THINKING ABOUT THE INTERNET

IN MY LIFE…

By Gladys Baya (May 20,

2009)
Someone sent me one of those chain
emails today… lots of jokes about
teachers…
TEACHER:  Winnie, name one
important thing we have today
that we didn't have ten years ago.
WINNIE:      Me!
Now, talking seriously…
“The Internet was built around …
as from a 1969; though in fact,
the Web as people understand it
now, starts in 1994, with the
existence of web browsers, of the
world wide web”

Manuel Castells – Internet y la Sociedad Red (my translation)

(2000?)
So… this was just 15 years ago?!?
And this is MY today…
And, of course, there’s the Web
2.0…

For me and all these other people…

And in my classrooms???
…and today:
Now, talking SERIOUSLY…

TEACHER:  Winnie, name one

important thing we have today
that we didn't have ten years ago.
WINNIE:      Me!
We must not forget…
Technology is just a TOOL.
TOOL In the hands of teachers
and learners, the main elements in any classroom,
new technologies can be powerful transformers
and help empower learners… But they won’t
miraculously transform classes in which students
are not learning into learning paradises, or make
weak voices leaders of the world…
And before you stop watching this
slideshow…
TEACHER:   Harold, what do you call
a person who keeps on talking
when people are no longer
interested?
HAROLD:     A teacher
