COMPETENCY 7. Work collaboratively with community resources.

Community resources
1. Describe the process you would use to work with a child with an IFSP, including how you would communicate effectively with families,
colleagues and specialists to implement plans as needed. If you have worked with one or more infants or toddlers who did have an IFSP or
special needs, explain how you worked to support the child and family.
I would use open communication with the family. If services were done at the center I would use a notebook to make sure communication and
memos are passed to all parties. We have had infants that are in physical therapy at our center. We have had them do physical therapy both on
family time and in the center. When the therapy is in the center we are able to see the techniques the therapists use with the children and
implement them during the day. When therapy is done on family time we have had parents bring in handouts so we are able to follow through at
the center.

2. Describe how you would provide parents with information on community resources (e.g., health, mental health, oral health, nutrition, child
welfare, parenting programs, early intervention-special education screening and assessment services, and basic needs such as housing
and child care subsidies). Give an example of a situation where you referred a family to a resource in the community (formally or informally)
do you have brochures, handouts, binder or list available and used to refer families as needed?
I would use a gentle approach with the families if I had a concern. I would be open and honest and have some form of literature that they could
take with them after the conversation. We dont currently have literature like brochures readily available for families, but it is something our
center has discussed. Our family has referred one of our preschoolers to the early childhood program in the school district. This child was
significantly behind socially and verbally. We provided the family with names and phone numbers. In this case they also consulted their
physician and the child now does in home and n the center therapy.

3. Give examples of your use of community resources available to support and expand your professional skills and knowledge. Have you
gone to or used information, services or materials from your local CCR&R, Family Resource Center, library, professional association or
support group, YMCA, health department, etc.?
Our center is in a community that has a library, school service and the health department as resources. Our center uses all three of these
resources. Our staff turns to the library to find books to bring into the classroom and research topics their class is interested in. We have had
illnesses in our center which the health department has helped us notify the families of signs and symptoms as well as how treat. We have
families that participate in different programs that the local school districts offer.
