CHALLENGES OF

TECHNOLOGY IN
EDUCATION

PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
Key among all challenges is the lack of
adequate, ongoing professional
development for teachers who are
required to integrate new technologies into
their classrooms yet who are unprepared
or unable to understand new technologies

For professors and teachers to stay

abreast with technology, they may need to
be retrained.

RESISTANCE TO CHANGE
Resistance to technology comes in many
forms, but one of the key resistance
challenges identified is comfort with the
status quo

Those who have been teaching all their

lives using traditional methods may not be
very susceptible to the changes being
applied.

TECHNOLOGY MISUSE
One of the biggest mistakes made when
integrating technology in schools is that
the technology ends up being used for
researching

DIGITAL DIVIDE
Is the gap between two societies of people
who have access to modern information
technology, and those who dont or have
restricted access

ECONOMICAL
SOCIAL

GEOGRAPHICAL
Access to the world of information is also
dependent on where you live.

TECHNOLOGICAL
Access to the internet is highly limited in
remote areas, and relatively poor
infrastructure in developing countries such
as supply of electricity makes this worse

ECONOMICAL
Some countries are too poor to be able to
build the communications
infrastructure needed to allow homes
and businesses to connect to the Internet.

SOCIAL

age
gender
family structure
education
motivation

Computers in education
disable us because:

EFFECTIVE TEACHING ALL BUT

DISAPPEARS
Good teaching requires a personal connection

STUDENTS RISK BECOMING

ANTISOCIAL
Too many of todays youngsters can surf the
internet, but are unable to form personal
connections

COMPUTERS ARE A HEALTH RISK

Computer use is associated with increased
eyestrain, repetitive motion injury, and obesity
that comes from a sedentary lifestyle

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS ARE SIDELINED

As spelling and grammar tools correct student
writing and computer screens replace
engagement with books, real learning is
compromised

QUOTE
Technology wont replace teachers..

But teachers who use technology will

probably replace teachers who do not.
