So What is Litter?
Litter basically is misplaced solid waste,
such as
- cigarette butts, fast food packaging
and plastic grocery bags
but can also be recyclable
items such as
- paper, aluminum
cans, plastic
bottles and
glass bottles
According to Keep America Beautiful,
people litter because:
They feel no sense of ownership
They believe someone elsea park
maintenance or highway worker will pick
up after them.
Litter already has accumulated.
It's convenient.
And the Texas
Department of
Transportation
states that . . .
more than half of
roadside litter in
Texas flies out of
the back of pickup trucks. Throwing
lightweight objects in your truck bed is the
same as throwing them out the window.

Some preventative measures you can do to

help limit litter can be to:
Carry a litterbag with you or in your vehicle.
Securely cover trash receptacles to prevent
wind or animals from spreading litter.
When hauling trash cover your vehicle,
truck or trailer with a tarp to prevent litter
from falling or blowing out.
Clean up after yourself, and for the next
person when visiting public spaces, parks and
recreation areas.

So where does litter come from?

Keep America Beautiful states . . .
that often motorists and
pedestrians are blamed
for most litter, however,
other primary sources are:
Uncovered trucks
Household trash at the
curbside
Dumpsters used by
businesses
Construction and
demolition sites
Loading docks

The Litter Challenge is to

pick up one (1) piece of litter
each day for one month.
For example if one person picks up
one piece of litter weighing
approximately 2oz. everyday for 30
days that litter can amount to 60 oz.
of litter picked up, or 3.75 lbs. of
litter, by one person over one month.
Now consider if 10 people accept
the litter challenge and pick up one
piece of litter each day for 30 days.
That can add up to approximately
37.5 lbs. of litter each month picked
up by only 10 people.
But what if 100 people accept the
litter challenge and pick up one
piece of litter each day for 30 days.
That can add up to approximately
375 lbs. of litter picked up from our
communities each month.
If 100 people pick up one piece of litter
every day for a month and can sustain
that throughout an entire year that is
375 lbs. of litter picked up per month
times 12 months, which equals
4,500 lbs. of litter picked up each year.
4,500 lbs. equates to 2 1/4 tons of litter
picked up from our communities each
year making a more attractive,
beautiful community for us all.
