It covers the 20-inch, 2, 3, 4, 454, 5/4 and 7 foot sizes. ‘The 20-inch’ Cone differs slightly from the construction of the other size Standard Cone Crushers in that the eccentric gear is mounted at the center of the eccentric instead of at the top and that it has two outer eccentric bush- ings, one below and one above the eccentric gear, INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORDERING REPAIR PARTS* To avoid delay, and the possibility of incor- rect pats being furnished, the following infor mation should be given: 1, Serial number of the Crusher, This will be found stamped on the name plate of the Crusher, also on the cover of the specifications furnished with the machine. 2, Name and part number taken from the blueprinted parts list furnished with the Crusher. This list is correct for that par sicular machine for which it was iested ‘The identification numbers used for this Instruction Book were arbitrarily selected to cover all sizes of Standard Crushers, and are listed on the insert sheet at the back of this book. 3. Quantity of each part ordered 4. Complete shipping instructions. Advise whether shipment is desired by mail, ex- press or freight. - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Every Symons Standard Cone Crusher is completely assembled and is given a test run before shipment. Like any piece of machinery, however, certain precautions must be taken in its installation, operation and maintenance, which, if followed, will eliminate the minor troubles that sometimes arise because of im proper erection and care. By following the in- structions, such troubles can often be prevented or the difficulty easily solved. This Instruc- tion Book has, therefore, been prepared as an aid to the users and those entrusted with the care of Symons Standard Cone Crushers 1,_ Foundation ‘The Crusher should be placed on a substan- tial foundation carried down to hardpan, oF until firm bearing soil is reached. This should be of the size and construction as given on the foundation blueprints furnished for the Crush- ex. Local conditions sometimes prevent the use of a foundation of this construction, in which case the problem should be submitted to the Company for suggestions. Care should be taken to provide clearance at the top for the removal of the shaft and head, and st the aide, for the countershaft. Tt is also desirable to 3 place the Crusher in such a position that it can be serviced by an overhead crane, or other means for lifting out the parts when replacing manganese, or repairing the Crusher, ‘The foundation should be rigid and level. The latter is especially important with crush- ems equipped with water seal, If the Crusher is not set level, proper level of water in the cavity in the socket cannot be maintained, neither can proper action of the baile sealing ring in the water be secured. 2. Feed Arrangement ‘Each Cone Crusher is regularly furnished with a feed platform on which the customer may mount the feed box, together with the feed chute, or hopper, a8 the ease may be. The construction should be such as to permit the ready removal of these parts in order to with- draw the head and shaft. Proper arrangement of feed is often a factor in the successful opera- tion of the Crucher. Further information on this subject is given on Pages 8 and 9. A scalping screen ahead of the Crusher is rec- ommended when the feed contains wet, sticky or fine materials which may cause packing and undesirable spring action. 3. Discharge Arrangement ‘Since the arrangement of the discharge va- ries with each installation, no discharge spout is furnished with the Crusher. This, however, should be constructed as shown on the founda: tion blueprint. The slope of the discharge spout should not be less than 45°, but if the material it very sticky, the angle should be in- creased, Provide sufficient clearance beneath the main frame hub and spout, This will pre- vent material from building up on the spout, clogging the discharge and causing it to build up under the head, Frouble ean be avoided by raking the spout of sufficient dimensions and Of a design which permite a free and unim- peded discharge of crushed material. A free Gischarge is essential. Avoid any type of con struction which would allow motertal to Build up under the Crusher and cause serious tovble fe the machine. 4. Selection of Proper Liners Cone Crushers are furnished with several types of liners, the proper selection of which is dependent upon the size of the feed and the product desired. The Company should be consulted when any radical change in the size of feed to the machine is contemplated. Oper ating continuously with a liner and crushing cavity unsuited for the feed results in uneco- nomical wear of manganese steel and poor crushing efficiency. Our engineers are anxious to be of every assistance in recommending the proper liners for your particular service, “NOTE—Set insert at back of book for identification of part numbering, 5. Drawings Furnished ‘The following specife drwings and data of your particular crusher are furnished: a. General Crusher Assembly Drawing. Enlarged detail illustrating the head seal- ing arrangement. General ‘The 20-inch, 2, 3, 4 and 434 foot sizes for domestic shipment are usually shipped as a unit, ready to be set on the foundation. The 5% and 7 foot sizes are dismantled, as are sometimes the smaller sizes for export ment, or for domestic shipment where spe: instructions have been issued. Before putting any part in place, see that the protective coat ing applied for shipment is removed, all parts clean and free from grit and dust, oil pessages and pipes free and clean, and thet ell machined faces and screw threads that may have become damaged in shipment are in, proper condition for assembly. 