encounters with excessive force by policemen. Discrimination is a key concept in this
source. Also, majority of the police encounters described in this journal are those of
younger males. They explain what they went through and how they handled the situation.
This is a reliable source because it gives insight from direct people who have experienced
it personally.
Kaplan, Paul J. "Looking Through the Gaps: A Critical Approach to the LAPD's." Social Justice
2009: 61-81. Web.
This source comes from a magazine published in 2009. It talks about an incident
involving the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in California. The author of this
article, Paul Kaplan, is giving you a deeper look behind police brutality. A specific police
brutality incident involving a scandal. The LAPD has tried to cover up and morph parts
of a police brutality incident. Kaplan makes this source reliable by including direct
conversations from the event. He gives you incite about the laws and what went wrong on
the police departments end of the case. He brings up the issue about racism and the
views different minorities have on police and racism. This article was written to bring a
different perspective, a critical perspective, on the scandal and to bring out the truth
behind the scandal and the brutality.
McArdle, Andrea, and Tanya. Erzen. Zero Tolerance: Quality of Life and the New Police
Brutality in New York City. New York: New York University Press, 2001. Print.
This article specifically mentions four boys that have encountered brutality by police. She
refers to the brutality as a target for not only African American citizens, but also sexual
minorities and even the homeless. She specifically refers to police brutality in New York
as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. This book offers different views from different

aspects of society, such as womens views and law views. The author makes this a
reliable source by explaining many of the statistics that accompany the problems with
police brutality. She also mentions laws and codes, such as Section 16-128 and Section
16-113 (7) (b) of the New York City Administrative code. This book is relevant to my
topic because it gives an outlook, from one of the biggest cities, on police brutality and
the Quality of Life.
