CourseDescription:
ThiscoursefocusesontheculturegoalareaoftheACTFL
WorldReadinessStandards
.
Technologyprovidesaportaltoauthenticculturalmaterialsinthedigitalenvironmenttodays
studentsinhabit.Wewillbeginbydefiningculturewithregardtoitsproducts,practices,and
perspectives.Participantswilllearnhowtouseandwillcreatewebbasedinstructionalmaterials
(teachingmodules)toenhancestudentunderstandingofculturalproducts,practices,and
perspectivesintheirlanguageclassrooms.Theseteachingmodulesleveragetheavailabilityof
authenticculturalmaterials.

Youwillhave

FinalPresentation
Thesecondpresentationwillbebasedonyourfinalpaper.Again,youwillseektoinformthe
classofyourmethods,butalsotoengagetheminconversationaboutthetechmoduleyou

Thefinalresearchprojectisfocusedonajustificationoftheoryandmethodologybehindoneof
thetechnologymodulesyoudevelop.
Option1:TheoreticalApproach
Youmightchoosetoexamineatechmoduleinamoregeneral,theoreticalway.This
wouldbeappropriateifyouareunabletousethetechmoduleyouwouldliketoexamine.
Example:Youcouldexaminetheassessmentofinterculturalcompetence(modules3

and4)inworldlanguagestudy,andrelatethislitandresearchtowhatyouwould
theoreticallydowithyourstudents.

Option2:StudentLearning(SelfStudy)
Choosethisoptionifyouareplanningtousethetechmodulewithyourstudentsandyou
areabletogatherinformaldatafromthemtogaininsightabouttheeffectivenessofthe
moduleontheirlearning.Forexample,ifyouusedGoogleMapsinmodule2,youcould
opttoresearchstudentsunderstandingofthe3Psthroughavirtualfieldtrip.Datacould
includeobservationsofthestudentsduringthevirtualfieldtrip,anexaminationofhow
wellstudentscouldanswerquestionsonthemoduleorobservationsofsmallgroup
discussionsafterthevirtualfieldtrip.
Option3:EffectivenessofTeaching(SelfStudy)
Choosethisoptionifyouwouldliketotesttheeffectivnessofyourownteaching.Focus
ononetechnologymoduleandtesttheeffectivenessofyourteachingduringthemodule.
Forexample,youcouldconductasimulationintechnologymodule4,keepingajournal
torecordperceptionsofyourteachingandobservationsofstudentlearning.Youwould
alsoexamineyourstudentsassessmentsinthemoduletoreflectontheeffectivenessof
yourplanningandinstructionontheirabilitytodemonstrateinterculturalcompetence.

Withanyoftheoptions,youwillexaminethetheoryandmethodologybehindthetechnology,
studentlearning,andteachingmethodologies.Youwillpresentyourfinalpapertopicina
formalpresentationattheendofthesemester.Thearticleswereadduringthecourseprovidea
modelforyouranalysis.

Step1:Proposalforpaper
Thisisthefirststepinthefinalresearchproject.Youwilldiscussyourresearchideaandpresent
yourresearchquestion(s).Thiswillbeapprovedfirstbeforeyouproceedwiththeannotated
bibliographyandthefinalpaper.

Step2:Annotatedbibliography
Youwillreviewaminimumof4scholarlyarticlesrelatedtoyourtopic.ProvidethefullAPA
citationandabriefdescriptionofthearticle,illustratingthemaintopicsandissuesthatareraised
inthearticle.Alsoprovideanoutlineanddescribehowyoumightusethisarticleinyourpaper.

Step3:Outline
Provideacompleteoutlineofyourpaperthatcontainsthemajorheadingsandsubheadings.It
willbehelpfultohavedonesomereadingonyourtopicandtohavecompletedtheannotated
bibliographybeforecompletingtheoutline.Youwillreceivefeedbackontheoutlinebeforeyou
beginthewritingofyourfinalpaper.

Step4:FinalPaper
Thisisan
analytical/scholarly
researchpaper.Yourfinalprojectwillbeevaluatedonhow
wellyouareabletoprovideatheoretical/methodologicalrationalebasedonthecourse
readings,thepostingsofotherparticipants(suchasblogs,articles,websites,expertreviews,
etc.),classpresentations,andoutsideresearch.Itisessentialtoshowhowyourmodules

demonstratebestpracticesinlanguageinstruction.Youneedtofollowtheformatofa
scholarlyarticle.

EachpapershouldfollowtheAPAconventionsforwritingforpublicationandshouldbewritten
usingthefollowingcriteriaasaguide:
