This of course, they did wit the greatest ease ‘Then sid the father: “My sons, by thisexample you all can see that as long a8 you remain united, you ate a match for all your enemies But once you marl and Decome separated, then yo! ae destroyed.” IN UNION THERE IS STRENGTH Two years ago GAUNTLET ENTERPRISES was established. At the time its sole purpose was to meet the need for fine jewelry for body and genital piercing. This it did, but as the months passed it became apparent that not ‘only was there a need for jewelry, but that there also existed a pressing need for 1) a central clearing house of in formation related to piercing and 2) some way for fans of the art to meet and correspond with one another. With the introduction of the PFI Quarterly, we hope to fulfill both ‘of these needs. This is its first issue and we wish to welcome ‘you to its readership, During the few months of preparation for this initial edition of the PFI Quarterly, many decisions have had to be made, While we wanted it to have the widest possible appeal, we soon realized it was impossible to please all of four readers all of the time, Piercing fans are not limited 10 ‘one sex of persuasion. They are both male and female, gay and bi and straight, But they all share a common interest, and it is this common bond which we wish, as much as possible, to explore within these pages. Some of the things, Yyou see ar read may not appeal to you, however, if the (Quarterly is to survive and fulfill is intended function, each and every reader must be tolerant of the needs of other fans and adopt a live-and-letlive attitude. Unity is absol- utely essential if we ate to not only see the Quarterly sueceed, but also see piercing step out of the freak show and take its place as an acceptable means of personal expression as it was in many anclent cultures and still sin many primitive ones. Unity is also necessary if we are to protect our human rights. There is at prosent an element of the American pop: ulation intent upon imposing its narrow conservative morality upon the rest of the nation. The prime target at this time is the country’s gay community. Anita Bryant first launched the campaign in Florida, and has found ‘enough lunatic supporters nationwide to set in motion an alarming crusade to deny to homosexuals the human rights afforded every American by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If this campaign succeeds the privacy of no bed: room will be safe from invasion and no one whose sexual ‘expression diviates from the norm can rest easily ‘As a piorcing fan you cannot afford to be complacent fr apathetic about this issue. It makes no difference how heterosexual you may be. To the right-wing conservatives and celigious fanatics behind this campaign, your sexual expression is sufficiently novel to make you a prime candi date for future repression. Many people shrug their shoulders and say it can't happen. Can we afford to take that risk? It has already happened in Dade County, Florida. You can help end this aggression against our Constitutional rights. Get involved in whatever way you can. If you do nothing else, register and vote, Stand united, for only in so doing ean each of us enjoy the freedom of expression Which, so long as we do not seek to force it upon others, is our human right, We would like to take this opportunity to ask our readership to take part in making the PFI Quarterly a unique and exciting reading experience. To have output, we must also have input and that must come from you our readers. Your letters, photos, articles, drawings, etc. can give much pleasure to your fellow fans. Please don’t hes itate to submit them. The Quarterly and its staff can only provide so much to fil its pages with interesting materia Please let us hear from you. We also urge you to encourage your friends to sub- scribe to the PFI Quarterly. The more subscribers we have, the better quality newsletter we can produce. What the PFI Quarterly becomes depends on YOU, JW An Interview with Doug Malloy It is the intention of the editorial staff to make WHO'S WHO a regular feature of the PFI QUARTERLY. This will give our readers the opportunity to get acquainted with some of the “celebrities” of the piercing scene. For our inaugural issue we have chosen to interview Mr. Doug Malloy. For many years he has been a champion of the jays of piercing and an inspiration to many fans. Without his continual encouragement and support neither GAUNTLET ENTERPRISES nor the PFl QUARTERLY would ever have become a reality. To start our interview off perhaps you would tell our readers what you believe to be the causes for the current revival of interest in piercing? DM | don’t know that you would be justified in calling it a revival. | doubt that the interest in piercing has ever really ceased to the point that it needed to be revived. People have been doing it for thousands of years. | do think that there are a couple of reasons why piercing is becoming more visible. One reason, of course would be the relaxation in the social strictures we've been living under