Homeostasis
LO Define homeostasis and explain how we
maintain a constant body temperature.

Starter: Watch this video >

Key Words
Homeostasis

Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal
environment.
Write this down

What is Homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the
maintenance of a constant
internal environment

Homeostasis makes sure our body has

the correct levels of.......
Temperature

Water

Carbon dioxide

Oxygen
Blood sugar

Homeostasis
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is keeping levels the same.
In order for our tissues and cells to function
properly, the internal conditions of the body
must be kept constant.
Temperature

To know how the body regulates its temperature.

Function of skin
1.Protects us from
infection .
2. Keeps our body at the
right temperature.
3. Covered in receptors
so we can feel things.

Lets take a closer

look at the skin.......

Too low- hyporthermia

To know how the body regulates its temperature.

Humans live in a variety of temperatures.
Like all mammals, humans are endotherms (warm blooded).
Human body temperature must remain around 37C.

Bodies try to
maintain 37
degrees as this is
the optimum
conditions for
enzymes.

On a hot day the skin

1. Vasodilation of Blood vessels.

Capillaries get wider so a Larger amount of blood
can flow near the skin surface. Heat is lost to the
environment.
2. Evaporation of sweat
Sweat is produced from the
sweat glands. Sweat
evaporates from the skin.
3. Hairs and hair erector
muscles are relaxed.
4. No shivering

To know how the body regulates its temperature.

On a cold day
1. Vasoconstriction of Blood vessels.
Capillaries get smaller so a Larger amount of blood
can flow near the skin surface. Heat is kept near to
the body.
2. No sweat is produced.
3. Body starts to shiver
to produce heat for the
body.
4. Hairs and hair erector
muscles stand on end to
trap a layer of air.

The hypothalamus
receives nerve
impulses from heat
and cold
thermoreceptors in
the skin.
There are also
receptors in the
hypothalamus- called
central
thermoreceptors.

These detect changes in

blood temperature.

Thermo-regulatory centre in the brain

Responds to information
Sends appropriate nerve impulses to
effectors
These trigger corrective feedback
mechanisms
Return body temperature to normal
level (set point)

What happens when you get hot or cold?

If you become too hot or too cold, there
are several ways in which your temperature
can be controlled. They involve sweating,
shivering, skin capillaries and hairs.

Negative Feedback
Its the way in which homeostasis is achieved.
A change sets of a response that cancels out the change.
It is a self regulatory system that ensures that changes are reversed and
returned back to the normal level to maintain conditions at particular levels.