7. Weights of Parts In Table 1 are given the weights of the heaviest pieces which must be handled when erecting or dismantling. 8. Main Frame “With the exception of the 20-inch and 2 foot sizes, there are four lifting loops at the bot- tom flange for attaching the slings. The 20- inch and 2 foot sizes may be lifted by the ‘bosses at the top of the frame. Place the main frame on the foundation, level it in all directions, see that there is ample clearance in the foundation recess for the gountershaf, piping, et¢, Then grout and bolt in place. Put the saddle shaped arm guards (@5) in position, If the Crusher is supplied with air or water seal type of socket, see spe- cial instructions on Pages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. 9. Countershait Unit “Where this has been removed for shipment, the saddle shaped countershaft box guard (55) should be put in place and the countershaft unit bolted into position. The pinion end of the countershaft box has a snag fit in the frame, A gasket ie used for the inner St be- tween frame and countershaft box to prevent oil leakage at this point. This gasket is 1/32" in thickness and, if replaced, a gasket of the same thickness should be used in order to maintain ‘proper tooth clearance of the gear and pinion, With the countershaft box up tight, a clear- ance space will still be found between the inner face of the outside flange and the main frame. No attempt should be made to close this as it is provided to assure a tight Ait of the inner countershait box flange. If the Crusher is equipped with a pulley, this should not be applied until the Ol piping is completed, (See important note inside front cover for correct mounting of drive. pulley, hs wiley ext asc vee flue i Ses aoe Where direct motor drive with coupling is used, a set collar is provided to take care of the end movement of the countershaft, For Instructions pertaining to the installation of countershaft bushings, see page 27. Thrust Bearing ‘Two methods are employed in the assembly of the thrust bearing, depending on whether the Crusher is the old or the new type. With the older machines, this bearing is inserted and withdrawn as a unit, long eyebotts being pro- sd for this purpose. The four plates should be oiled, assembled in their relative positions, and lowered into place. First make sure that all surfaces are smooth and free from hendling bruises. The positions of the plates from bot tom to top are, bronze (32), steel (31), bronze (30) and steel (29), On the newer models, the three lower plates should be lowered, as mentioned above, while the upper plate should be bolted to the bottom of the eccentric, as shown in Figure 1, and Jowered into place with the eccentric. To hold this plate in position, a long bolt and bar are supplied. This bolt is inserted through the opening of the inner eccentric bushing. The Tower end is threaded for screwing into the Plate and held securely by a bar placed across the eccentric at the top. After the eccentric is lowered into place, the bolt and bar are re- moved. When putting the bolt in place for lowering, care should be taken that it does not project beyond the lower surface of the upper bearing plate, ll. Eccentric ‘The eccentric can now be lowered into place, eyctolts being supplied for this purpese.. The hole in the bottom of the eccentric should en- gage the drive pin in the top plate of the thrust beating. Care should be taken that the gears are correctly meshed, having about 1/16” back- lash for the 5% and 7 foot, 3/64” for the 4 and 494 foot, and 1/32” for the 20-inch, 2 and 3 foot, measured when the counterweight in the gear is directly over the pinion and tested for back lash in different positions, If there is not suf ficient backlash, metal shims should be in- serted UNDER the bottom plate of the thrust bearing, thereby raising the eccentric gear. Avoid bottoming of gear teeth, providing at least 44” clearance at the bottom of the teeth, regardless of the wear on the teeth, If it is necessary to replace the counter- weight in the gear, do not use any material other than lead, : 12. Socket (For Crushors with Keyed Socket) Next, the socket (23) may be put in, care being taken to have the dat portion in line Figure 1. Eccentric with upper thrust bearing plate bolied in place for lowering inte positions with the key in the recess of the frame. This should be a drive fit, using a heavy steel bar and striking the socket directly over the ft For the 7 foot size, it is difficult to strike the socket at this point and it is customary to strike on the upper portion, or on a heavy steel bar placed across the top of the socket. When putting in the socket, the socket liner (19) Should either be removed or special precau- Sous taken to prevent damage to its bearing With Crushers regularly furnished with air type sockets, felt packing tings are inserted in the recess on the underside of the flange of the socket to provide 2 seal against air or oil leak age between socket and frame; also in the re- cess between the socket and sealing ring, see Figure 8, Page 12. Eyebolts are regularly furnished for han- dling the sockets. 