Name of lesson concept: Explaining elements of literary nonfiction


Umbrella Question to be answered with this lesson: What is literary
nonfiction? Why is it important to re-read literary nonfiction?
Today the students will learn: What are two or three main things you
want them to learn from your lesson? WRITTEN AS MEASUREABLE
OBJECTIVES (use Blooms!). They will be able to define literary nonfiction
and understand how to read it.
How will you link the new materials to prior learning? Knowledge of text
features
What will students do? Im going to read the book Waiting for Ice and
then the students will be filling out a literary nonfiction chart individually
How long will be spent on each part (timing)? Both 10 minutes
Will all students be doing the same thing? Yes
How will you know if students understand the content objectives? By
completing the chart and no unanswered questions
When will assessment occur? After they turn in their charts
How will you get the students attention? Introducing the lesson with a
short story
How are you going to teach this lesson? Im going to read a book to the
whole class and then go through the lesson by filling out the worksheet
(showing my example then students complete their own)

charts
