Allinall,todaywasinteresting.IhadnoideathatLakeAreawasabletoworkonbirds,
sothatwasfuntowatch.Beckywasveryfriendlyanddefinitelythemostwelcoming.Sheletmelookat
samplesunderthemicroscope,andIwasabletoidentifythethingsshedescribed.Itwasreallybusyatthe
clinic,asitwasSaturday.Thephonewasringingoffthehookwithpeopletryingtogetinforan
appointment.Myfavoritepartwaswatchingtheproceduresonthetwobirds.Oneofthebirdswasvery
aggressive,soitwasinterestingtoseehowthevetandvettechhandledit.Iwouldveratherbeenout
withthelargeanimals,butitwasnicetoseetheclinicalsideofthesmallanimalarea.

IlearnedalotmorethistimethanIdidtheprevioustime.IreallylikedthatIgottointeractwith
largeanimalsbecausethatstheareaImmostinterestedin.Watchingthemscopethehorsewithstrangles
wassointeresting.Becausethehorsesconditionwasverycontagious,everyonehadtobedressedfor
isolationandtheroomhadtobecompletelyscrubbeddownafterwards.Itwasalsoreallycooltowatch
Dr.Jamieputalineformedicationsinthehorseseyelidalthough,thehugeneedlemadeeveryonealittle
squeamish.Dr.Tornbergletmeridealonginthecountrytotwodifferentplacesforappointments.Ialso
gottoperformasterilescrub,andIwasgladthatIwasabletohelpandlearnatthesametime.Dr.
Tornbergandhistechnicianweresuchgoodeducators,andImreallygladIgottolearnfromthem.

Iwasthrilledtobeabletowatchasurgery,especiallyanemergencysurgery!Thishorsehada
hugeblockageinhiscolon.Colicisveryseriousandcanbedeadly,butthankfully,theywereabletosave
him.Itwasamazing!Thesurgerytookabout2hours.Afterlearningaboutsterilefieldsinmyhealth
scienceclass,itwasgreattoseehowtheymaintainedoneduringalongsurgerylikethis.Thefirst72
hoursaftercolicsurgeryarecritical,andthehorsewasprobablygoingtohavetostayattheclinicfor58
daysaftersurgery.SinceitwasSaturday,therewasalotofbusinessinthesmallanimalsideoftheclinic.
Catsanddogswerecomingandgoingforgroomingandshots,soIsawplentyofthat.Theclinicwas
supposedtocloseat12:30,buttherewasstillplentyofworktobedone.Ihelpedcleanstallsandfeed.I
planongoingtoworkasavetassistantthissummerbecauseIreallyenjoyedthisexperience.