12-A. Bolted Socket Next, the socket (23) may be put in, care being takea to see that all holes in the socket line Up with the tapped holes in the main frame (24) before inserting the cap screws. Note that one hole is offset to insure correct assem- bly. As this socket (23) has 2 drive fit in the main frame (24), special care should be taken in forcing the socket to its seat in the frame, by tightening the cap screws (116) evenly all around, to prevent binding. The socket (23) for the ft. crusher only must seat on the inside machined shoulder of the main frame (24) with clearance under the socket (23) outside flange. All other sockets Seat under the outer socket flange on top of Inside eccentric bearing part of the main frame GH. ‘The cap screws fastening the socket (23) to the main frame (24) are of the Allen Heed type and a special T wrench (119) is supplied for use with them, See Figure No. 2d. ‘With crushers regularly furnishee with air type socket assembliss, felt packing rings are inserted in the recess on the inside of the flange of the air sealing ring (20) to provide a seal against air or oil leakage between the socket (23) and the air sealing ring (20) as shown in Figure 2a. Bye bolts are regularly furnished for han- dling the sockets. Usually four of the regular ‘Allen, Head cap screws (116), holding down the socket (23), are used as jack screws for extracting the socket from the main frame (24), in four tapped holes provided for in the ‘socket (23). See Figure 2e, These tapped holes should be filled with waste, satu- rated with oil or grease after using, for pre- vention of dirt plugging or corrosion, See Figure 162, 7 Special 14” Allen Head jack screws are fur- nished for the 3 crusher socket (23) and four special hexagon head cap screws are furnished for the removal of 7’ crusher sockets. See Figure Ze. 13, Socket Sealing Ring (For Crushers with Keyed Socket) (For Water Seal, Soe Pages 12, 19, 14, 15. 16, 17, 18 and 18) ‘The sealing ring springs and housings (51), which are used in all but the water seal type, should be well greased and inserted in the holes in the top of the socket flanges. The sealing ring (20) may then be set in place with the, se portion in line with the Key in the socket, Later type sealing rings have three keys which fit on three fats on the circumference of the socket, In case the sealing ring be- ‘comes loose, place shims of required thickness behind the keys in sealing ring until a sliding fit is obtained on the socket, making sure that the springs are still able to function against the sealing ring. Aa the ting is foreed down over there shims, they spring it slightly out of round and for a distance in between the shims pull the ring in against the socket, thus provid- hg a sliding ft between these parts. Before dropping the ring ia place, examine the spher~ feal eurfaces to see that they have not been éamaged in any way. 13-A. Socket Sealing Ring (Fer Crushors with Bolted Socket) “The sealing ring epcings and housings (51), whieh are used in all but the water seal type, Should be well greased. and ineerted in. the oles in the top of the socket fanges. See sec- tion at left in Figure 2a. The sealing ring (20) may then be set in place with the slotted por- tion in line with the key (117) in the socket. ‘The sealing rings have three keys (117) which fit freely in three slots or guides on the circumference of the socket. Careful inspection should also be made to see that the sealing ring (20) is free on its center bore, that no binding of the felt seal fs evident, and free movement of the springs. (51) possible. Before cropping the sealing ring (20) in place, examine the spherical surfaces to see that they have not been damaged in any way. Eye bolts or cast lugs for rope slings are provided for lifting out the air sealing ring, tapped holes in the ring being provided tor the eye bolts, These tapped holes should be filed with waste, satursted in oil or grease, alter using. See Figure 2c. 14. Main Shaft and Head (For Water Seal, See Pages 12, 19, 4, 15, 16,17, 18 and 19) * The shaft and head, aiter being thoroughly cleaned and the oil passages examined, can now be inserted, This unit is lifted by means of the heavy eye bolt screwed into the end of the shaft. Carelully remove all bruises, rust and ouch spots which may have occurred in han- dling, Before being put into place, however, thoroughly coat the shaft and spherical sur- faces on the underside of the head with lubri- cating 15. Bowl Assembly Since this is shipped completely assembled, it can be put in as a unit. The threads in the adjusting ring (12) and on the bow! should be thoroughly cleaned and rubbed down with cloth impregnated with molybdenum disul- phide powder. The threads should then be coated with grease, preferably grease mixed with 5-10% (by vollime) of molyBdenum disul- phide powder. Occasionally force some of this mixture into the threads with a grease gun through the grease nipples provided for thie purpose. Lift the bowl into position. Screw it down to its approximate location, but not far enough for the head to strike the bowl, Never screw the owl down so close to the head that the man- ganese bumps. This may cause the manganese fo warp. eedestad URE 24 ‘The feed hopper cone (9) can then be ine serted, which, in the 20-inch, 2, 3, 4 and 434 fo0t sizes, is Of steel plate construction, rest- ing on wood blocks. For the larger sizes, 51% and 7 foot, manganese steel liner segments eld down by a steel ring bolted to the bowl apron are used. 16. Feed Plate and Platform Bolt on the feed plate (5) after the main shaft lock plug (35) and filler Llocke (34) are in place. The filler block (34) ehould be thick enough to be squeezed tightly against the lock plug by the feed plate, to prevent looseness and wear at this point, ‘The cavity in the top of the shaft shouldbe well packed with grease to prevent dust from geting in and workin down around the threads of the main shel Special attention should be taken to draw up tightly and securely lock the feed plate bolts The feed platform (1) can next be set on and fastened in position, 17. Arrangement of Feed Sotistactory erusher performence is often dependent upon the arrangement of the feed and is a motter of such importance that it should not be overlooked. On all Crushers shipped, a feed platform and feed spout with correct size of openings are provided. On some Crushers in use, the feed Platform has been removed and in some in- stances the feed spout has been cut away and the opening in the platform enlarged. In some instances this has led to unsatistactory per formance and it is recommended that the feed platform with proper size feed spout be used, unless otherwise indicated. ‘The plationm eos be adjusted vertically by means of the sleeve adjusting nuts (3) to control the feed. The material should be caused to iall vertically through the spout upon the feed plate (5) which distributes the material evenly around the crushing cavity. When a Crusher is fed small material of more or less uniform size, the feed spout readily regulates the feed. On the other hand, if the feed consists of large slebby pieces, the feed spout must be adjusted #0 that the atone on the feed plate will be dise charged freely and not become jammed be. Reath the feed spout. The feed should be reg. ulated so that the crushing cavity will not be entirely filled and the stone will not build up under the feed plate. It ls very Important that the feed be evenly distributed oround the crushing cavity. If the feed is to one side, there is liable to be con. Siderable oversize material in the product In Figure 3. Correct Feed Box. Note the material falls on the feed, plate properly, Results of Even Distribution: 1. Maximum capacity, 2, Unitorm product, 3. Minimum spring action, 4. Minimum bearing pressures, 5. Minimum power consumption Figure 4. Incorrect Feed Box, Here the incoming ‘material passes through one side of the ‘opening, causing uneven distribution, Results of Uneven Distributio: 1. Reduced capacity. 2. Oversize product Excessive spring action, Maximum Bearing pressure. Maximum power consumption, Figures 3 and 4, the correct and incorrect methods of feed box construction are shown. On large Crushers, where the feed often con- tains peces of large size, these may “bridge” the opening and clog the feed, To prevent this, the type of box shown in Figure 5 is rec~ ommended. This has a ‘“U" shaped plate fitted to the edge of the opening for half of its cir- ‘cumference, which prevents picces catching on. opposite sides and eliminates the possibility of “bridging” over them. Figure §, Non-bridging Feed Box for larger Crushers 18, Oil Tank and‘ Piping Before connecting the oil supply system, re- fer to the two blueprints farnihed with the Crusher: “Piping and Tank Layout” showing the arrangement of the piping between the oll pump and storage tank, and “Crusher Drain and Feed Pipe” showing the connection to the jump. For larger sized Crushers which have Independent motor driven pumps, see blue- print furnished with the Crusher for piping arrangement. See Figure 7. When an independent motor driven oil pump is used, the electric circuit should be so inter- connected that the crusher motor cannot be started until the oil pump motor is running. ‘The pump mounted on the countershaft box and driven from the countershaft, together With the large oil tank, is furnished se regular equipment on Crushers of 4% foot size and smaller. No feed and drain pipes are furnished between the pump and tank. The tank may be placed in any convenient location near the Crusher and at a level that will permit the return inlet in the tank to be below the return outlet of the Crusher, a distance equal to 12” for every horizontal 10 ft. of drain pipe used. This will give sufficient fall for the oil to flow back freely. Under ao circumstances should the distance between the top of the tank and the conter line of the pump be more than ten feet. This is the maximum safe lift of the pump and, if increased, may cause faulty pamp action, especially after the pump parts have become worn, Follow the instructions con- tained in the blueprint showing “Piping and Tanke Layout” When piping up the oiling system, do not use old or rusty pipe. Make certain’ that no scale, clips, or other abrasive substances enter the system. tls Important that suction ond delivery pipes at the pump be coupled with due regard othe direction of rotetlon of the Cruste The arrangement of the piping Figure 6, also in blueprint “Crusher Drain and Feed Pipe.” Both blueprints are furnished with the Crusher. Before shipment an arrow is painted on the pump cover, or countershaft box, indicating the direction of rotation of the countershatt for which the pump Is connected. If the di- rection is to be reversed, the piping must be changed