from our Puritan and Victorian past. People are much more open about their sexual desires now. The other reason, believe it or not, is the new availability of jewelry made especially for piercing. During the years when it was an underground phenomenon, it was virtually impossible to find suitable insertables, What little was available was often of very shoddy workmanship. Alll that has changed now. | firmly believe that in the future we are going to see a lot of both piercing and tattooing. We are now in the Age of Aquarius. It began the moment our astronauts set foot on the moon. During the Aquarian Age man’s natural in clination toward self adornment will flourish. Tattooing and piercing will be very popular. They will be a part of a universal desire for people to express ‘their individuality and “do their own thing."” Since we are basically talking about the reasons people desire to be pierced, | would like to make one last point. In primitive societies when a child, usually a boy, reaches puberty he undergoes some form of rite of passage whereby he becomes a man. These rites usually involve some form of pain. The boy expects it and suffers it gladly. As we so-called “civilized” people have no such rites of passage, | believe many individuals find a void in their lives which the piercing experience often fills. PFIQ This leads to my next question. On several occasions you have express ed the opinion that the desire to be pierced is a subconscious hold over from a previous incarnation. Would you mind elaborating on that? DM — How else would you explain its occurance? PFIQ Doubtless the psychologists and psychiatrists could go wild coming up with all kinds of reasons — for example, injections in childhood evolv- ing into a fascination with needles. Continued next page DM This was never my case. In fact, my mother avoided any form of injection for me. She didn’t even want me to be vacinated. | never had any contact with a needle. Reincarnation is the only way you can ration- alize people's predisposition to certain things. We carry so much back. | know this is true for many men and women. It doesn’t all start in this period of time. Look at child prodigies. Though few realize it, their talent goes back to a previous incarnation. With me | still have rather vivid flashes of a previous time-too vivid to be just casual suggestion. You see, | was very highly placed in ‘the ancient Egyptian court of Akhenaton. The wearing of jewelry was a very significant and important part of that culture. It was a status symbol. | seem to have carried that desire for self adornment over into the present incarnation. PFIQ Your involvement with piercing goes back many years. Can you tell us at what age you first be- came fascinated with or, shall we say, aware of the concept of piercing? DM I could hardly have been older than two because we were still living in Chicago. We moved to Seattle when | was about three. Anyway, a lady friend ‘of my mother came to visit and she had diamond ear studs, | couldn't keep my eyes off them. It was a mys tery how they could stay there, Were they glued on or what? The earrings my mother wore had little loops with screws in the back. When | asked the lady to put them on me mother shushed me up and said, ““Keep quiet.” Of course once shushed up with a thing like that it keeps churning over and over and you've got to find the an: swer, At some point | noticed that there was something behind the ear and then I realized the mechanics in: volved. It was an intriguing method of attaching some little bauble. PFIQ When did you first turn on to, or conceive of, the idea of body and genital piercing as opposed to ear piercing? DM — 1 was in junior high—I would say thirteen, four- teen, along in there. My father had an extensive library with everybody's favorite source, the National Geographic and other books like that, the natural history books. We had a lot of those. In some of those books there were pictures of natives in India who were hooking things to their skin for festivals. They would get into a form of ecstacy by doing this. There were also pictures of the Penitentes of New Mexico and Southwest who hang from poles with skewers in their backs. Of course these were only temporary, but they fired the imagine tion on to other things. There was one issue of the Geographic about the Dyaks, the Sea Dyaks of Borneo, which showed some of their piercings, largely male. While they didn’t show the MR. DOUG MALLOY genital piercings, something in the text implied there was more than met the eye. | also found a great deal of infor: mation at the local university library. The anthropolo gical texts revealed a lot as did the medical books, not with pictures as much as with drawings. PFIQ. When did you get your first piercing? DM Toward the end of my freshman year in college, | was destined to have piercings. That's all there is to it. The opportunities just fell in my lap, I was studying marine biology at the state univer: sity. Because my professor liked me and because | was a good swimmer, he arranged for me to