EFL CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Õ English is part of a national educational policy


in Chile. It is conceived as a tool for
understanding other cultures and developing
new learning skills.

Õ The new EFL curriculum was implemented


nationwide in 1998.

Õ The main objectives and contents of the EFL


curriculum reflect an emphasis on the
development of reading and listening
comprehension skills, although it does not
exclude speaking and writing.

Õ Learning a foreign language starts in 5th


Grade (middle school). Before 1998, it
started in 7th grade.

Õ EFL coursebooks are provided free for every


school in the country (distributed by the
Ministry of Education.)

Õ Performance standards in English will be


aligned with the levels defined by ALTE, the
Association of Language Testers of Europe
(www.alte.org).

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The

launched in 2003 to improve the quality and
availability of English language teaching in Chile
with the aim of enabling Chilean citizens to
function in English.
GOALS

‡ //0: English language skills will be tested for the


first time in schools nationwide (SIMCE).
‡ /||: deadline for all EFL teachers to be certified
at a minimum level of English equivalent to ALTE 3.
‡ /|: Students will have achieved the following
language proficiency levels:
‡ 8th graders: equivalent to ALTE 1
‡ 12th graders: equivalent to ALTE 2
