ABSTRACT
During the construction processes different softwares are opted for different
purposes, every software has its own pros and cons. Although in India
people still rely on using papers and pens for calculations, softwares are
4

easiest way to confirm your answers. For designing and analysis purpose
STAAD-PRO V8i is used, basically software was designed by 4 Indian
engineers but BENTLEY bought it and now the owner of STAAD pro is
BENTLEY. This software is used through out the world as it has most
countries Standard Building Codes.
Different loading criteria are added by Bentley, which serves help for
combinations of worst cases. Also file can be exported for its foundation
designing, Foundation software is also designed by BENTLEY. It has
functions for Isolated, raft, pile, etc.
Offshore structures can also be developed using Bentleys offshore
structures.
For an architect or construction engineer it is important to have a
model to demonstrate to clients, hence rendering software are important.
SKETCHUP 2014 by GOOGLE has its own place in rendering world. It
has its own options that make it different. It is user friendly and has material
browser.
When architect think about an extra-ordinary design, it is well planned
in his own mind, but for convincing his thoughts to others, he uses paper,
pencils, but many times it is difficult to draw sections, elevations,
axonometric views, hence now a days softwares are used by many of
designers
Key word: Staad pro V8i, Sketchup 2014, Design using software

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
In 21st century we are relying more and more on computers, it is
definitely also creating its impact on civil engineering field. As structures
5

are becoming complex and large everyday, it is very hectic for calculations
and drawing hence engineers are using softwares now a days

1.1ABOUT SEMINAR
In this seminar, first few pages are dedicated to introduction to softwares,
Methods of their applications are stated. Both STAAD-PRO and
SKETCHUP are thoroughly discussed. Directions are given for use of both
softwares

1.2 OBJECTIVES
1.Get familiar with softwares for civil engineer
2.Get introduced to STAAD-PRO
3. Get introduced to SKETCHUP

1.3 NEED OF STUDY

STAAD PRO

Every country has defined Standard codes for construction

and inspection of structures, including sub-structure, offshore
structures, super-structures, etc. Every engineer believes in his
knowledge and hence does all calculations by himself. Starting
from footing up to parapet wall. For small structure ( 2/3 storey
apartments) it is easy to calculate all required measures. But for
calculations of massive structures like Dams, Skyscrapers, it is
very difficult to perform calculations by hand. And again for
analysis and cross checking purpose it is time consuming.
Hence people developed softwares running on PC,Mac,etc.
which are capable to do all complex and time consuming
6

calculations within less time. Many softwares like STAAD-PRO

V8i , SAP 16,etc. are currently in the market which are analysis
and design software. Although there are some pros and cons of
each software, it is now in developing phase.
Many countries directly rely on results obtained from
software. But in India, People still calculate by hand and for
cross checking purpose softwares are utilized.

SKETCHUP 2014(Mac platform)

To develop working model file based on assumptions, rendering software is
needed to create different views using day/night effects, sun rays effects,
different light effects, etc. SKETCHUP is useful software for rendering.
It has different commands as,
0 1.Push/Pull
1 2.Offset
7

2 3.Line
3 4.Rectangle
4 5.Material browser, etc.
One can Import file from AutoCAD

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 INTRODUCTION

This has always been wide topic for writers, authors, and engineers.
Many books were written for tutorial purpose of these softwares. Tons of
papers are available on internet regarding this topic. Many well knows
writers as Sivakumar Naganathan, D. Trevor Jones have contributed by
writing books on STAADPRO
2.2 LINTERATURE ON STAAD-PRO
ProjectWise is an engineering project team collaboration system which is
used to help teams improve quality, reduce rework, and meet project
deadlines. One of the major pieces of functionality provided by ProjectWise
is an Integration Server which allows data to be managed and shared across
a distributed enterprise. STAAD.Pro has been enhanced so that the model
STD data file can be managed on a ProjectWise server.
Description
Four integration functionalities have been added. These are
Open a STAAD model from a ProjectWise repository.
Save a local STAAD model into a ProjectWise repository.
Update an existing model from ProjectWise.
Review model properties (meta-data) which has been opened from a
ProjectWise repository.
Note that access to all of these functionalities is available from ProjectWise
sub-menu
under the general File menu described below.

2.3 LINTERATURE ON SKETCHUP

10

SketchUp is free from Google just Google it and download to your

computer. You can do just about anything with it, but it is especially good
for conceptualization of architectural design. The current version
(November, 2010) is 8.0. These instructions are based on this version. There
is also a professional version, SketchUp Pro 8.0, that they sell online for
$495.00. Students can purchase a one year license of SketchUp Pro for
$49.00. But I would recommend downloading the free version from Google.
The major difference between free and Pro version is the ability of
SketchUp Pro to import from and export into AutoCAD. If you really want
to import AutoCAD drawings, you could download the SketchUp Pro
version for an 8 hour trial, import the AutoCAD drawing, and just not
follow through with your purchase. The earlier version, SketchUp 7.1,
allows for using a free AutoCAD import plugin that you can download from
the Google SketchUp site. However, in order to import an AutoCAD
drawing into SketchUp 7.1, you need to first save the AutoCAD drawing
down to AutoCAD 2007. The AutoCAD drawing will import into SketchUp
as a Group, which can then be exploded down to individual elements,
which, in turn, must also be exploded to be able to change them in
SketchUp. It is kind of a mess. Its really better just to redraw the drawing in
SketchUp.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
11

3.1 INTRODUCTION
Each software runs on the basis of some methodology coded by the
developers. In aid to get maximum output from a software one should know
all possible input methods.
For STAAD-PRO, first drawing is needed which can be imported
from CAD or can be drawn using beam node method, or STAAD editor.
Then Input for supports, components of structures is required and design of
each element can be obtained.
For SKETCHUP, first drawing is needed which can be imported from
CAD or can be drawn using push/pull commands. Then materials, textures
are applied. Different plugins can be downloaded from internet (VRAY, etc).

3.2 METHODOLOGY FOR STAAD-PRO

1. Draw the structure using node beam method

2.Extend nodes 0.6M below the ground floor

12

3.Create a floor using translation repeat

4. Define the material property for beam and column and apply to
13

all lines

5.Define supports at bottom (In this case fix supports are provided)

6.Define dead load (Here Self wt. is dead load)

14

7.Define Live load (Here uniformly distributed load is live load)

8.Select option for printing

15

In this way Job of input is completed, after running analysis following

results can be obtained.

While one can also use these results for designing of different
components.

16

file is saved in extension and further imported in staad foundation

Footing is designed

17

3.2 METHODOLOGY FOR SKETCHUP

18

1) Draw the outline of building

2) Draw all elements using Push/Pull, Offset , etc.

19

3) Finishing using follow me, move, etc.

4) Apply different textures and materials

20

5) To opt more precise and realistic rendering, V-ray Plugin is used

21

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

STAAD-Pro V8i
In this way methodology if using STAAD-PRO V8i is discussed
briefly with example of simple structure. After applying Dead loads, live
loads and defining the support coditions, given structure was analysed for
worst loading conditions after opting the Shear force and bending moment,
different components such as columns, beams, roof are designed using
staadpro itself.
A methodology followed for normal structures in staad pro is
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

Joint using node and beam

Define supports
Defining Load
Assigning Loads
Defining material
Printing option
Analysis
Each job is again sub divided in multiple smaller jobs which
refines the input for structure.

SKETCHUP 2014
In this way methodology if using SKETCHUP 2014 is discussed
briefly with example of simple structure. After applying all
commands, materials, given structure was designed taking asthetics into
cosideration, different components such as columns, beams, roof are designed
using sketchup 2014 itself.