work with a team of shallow-water divers during the summer vacation Our job was to examine the harbor dock pilings for marine worms. Anyway, when you're spending a lot of time underwater like that it seems as if you always need to piss, which if you do, of course, you get the inside of your suit messed up and it takes days to dry out. | was in something of a quandry over what to do until one of the fellow divers, a Swede named Kurt, showed me how he had solved the problem by attaching the hose of a rubber urinal to a ring in the head of his cock, It was what we now call a Prince Albert piercing, and apparent: ly done by many Swedish divers for just this purpose. Needless to say | too, had to have one, and couldn't have been more pleased to have a legitimate excuse for getting it n Tahiti where its @ common ous Maloy had ths uiche piercing done PFIQ Would you mind telling us about some of your later piercings? DM — Not at all. | got my dydoes during my junior year in college. My roommate Jake introduced me into a group of predominantly Jewish fellows who called themselves the Cyprian Society, They would probably have been considered religious renegades as they strongly objected to the indiscriminate circumcision of males at birth. They felt they had been robbed of much of the sensitivity provided by the foreskin. To compen: sate for its loss they advocated piercing the sides of the Glands of the penis and installing small studs. How could I pass up an opportunity like that? It’s a pity that the Cyprian Society got lost in the shuffle of World War Il ‘After college | spent some time in Hawaii. | was beach bumming around and the navel piercing was con sidered part of the required image. | made friends with a guy named Moki who took me to a Chinese jewelry shop ‘on River Street in Honolulu where | had it done, | was fortunate to have the guiche piercing done in Tahiti where it is part of the culture. | was there after the war compiling anthropological material collected in During the day and for intercourse the frenum ring is worn up over the head and aroun he alone oF the pans Borneo and New Guinea. | met an Australian chap named Reggie Jones who had jumped ship in Tahiti many years before, He had married a native girl and sired seven sons. Having been there some time he knew much about the local sex lore, and when he told me about the guiche — well, [had to have one and he did the honors. Over the years I've had just about every kind of piercing that’s worth having and some not worth having. My Prince Albert was extended into an apadravya which hasn't given me much pleasure, but the frenum piercing is another story. It's great and so are my nipples. | only had them done a couple of years ago. Boy, was | missing ‘out. My last piercing was a hafada, but | had to abandon it because it never healed properly. Anyway, that's my inventory. wl [At night the frenum ring és usually Hliped doven for greater comfort. Euro jean moles fen sleep with the ring over the mide finger, Doue's aoe perener, PFIQ. Exactly which piercings would you consider functional and worth having? DM — Nipples, Prince Albert, frenum, guiche, dydoes— pretty much in that order. PFIQ Is there any advise you would give to someone who is considering piercings, but hasn't done it yet? DM Placement is very important especially with the guiche and cock piercings. Both hygine and the proper jewelry for the job are equally important, For ‘these reasons | advise the individual who wants to be pierced to find someone who knows what he is doing rather than attempt to do the job himself, Also, people into the S/M thing are best advised not to attempt per: manent piercings within the context of a scene. If you take the time to do the piercings properly you disrupt the pace of the scene. PFIQ You are leaving soon on a trip around the world and will be spending almost a month in India. Do you anticipate finding much material on piercing while you are there? DM I certainly hope so. PFIQ Would you write an article about your trip for one of the future issues of the Quarterly? DM I'd be glad to. PFIQ We will be looking forward to it. Best of luck on your trip, and thank you for talking with us. My father was born and reared in Stockholm, Sweden in the mid 1800's. While in college he fell under the influence of an Amer- ican Baptist missionary visiting the school to convert young people and to recruit ministers. Baptists were very much in the minority in Sweden, however, in Stockholm and the surrounding towns there ‘were several Baptist churches enticing many youths into their folds with o variety of social activities not offered by the state church ‘which is Lutheran. This entertainment did much to convert young Swedes to the Baptist faith. Though less impressed with the relig jon's social lure than with its rigidity and serverity, my father, nonetheless, became one of its first converts. He wes ordained a Baptist minister at the age of twenty-two and at twenty-eight was raised to the status of pastor. When he was twenty-nine he married. Thirteen children