OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Describe the characteristics of 3-D and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships
among them
Specific Outcome 2: Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes using one attribute,
and explain the sorting rule [C, CN, R, V]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to identify the sorting rule when given a specific set
2. Students will be able to create their own set of shapes and define the sorting rule
3. Students will be able to describe the relationship between the shapes in the given set and
their sorting rule

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performan
ces:

Students will be able to discover and recall many different ways to sort.
Students will be able to determine the sorting rule based on the specific
sorting rules
Students will be able to create their own sets and determine their own
sorting rule
Students will be able to verbally and physically create different sets and a
specific sorting rule that is correlated.
What is the sorting rule for this specific set of shapes?
How do I know that is the correct rule?
What are the attributes within this set? How do they relate to the
rule?
Students will use manipulative, smart board activities and a
worksheet to show their knowledge in sorting.
Students will be able to show their knowledge of creating a rule
and a set.
Students will also show their ability to determine what the rule is
by a given set.

Students will be coming in from recess so they may take a few
minutes to get in the classroom and ready. When greeting
students at door tell them to hustle and get ready for math so
we can learn lots today!

hand when you have answer to the question.
Today we will be learning about sorting rules and we will be
given a set of shapes and we have to determine what the rule
is. We are going to play a game.
Daily agenda is on the board at the beginning of the day. This
allows for students to have prior knowledge on what is
expected which allows them to get into the math zone.
Are you ready to guess some rules?
Body
Time
Can you guess my rule?
This game is called: Guess my rule and what we have
to do is look at the sets of shapes and see if we can
determine how the shapes are sorted and what the
sorting rule is.
Can we do this!?
Using the SMARTBOARD, have presorted sets and ask
students to determine what rule I am looking at.
Have students raise their hand and explain the sorting
rule to me
This will allow for students to recall information on
attributes and sorting rules of shapes
This activity will also allow for students to get into the
10-15
sorting mindset and will prepare them for the next
minutes
activity that they will be doing independently
Use guiding questions if students are struggling with
determining what the sorting rule is
Ensure that students are raising their hands when
answering the questions
Make sure that all students are getting a turn to answer
a sorting question
Implement positive reinforcement
When students are done ask them to participate in a
brain break if needed.
All of you did so well with determining what the sorting
rule was, you can do it on your own!!
This activity can be used as a pre-assessment as this will help
me see where the students are and what they may struggle
with or what the class as a whole is struggling with. This portion
of the lesson will not be assessed formatively or summative as
it will show me what they students already know about sorting
and how confident they are. This portion of the lesson will
allow for me to see how much the students took away from the
lesson yesterday.
Differentiation: The use of guided questions will allow for
students to determine what she should be put in each set.
Create their own guess my rule
After we work through activities on the SMART BOARD
we will be working through a worksheet activity.
Giving students the activity sheet
Make sure they put their name on their sheet
20
minutes
Students will be given an activity sheet where they have
to cut the shapes out, sort the shapes according to a
rule that they create.
Give instructions on what they will be doing
Have an echo of what we are supposed to be doing
This activity can be formatively assessed, as it will allow for

students to create different sets of shapes and create their own
sorting rule. This allows for students to show their confidence in
sorting and to be able to create their own sorting rule and the
corresponding shapes.
Differentiation: Students may need extra guidance if they do
not understand the directions, directed or guided questions
may ne needed.
Present and guess our rules
Students will come sit down at my orange chair and one
at a time will present their guess my rule card
This will allow for students who are finishing up the last
few things on their activity to finish without feeling
pressured to quickly finish and have everyone waiting
for them.
5-7
The class will then be able to use prior knowledge to try
minutes
and guess their rule. This will allow for the students to
use their vocabulary of attributes and will be able to
show that they know how to sort different shapes
without a sorting rule.
Students will need to be reminded to remain respectful
when another child is presenting their rule.
Once done presenting, have students hand in on back counter.
This activity will be formatively assessed, as it will allow for
students to contribute to the discussion and show the
knowledge they have learned over the past few lessons.
Students will also be formatively assessed on their contribution
and participation during the discussion.
Closure
Time
This lesson scaffolds onto the next lesson, as students will have
to sort shapes with less known knowledge. In order to make
sure students understand how I can maintain asking guiding
1-2
questions when students are cutting and gluing their shapes to
minutes
their paper. This lesson allows for students to be able to be
one step closer to sorting without any rules or any prior given
knowledge.
If students can successfully sort their shapes with creating
their own rule, they are able to sort 2D shapes without a given
rule.
You guys did great with creating your rules! They are all so
different and unique! Are you ready to step up the challenge?
T
Tomorrow, we are going to be looking at more shapes and
creating more rules! Are you ready for that?
If time, we can read a story that deals with shapes, the greedy triangle. This
story does not deal directly with sorting shapes but still talks about how we
can see shapes in every day life and some of the shapes attributes that we
need to remember when we are sorting. This is a great way to incorporate
literacy into the lesson.
Todays lesson went well as I felt very planned and confident while making
my lesson. This lesson dealt with many of my concerns that I had with my
previous science lesson today and with talking to my TA after I was able to
learn a few strategies that may help. Wait time, again, is a big issue that I
want to continually strive to improve on. This may mean choosing the
students that may not be paying attention or choosing not to answer. I want
to ensure that everyone has an equal learning opportunity and have an

optimal learning experience. Today we sorted some shapes and we were
able to present them, this was a great idea in theory but could have been
better executed. After having the students present, I should have asked
them to put their papers on the back counter, rather than keeping them in
their hands as some students started fidgeting with their papers which
tended to be distracting. Also, I should have had had a cap on the amount
of guesses. I had qbout rough 3 guesses per student but it should have
been one and done as students started to change their rule while
standing up at the front presenting.
One last thing that could have been better executed was how many shapes
I wanted them to use when sorting. One student only used one shape in
each pile, which doesnt show their true knowledge of sorting at all.
Tomorrow for sorting this will expliciity be stated as I didnt think I would
have to worry about it.
Overall, students were engaged and on task the whole class. They enjoyed
what they were leaning and they were able to show progress towards
sorting and finding the rule and creating their own. I received awesome
feedback from my Teacher Associate, which made me very happy about this
lesson!!
Goals:
Wait time
Less distractions the better
Clear, concise constructions ( for how many needed and amount of
guesses)
