OtheringandRhetoricalAnalysis
Inrecentyearsthemajorityhavetreatingandviewotherraces,cultures,ethics,and
backgroundsdifferently,butmorethelessthesame.Throughouthistoryracismhasbeenenabled
sincethebeginningoftimewiththehumanrace,letalonewekilleachotherovercolorofskin,
todifferentbeliefs,andhowweportrayourselves.Ibelievethatwehavechangedthewaywe
lookatothers,butalsohaventfullyacceptthechangesofeverythingabouteachandeveryone
ofthesecultures,races,ethicsandbackgrounds.Throughoutthisessayisabouthowwehave
grownwiththechangesandhowmuchhasnotchangedatall.
FirstofallisGloriaAnazalduaholdsalotonhowdifferentculturesgettreatedinHow
toTameaWildTongue.GloriaAnazalduashowshowherteacherproclaimsIfyouwanttobe
American,speakAmerican.Ifyoudontlikeit,gobacktoMexicowhereyoubelong(521).
ThisrighthereshowsthattheteacherexpectsyoutoknowandspeakproperEnglishwhen
you'reinAmerica,letalonedoesntcareonebitaboutherwhenshewastryingtohelp
pronouncehername.atPanAmericanUniversity,herandallChicanostudentswererequiredto
taketwospeechclassesjusttogetridoftheiraccents.Lookingatthisissadfromhowtheywant
tochangewhotheyaretojustbecomeAmericanized,tokindadestroyone'sculture.Gloriaalso
goesintotheUnitedStates,statingacountrywherestudentsinhighschoolsandcollegesare
encouragedtotakeFrenchclassesbecauseFrenchisconsideredmorecultured(524).That

righttherestrikesattheSpanishspeakingheart.Onelastthingshequotesisbytheendofthis
century,English,andnotSpanish,willbethemothertongueofmostChicanosandLatinos
(524),whichinasenseprettymuchrobsandhurtstheircultureofhowwecareverylittleabout
it.
Furthermore,FrederickDouglasshasshowarepasthistorydifferencesofareviewableon
cultures,races,andethics,toatoday'sstandard.Frederickproclaimsin1852thatThisfourthof
Julyisyours,notmine.Youmayrejoice,Imustmourn(465)thatblacksarestillslavesandare
beinghatedon,butsincethenwehavechangedandopenourmindstodifferentracesandcolors
ofpeople.Butthroughsomepeoplestillviewblacksasnothingmorethanapieceofanitemto
workforthem.InanotherlinehestatesTheamericanchurchisguilty,whenviewedin
connectionwithwhatitisdoingtoupholdslavery(471).Thisrighthereshowssupportsof
slaverybackthenunderthehouseofGodformanydifferentpeopleofdifferentreligions,but
hasalsochangeandviewdifferentlysincethattime.RickInmanduringweek3hasgavehis
lookonFrederickDouglasswith
HechastisesthegenerationsthatfollowedtheFounding

Finallycomeshislastquotethatseemstoshowthatourforefatherswereonaroadtoabolishthis
differentincultures,andraceswiththeConstitution,fromFrederickslinethatOntheother
handitwillbefoundtocontainprinciplesandpurposes,entirelyhostiletotheexistenceof
slavery(474).Inallofthishasproventhatwehavechangedinourviewsamajorityofthe
differencesinculture,race,andethicsofdifferentpeople.

GoingfurtherontheissuesifthemajorityhaschangedourviewsonothersBarack
ObamasaysInSouthCarolina,wheretheConfederateFlagstillflies,webuiltapowerful
coalitionofAfricanAmericansandwhiteAmericans.(477)alinewithagreatexceptioneven
wheremostpeoplewouldbeconsideredracistinthatpartoftheAmericas.Thisshowswehave
workedtogethersomucharebehaveboundandputaredarkpastinaplaceofremembranceto
makesurethisdoesnthappenagain.AsmalllinefromBarrackisSegregatedschoolswere,and
are,inferiorschools(479).Inallevidencethishelpsthatifweexpectyousomeoneisnotbased
oncolor,race,orculturewouldcreateabetterplaceforus,whichinreturncreateaperfectplace.
OnethingthatBarracksaysisproblemsthatareneitherblackorwhiteorLatinoorAsian,but
ratherproblemsthatconfrontusall(477)whichinthiscaseshowsthatwehavestillhaving
problemswithotherpeoplesculturesandracesbasesonwhotheyare.
JuneJordanquotesHerewasanegativeBlackreactiontoaprizewinning
accomplishmentinBlackLiteraturethatWhitereadersacrossthecountryhadselectedasabest
seller(159)showsthereactiontopeopleofdifferentcolorsandraces.Theybelievethiswas

ofdifferentbackgroundsofblackEnglish.Forsomeofuswouldagreeordisagreeifwehave

changedornot,Ithinkwearestillsittinginthemiddleofwhathasntchangedandaccepted
somenewthings.

ofJulyin1852.Thespeech,DouglasswrotewaspublishedJuly5,1852

Hisstancewasverystraightforwardofgivingalineofreasoningofwhat
itliketobeaslaveontheFourthofJulyandhowitisntthefourthofJulyforhim.Breaking
downeachpartofhisspeechrepresentssomethingdeeperinthestructureof
rhetoricheuses.Like
thefirstsectionusesgreatuseofethosthatourforefathersfoughtfortruereasoningandwilldietokeep
theircountryfallingvictimtoBritain.
Thisalsosucceedsingrabbingtheattentionofallthepeoplelistenorreadingthis,becausewe
canallrelatetofourthofJuly.ThenthereisashiftinFrederickslanguagemidwaythroughhisspeech
,

usingpathostobringeveryonearoundofhowhefeelsdifferentthanthewhiteman.This
structureistoforcedownintoyourheartandhesaysperpetuateslaverythegreatsinand
shameofAmerica!(466).Inadditiontothisshowshowareitistobeblackifyoucommitone
crime,whichequaldeathinmostcases.ThisisonewaythatFrederickshowsthatthisiswrong
andtheyshouldfeeltheemotionshowanyoftheslavesfeel.
Bythelastpartofthespeechhisstructureandtonechangeagaintoamorecalmeryeta
verystraightforwardtone.Fromthereheshowstheuseofethoswithinthiswholelastpartofhis
speech.Frederickusesinsuchamannerthatheisbeinglogicalyetdemandinginasensethat
thisisafightingcasetobereckonedwith.HealsoshowsthattheConstitutionwiththewords
thatstatefreedom,evenbreaksthepropertiesoftheslavelaws.Thissucceedsthatmakespeople
thinkthatmaybeheisrightaboutthiswholefreedomthing.Overallhismessageorstatement
