
children we serve will learn the difference between right and wrong and will choose to
use dance as an outlet in their lives.
PROPOSAL NARRATIVE

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1970, PHILADANCO has a legacy of breaking barriers and building bridges
across cultural divides, consistently performing for audiences representing an amalgamation of
people from diverse communities. PHILADANCO is recognized for its artistic integrity,
superbly trained dancers and electrifying performances. Inherent in our mission is a commitment
to empowering youth with crucial leadership and development skills that facilitate achievement
and success in the world of dance and everyday life.
Created out of a need to provide opportunities for Black dancers, who were then
systematically denied entrance in many local dance schools, PHILADANCO has since grown
into a professional dance company that is recognized across the nation and around the world for
its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers and electrifying performances. Established on
principles of providing opportunity, inclusion and hope, PHILADANCO bridges cultural divides
and consistently performs for sold-out audiences representing an amalgamation of people from
diverse ethnicities and communities.

styles taught by internationally renowned instructors.

well-disciplined dancers with ideals and goals of professionalism.

Service Statistics
Many of PHILADANCOs programs serve individuals who have an interest in the arts,
specifically dance, who are seeking to broaden their knowledge of dance. We serve many
children at after-school programs and community events as well as teach students through our
various educational programs. We conduct our programs year-round so that we can offer our
quality and professional services to as many dance enthusiasts and learners as possible.
Organizational Strengths
PHILADANCO prides itself on our ability to create innovative, ground-breaking work
that builds bridges across cultural divides and is built upon strong traditions of the African
American culture. We also offer many programs and services that provide opportunities for lowincome families
Recent accomplishments
PHILADANCO is a company representing a history of "first" accomplishments. Building
on this company tradition, PHILADANCO founded the International Association of Blacks in
Dance (IABD), which addresses the special needs of the African American dance community in
a supportive environment, and produces an annual conference.
Recently, PHILADANCO has received press for our resonating performance, Having
Our Say The Voices of Women Choreographers that debuted April 17th through the 19th at the
Kimmel Center. This production featured work from several Black women choreographers and
was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Also, PHILADANCO is currently celebrating our 45th anniversary. Our Executive

Director and founder, Joan Myers Brown, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University
of Pennsylvania on May 18. Brown estimates that approximately 4,500 dancers have come
through the company since it was founded in 1970. She states, I tell everybody Im celebrating
100 years, because my school is 55 years old, and the company is 45 years, so thats 100 years of
dance Ive been providing for Philadelphia, said Brown, whose proudest accomplishment is the
large number of youngsters that she has influenced and set on the path to rewarding careers. In
the process, she has passed the torch to the next generation of artists and dance educators, stating
that eight of her former students now have dance schools in Philadelphia.
Unmet needs
Funding for salaries, infrastructure and capacity building have always been the most
challenging for PHILADANCO. Supporters have a preference for investing their contributions in
projects and program areas such as "new works," "community outreach," "production," "social
services" and "education." To meet these challenges, PHILADANCO is seeking to increase its
support base in the areas of administrative, artistic and fiscal programming.
