How does your product

represent particular social

groups?
Evaluation Question 2

Common Stereotypes

Men act, Women appear John Berger.

Women are dependent on male figures.

Teenagers usually have ASBOs.

Middle / Upper class people live peaceful

lives without problems.

Middle Class

All of the teenagers within the narrative come

from a middle class background and attend
public high school. They are fairly normal
teenagers and rely heavily on their friendship
groups. They have no family or money issues
so when the slightest problem arises they do
not know how to deal with it and lash out.
This conflicts the common ideology that most
children who cannot deal with social
difficulties come from a working / lower class
background with family or financial issues.

White-American

The antagonist within our narrative is a whiteAmerican teenage girl, she acts in a
psychopathic manner due to a school crush on
a boy resulting in bullying and her taking her
revenge. This may lead the audience to
generalise this representation to a broad group
of white-American people. This, obviously, isnt
necessarily the case but could be interpreted
by the audience in this way. This also, present
in the film the Black Swan as it also reflects the
issue of mental illness in white Americans.

Teenagers

The narrative is strongly focussed on those who are

teenagers. The bitchy nature and nastiness encoded
within the high school may appear to someone, who
hasnt had much experience with that setting, that
all high schools are like this and prejudge them
based on what they have seen within my production.
Although, the narrative would be briefly shown within
the trailer so someone who couldnt relate to what
they see on screen would be less likely to go and
watch the actual production. In the widely known
film, Hot Fuzz, teenagers are seen as hooded,
troublemakers which is also another stereotype our
production conflicts.

Boys

Younger members of the audience would see this negative

connotations of the representation of the boy who is shown in
the film as the antagonists target and for boys they may
assume that is how all boys act within society and may copy
the behaviour as they think this is the norm. Whereas, girls
may see how the antagonist reacts to the boy and they may
generalise this to all boys and develop a hatred for boys
which will affect their social behaviour. Boys / Men are usually
seen as the gender with the most power but this is conflicted
in our production as the boy is being targeted by the female
antagonist. Men being presented as weak is also present in
the Tom Cruise film, War of the Worlds as when something
greater than the protagonist comes into the narrative he is
seen to cry and try and run away from the situation.