follow. ed, though only three survived to maturity, two daughters and one ton. |, Nils Holstrom, am that son, and whether out of love, oF an overwielming passion to see the family name perpetuated, my father showered me with special attention. My parents had married late in life as was common for Swedes in those days. Many Scandinavians didn’t even reach adolescence until their late twenties or early thirties, There were exceptions, and | was one. Some say that the cold northern climate slows sexual maturity, but by age fourteen I was hot as hell and chasing any available female, Hl never forget an event that occurred during the summer of 1818, just after the Russian Revolution and before the end of World War I. | was still fourteen at the time. My father and some other Baptist ministers had planned an excursion by ship for some two hundred young parishioners, This was very exciting as most af us had never left our country before, Early in the morning, as we gathered at the dock, | noticed @ beautiful flaxen-haired girl. Struck by her beauty, | immediately decided | had to meet her. As soon as we were on board the ship, | began searching for her in the crowded public rooms. | found her with an older youth who, | was relieved to discover, was only her brother. | introduced myself, and she told me her name was Hild ‘The twoand-a-half hours it took to cross the Bay of Bothnia and reach Turku, Finland where we were to picnic went by quickly as we talked and laughed and got acquainted. We managed to sit together at the picnic and in the afternoon when it was time to re-embark, we ‘made arrangements to get to know each other even better during the return trip, And that we did, 8 VEBRDIZBRDIARD THE SPORY It was close to six o'clock and the sun had gone down. Most of, the young people dozed on lounge chairs in the long Swedish twi- light, but nat Hildi and I. We took a turn around the deck and found a chance to slip away. Wandering through the engine room, we found the door to the anchor chain storage compartment unlocked. Closing it behind us we were alone at last. We kissed, fondled and tndressed each other; then we made love. It was my first complete sexual experience, and | believe, hers also. | was never closer to heaven, Determined that our bliss last forever, wildly in love with cour youth and the glorious release of the moment, we were com: pletely oblivious to the passing of time Suddenly the door butst open. There stood my father, crimson with rage, andthe ship's captain, chuckling to himsolf. The ship had been docked for thirty minutes. Without a word my father and the captain left, closing the door behind them. Hildi and I dressed immediately and hurtiad to the dock where our fathers awaited us. 1 nover saw her again, Al the way home father said nothing. With his severe demeanor, heavy head of white hair, and cane, he looked every day of his seventy-two years, | wished he would beat me with his cane or vent his anger in a torrent of verbal abuse — anything to ease the tension. Instead, he would not even look at me. When we got home | was sont directly to bod, but sleep was impossi ‘The following morning | arose at the usual time, dressed, and went downstairs to breakfast. My family were already seated at the table. Quietly, | slipped into my chair. The silence was broken only by father's blessing of the meal. When breakfast was finished, father went into his study and I took the cue to leave for school. The next three days were exactly like the first, silent and cold, | slept fitfully and could scarcely eat bite, The strain was exhausting, and I so desperately wanted to alleviate it that | even tried to con vince myself that father had not really seen Hildi and me aboard ship, But nothing stopped the worry and fear within me, When | arrived home from school on the fourth day, my father was in his study. is | started up the stars for my room, he heard me and called me into the room where | found a stranger with him, | was not asked to sit down, Removing his spectacles, father very slowly and deliberately told me that if I were to be a success and a credit to my family, all sexual yearnings would have to be checked until my education was complete. He reminded me that Swedish schooling was tiesed on competition and unless I graduated in the top quarter of my class I would be unable to become an engineer as | had planned. He explained that sexual activities dilute one’s learning |~@F NIELS oug Malloy ae capability and to prevent that from happening, he had decided that for my own good I should be infibulated “To this end | have sent for Mr. Tollefson. He is an expert in infibutation and will perform the operation. Its for your ovm good, Nils, to prevent your falling by the wayside before your goals in life have been achieved. Now, go to your room and remove your clothing. Come down in just your bathrobe and slippers. | will help Mr. Tollefson make the necessary preparations.” My heart was in my mouth and my head was spinning. The room was cold, but 1 was in a pool of sweat, | have never known such fright. | really didn’t know what infibulation was and feared it ‘might be the same as castration. | wanted to run, but | felt weak and knew I dare not defy my father. Shaking, | did as he bid, When I returned to the study he told me to sit an the corner of his desk where he had placed a towel. Still trembling, | obeyed. Mr. Tollefson opened my robe and went to work, all the while giving a running commentary on what he wes doing and why. He explained that infibulation was a mechanical constriction of the foreskin which would automatically make erection difficult, if not impossible, and that within a few weeks the craving for sexual activity would sub- side, He said it had been necessary to infibulate his own son who eventually perceived its benefits. What was more he hed himself been infibulsted by his father and was none the worse for having been “locked up" during adolescense. He thought it normal for a boy to be infbulated at adolescense and considered college graduation as the eppropriate time for breaking the seal or fibule, There would be time enough for the pleasures of feminine companianship. In time, sid he, | would realize my father’s wisdom and would event ually thank him, Whether that were true or not remained to be seen, tut his words at last soothed and calmed me, | looked toward my father. He sat in his chair, leaning forward on his cane. His jaw was clenched and his eyes were like small slit. He was pale as a ghost. | had never before seen him look like that. His face was @ mask which told, all too clearly, the emotions at war within him at that moment. The next thing | knew Mr. Tolleson was massaging my pen but not in a way that would cause an erection. As circumcision is virtually unknown in Scandinavia foreskins abound, In fact, I never saw a circumcized man until | left my own country. Like my coun ‘rymen | too was in possession of a foreskin and a well-formed one at that. This, Mr. Tollefson proceeded to examine carefully, re arranging it to eliminate any folds, and taking considerable time to decide exactly where he would make the insertions He told me that there wore several forms of infibulation and that mine would be the mast commoniy practiced: a vertical, top-to-bottom piercing about one-quarter inch in front of the actual tip of the penis, parallel to and just infront of the urethral opening. 1 felt as if | were in another world, a dream. Was it possible this was happening to me? | was jolted back to reality as Mr. Tollefson began slowly and methodically packing cotton into the front of my foreskin, He was certainly in no hurry as he tested the feel to make sure the cotton was in precisely the right place end had the proper firmness. After some deliberation he decided upon the proper placement for the piercing. In the meantime father rose from his chair and brought aver a basin containing a damp cloth with which he sponged my forehead, Taking a thick silver needle in his right hand, Mr. Tolle son gripped my poor penis firmly in his left hand and proceeded to pieree the upper portion of the foreskin. While it wasn't as painful as I had anticipated, | wasn’t sure the lower half wouldn't be, It wasn't, though it seemed an eternity before the tip of the needle passed completely through, At this point father removed the cloth fram my face, and | felt Mr. Tollefson relax his grasp on my penis. Together they studied the position of the needle and agreed that the placement was correct and 9 that there was no need to repierce, Mr, Tollefson then threaded the needle with a rether heavy linen thread and pulled it through the fresh piercings until almost a foot of thread projected on either sie. That was the only real pain in the whole procedure and | thaught he would never stop pulling, After cutting the thread an ane end to free the needle, he pulled back the foreskin, revealing the cotton packing he had inserted earlier. He slowly pulled all the cottan past the thread and discarded it. He then knotted each end of the dang ling thread separately, one knotted at the top of the piercing, the ‘thor at the bottom, While he repacked his kit, Mr. Tollefson told me that the linen threads would be left in place for several weeks until the pierced skin was fully healed, at which time he would return, remove the threads, and fit me with a pormanent ring | awoke early the next morning and examined myself, reviewing all the while the happenings of the night before. | realized that things were not a bad as I had feared. I had not been castrated, my world fad not collapsed, and the little threads on both sides of my foreskin were really of very little consquence, In fact, 1 decided, maybe Mr, Tollefson and my father were right and infibulation would truly benefit me. ‘At school that day | detailed everything to my best chum Arne, who told me his sixteen-year-old cousin had been caught masturbe: ting at the age of twelve and had been infibulated because of it. We planned to mest with Amne’s cousin the next weekend so | could find out what to expect of my future. A couple of months passed and Mr. Tollefson returned to our