accordingly. ping is so arranged that this change iy be made, care being taken that all joints are made tight or the pump may not fnetion properly. Avoid long leads of pipe to and from the oll sight feed gauge. The sight feed should be raised at least 2 ft. above the feed plate. Tt Should be so cet that the oil stream it readily visible, The gauge glass should also be pro- tected against ying rock and breakage, For the 5% and 7 foot Crushers, the oil tanks are equipped with water coils for main- taining a proper oil temperature. This cooling system should be connected to the water sup: FLOW SIGH? SHOULD 4€ LOCATED Aout I Ft atove FesD LATE FLow sicut suanisuto a RAING SHOWN IN DorTED UNes TONE FURNISHED. Air can be supplied from an existing high pressure air system through 2 reducing valve, but if this ie not available, an independent supply can be had from a small motor-driven, low pressure blower, The intake of this blower should be so located, or an air filter provided, to assure air being de- livered that is iree from injurious dust. In Table 2 are given the air requirements and fessures required when using the air seal type socket, 19.A. Special Instructions for Crushers Equipped With The Air Pressure Type Socket Sealing Assembly (For Crushers with Bolied Socket) All 2, 3, 4, 41%, 5% and 7 foot Crushers, as now built, can be provided with a type of socket (23) which takes a supply of low pres- sure air between the outer and inner sealing rings. ‘This has the effect of preventing oil from leaking out past the inner sealing ring, and dust from getting in past the outer sealing ring, When installing air to the Crusher equipped with air type socket, refer to right hand section in Figure 22. Presuming that the Crusher has been properly erected, the air con- nection should be made through the nipple or elbow welded to the plate below the socket at the air manifold in the main frame (24). Piping from the Crusher should follow beneath the arms to be out of the path of falling ma- terial. See the blueprint of the piping fur- nished with Crusher and use this as a guide, Air can be supplied from an existing high pressure air system through a reducing valve, but if this is not available, an independent supply can be had from a small motor-driven, low pressure blower. The intake of this blower should be so located, or an air filter provided, to assure air being delivered that is free from injurious dust, In Table 2 are given the air requirements and pressures required, Size of Crusher 2 Ft. 3 Ft am | mr | sare [7m | Cu, Ft, Free A tH Ber Minute Requized 300, 100 150 150 170 170. ‘Air Pressure “About one pound per aquare inch, 20. Water Seal Application ‘The water seal type arrangement can be ap- plied to all sizes of Crushers, Its use is recom- mended when crushing abrasive or dusty ma- terial. Two types of water supply -may be used. Figure 11 shows the piping from a contin ous supply. The supply line is equipped wit 2 drain valve, the function of which is to drain the Crusher when not ranning and avoid treez- ing fn the water seal in cold sweather. Figure 12 is used where the supply of water is limited and includes a baffled setiling tank. In freezing weather, antifreeze solution oF a light grade of fuel oil must be used to keep the system open. Water used in either system should be fairly clean, free from foreign mat- ter and excessive sediment. When through for the crushing season, or before any long shutdown period, drain’ all water from the socket, It is else advisable to Femove the head and fil the inner water cham- ber with a light grade of oil to prevent the water inlet porte from rusting and clogging. The quantity of water in “Gallons Per Mir ute," as given in tables with Figures 11 and 12, should be maintained in order to be assured of proper operation of the water seal. After the Piping is installed, a test should be made to determine if the amount actually discharged conforms to that given in the tables for the various sized crushers. To make this test, the Gischarge shoitld be run into a container and the water measured for a timed period See Figures 9 and 10 for inlet and outlet con- nections and details. Care should be taken in connecting the suppiy and discharge piping to the proper manifold, When using the tank system, sediment at bettom of tank back of baffle should be remaved ocessionally, 21, Water Seal Arrangement (important Instructions for Aasombling end Removing Heed) (For Crushers with Keyed Type Sockets) Figures 13 and 14 show the correct and in- correct ways for lowering the head and shaft into a Crusher equipped with water seal, When assembling the water seal type of head in the Crusher, note the position of the shaft to pre- vent damage to the head seal baffle (113). The head and shaft should be tilted to the thick side of the eccentric, or toward the balance weight side of the eccentric gear. When renewing the rubber skirt on the water seal socket, provide 1/16” clearance between the rubber shire of the head sealing baffle. This clearance will counteract any tendency toward a pumping action which may occur when the ubber skirt contacts the head sealing beffle See illustrations, Figures 9 and 10. WATER Do not allow the water level in the over- flow trough to become too high, This may be caused by an excess of water being supplied to the seal, or by the discharge pipe not drain- ing freely ‘due to it being frozen or partially clogged.
