Science Lesson Reflection 1

My first science lesson that I taught was on animal classification. My teacher told me that
I could do anything I wanted on the subject. This made me nervous because I had no guidelines
going into creating my lesson. However, this ended up being the best thing that could have
happened because I could create an interesting model 5e lesson plan the way I wanted. I decided
to have the students classify bags of animals in their own way before telling them the scientific
way to classify animals. As the students were organizing the animals within there groups I
walked around and asked engaging questions. I thought that it was important that the students
knew that there was no correct way to group their animals because I had given them no prior
instructions. The only critique Mrs. Montgomery had about my lesson was to explain why we
classify animals the way I was teaching them too. For future references I need to make sure I
give the students reasons why we learn thing one way and not another. The way that I taught my
first lesson was new to me because I had only observed lesson from textbooks. The students
really grasped animal classification faster than I would have thought, because there are some
complicated characteristics in classifying an animal. I only used engage, explore, and explain for
my first lesson which I think left the students excited for my next lesson. Overall, I think that my
first lesson went well and I would recommend it to other teachers teaching animal classification.