house. This time he brought a selection of gold rings, fibules as they were called, in various sizes. | required one of the largest, a fact of which I was rather praud, He removed the linen thread and inserted the open hollow ring, fitting one end into the other and clamping the ends together to prevent the ring from being opened and re: moved. During the next few months, my father often checked to make certain the fibule was unbroken, However, as time passed, his in spections became less frequent and less thorough. Eventually they ceased altogether, perhaps because of my good grades in school. No doubt he assumed that my high scholastic standing indicated the in fibulation was working, Little did he know. ‘A number of my classmates were infibulated as |. In fact we enjoyed 2 certain status among our comrades and would sometimes flgunt our rings in gymnasium, It was from the fellow members of this little clique that I learned haw to defeat my father’s purpose. Since the ring was clamped and not welded, there was a way in which it could be removed and replaced with a false fibule that looked exaetty like the original but wasn't functional and could be easily removed, Only a very close examination would reveal the fact that my new fibule was an impostar. And since father was na longer inspecting ‘At the age of twenty-one | graduated from school, high on the list of gifted students. My father gave me a gold watch as a gradua tion present. Graduation night he knacked an my bedraom door, 10 something he had never done before, and without sitting dawn said, “You have completed your education wall, Nils, and | am praud of you, You are now 2 man and entitled ta the company of women. If you send for Mir. Tollafson, he will remove your fibule,” He walked out closing the door beltind him. | laughed to myself thinking of the funny little ring that for seven years had served no purpose, The quip of the day was sent to us by Sailor Sid, Said one Watusi to another Watusi, “I can't recall the name, ‘but the nase has a familiar ving.” Spain 4 Ge fom 1125 Irwin Lawton, OK 73501 PIERCED BODY JEWELRY in high lustre stainless steel. I really don't want any hassle or embarrassment. What is your experience with these matters? Will | always have to take my jewelry out before traveling? ‘A Of all the questions people ask us about piercing, this, believe it or not, is one of the most common. tis doubtful , unless you have a great many piercings con: centrated in one area, or the jewelry you are wearing is massive, that airport security will give you any trouble at all. Metal de- tectors seem to vary in both sensitivity and sophistication depend- ing upon the airport. Most of them appear to react to large con centrations of metal. This is why you get stopped if you have a pocket full of change or a big belt buckle. While your jewelry might be picked up by the detector, tis doubtful that the amount ‘would be sufficient to “blow the whistle” on you. If you are at all worried, but would still prefer not to remove ‘your jewelry (I personally feel undressed without mine), you might try one of those ploys which should confuse the equipment suf- ficiently for you to make it through security with nothing more than a wave of the “magic wand”: If your nipples are pierced, wear a shirt or blouse with metal snaps or buttons on the pockets Western style shirts are great as they almost always use metal snaps. To camouflage your genital piercings wear pants for traveling, and pick a pair with a metal zipper or button fly. Security agents ex- pect their equipment to react to these metal ciosures so they never stop to think that there might be something else underneath, Don’t worry about it. Go ahead, get pierced. And while you're atit, have a nice trip. Q— What isthe best way to care for my new plercing? A—The PFI Quarterly and its staff are not engaged in the practice Cf medicine and cannot make recommendations. We offer the following list of guidelines made from consultation with three physicians, however, the final option must come from your own doctor. 1) The most important thing you can do to speed healing and minimize the possiblity of infection is to keep the new pierc- ing clean. If you do nothing more than wash at least twice daily, you will probably heal beautifully. Low ph soaps are generally less irritating than others 2) An antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, which is aval able without prescription from your neighborhood pharmacy, may be used for the first few days after the piercing or if signs (of an infection occur. However, you should not use it for more than a week to ten days as prolonged use can lead to any one of a number of problems. Care should be exercised as some people are allergic to the antibiotics in these preparations. 3) The oily contents of a vitamin E capsule have been found by some to help healing, although they can cause iritation in the urethra if used on a Prince Albert piercing, 4) One physician recommends taking a Vicon-C capsule three times daily to speed up the bodies healing process.
