UNITOVERVIEW
Thisunitbundlesstudentexpectationsthataddresssafety,theuseoftoolsandequipment,chemicalhazards,resourcedisposalandrecycling,andsciencenotebooking.Itis
designedtogivestudentsanoverviewofsafetyissuesthatarespecifictothelaboratorywheretheywillbeconductingtheirinvestigations.
Priortothisunit,studentshavehadmanyopportunitiesinpriorgradestolearnandapplysafetyrules,includingsafebehaviorandsafeuseofequipment,aswellashowto
organizestudentworkusingsciencenotebooks.
Duringthisunit,studentsdemonstratesafepractices,includingtheuseofpersonalprotectiveequipment,suchassafetygoggles.Theyalsolearnthelocationsanduseof
othertypesofsafetyequipment,suchasfireblankets,eyewashfountains,safetyshowers,andfireextinguishers.Studentsareintroducedtosafetyinformationcontainedin
MSDS/SDS.Studentsalsolearntoconserveanddisposeofmaterialsappropriately.Finally,studentsdeveloptheirownsciencenotebookstocollect,record,andanalyze
dataandinformation.

Afterthisunit,safetywillbetaughtandreinforcedeverytimestudentsworkinthelaboratoryorfieldsetting.Notebookingwillbeutilizedthroughouttheyearaswell.

collectiontechniques,andmodels.
