Today we begin learning about decimal numbers. One of

the most important points to remember when working


with decimal numbers, doing operations such as addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division is to have what is
referred to as having the decimals lined up.

Ask what is a decimal?
Based on 10

Example: the numbers we use in everyday life are


decimal numbers, because there are 10 of them
(0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9).
Often "decimal number" is also used to mean a number
that uses a decimal point followed by digits that show a
value smaller than one.
Example: 45.6 (forty-five point six) is a decimal number.

In March of 2014, my wife and I went with her parents to
Arizona for a week. As part of the planning for the trip, we had
to figure out what the costs would be, especially as we were
sharing a house and a car rental.
We had to plan ahead to make sure that we wouldnt run out of
money, as well as keeping track of what we had spent.
You can see on the screen some of the planning we did for
shared expenses.
This chapter will help us learn to become better with money
calculations and working with other numbers that involve
decimals.

Planning also helps when learning math concepts. Part of the
planning we will do to aid in learning about decimal numbers
will be to create the foldable shown in the textbook on page 43.

Yesterday, we began a new chapter- chapter 2 where we will
learn about decimal numbers and operations on decimal
numbers. We had a discussion as to what is a decimal number,
mentioned estimation, and then created a study tool for you to
use in class to take notes.
Lets focus for a few minutes on estimation.
