gardensanddescribedwhateachareawasandsomeoftheimportantplantsandcharacteristicsin
eacharea.Also,weweretaughthowtodosomebasicthingsaroundthegardens.Welearned
howtooperatethelawnmower,operatethewatersystem,andidentifyplantdiseases.Wealso
sortedaplantshipmenttobeputintheplantstore,aswellastrimminghedgesandcuttingoff
deadgrowthfromafewbushes.Weendedthedaysettingupfortheweddingplannedon
Saturday.
Observations
:Kevinsaid
thatallcactiaresucculents,
butnotallsucculentsare
cacti.Iaskedifsucculents
wereanorderofplants,and
Kevinsaidthattheyarenot.
Instead,theyaremerelya
characteristicofplantsit
doesnothavetodowith
relations.Ifaplanthas
thick,spongyleavesthat
retainlotsofwater,whichis
commonindesertplants,
thenitisasucculent.
Ialsonoticedthatthe
carnivorousgardenswerea
littlemessy.Notonlywerethereweedstakingover,butInoticedthatsomeoftheplant
identificationsignsdidnothavethatspeciesnearit(oratall).Itooknoteofthistocomebackto
anotherdayandhopefullyfixthismess.

:Apalmtreefell.Wepulleditbackupandtieditdown.Hopefully,itwilllive,though
itlookslikeitshouldbeokay.After,weclearedinvasiveplantsoutofsomeofthegardensas
wellasclearingmoredeadgrowth.Kevintaughtusaboutcottonplantssuchashowtheygrow
andwhichcottonishigherquality.Clearingtheinvasiveplantsanddebristookupmostofthe
day,andrequiredtwotrucktripstothetrashcenterneartheUSFparking&transportation
services.Afterwefinished,Ifertilizedallofthegrassintheeasternportionofthebotanical
gardens.
Observations
:Kevintaughtustocutintothewoodofaplantorbranchthatweareunsureofif
itisliving,andifitisgreenitisliving,andifnot,itisdead.Ifitisdead,weduguptheplantand
removedit.

Project:Lighting,weeding,andthepond.

:KevinshowedustheAraceaegarden.Kevintaughtusthatplantsfromthisfamilyall
haveinflorescence,whichisaspadix.Afterthis,Iinstalledandtestedlightingaroundthe
gardens.Notonlynecessarylightinglikestreetlamps,butaestheticlightingaswellinthe
gardens.Afterthis,Isweepedupthewalkways.Thiswasallmainlyduetotheweddingwhich
wasgoingtooccurlaterintheevening.
Then,Kevintookmetothepond.Heexplainedhowthepondworked.Wehadtofixthe
machineinthepondthatregulatedthewaterlevel.Itworkedprettymuchlikeatoilet.Therewas
averysimilarmechanismthathadapipewithafloater,andifitgottoolow,itletthewaterin
throughthewelluntilthefloaterwaswhereitwassupposedtobe.Thewellwenttotheaquifer,
sothepondwaterwasallstraightfromtheaquifer.
Iwentbacktothecarnivorousgardenanddidsomeweeding.AsIwasweeding,Ifoundthe
DroseraCapillaristhatthesignwasreferencing,butthesignwasinadifferentpot.Iputthat
whereitwassupposedtogo.TheDroseraCapillariswereinbloom.TheSarracenialooked
healthyinsomeareas,butnotashappyinothers.Theylookedtheworstintheareasthatwere
mostovergrownwithweeds.Afterweedingapot,Ifoundavenusflytrapunderneathallthe
weeds.Thepoorthingwasquitesicklylooking,buthopefullyitwillstarttorecoversinceithas
sunlightagain.
Droseracapillaris.
Observations
:Kevintookmeandafewvolunteerstoshowusafewmorethingsinthe
botanicalgardens.Wewenttothebutterflygardensandtookalookataveryinterestingvine.It
wasan
Aristolochia
grandiflora.Theflowerswerebeautifulandintricate,andtherewere
swallowtailbutterfliesswarmingtheplantaswellasthecaterpillarsbeginningtohatchandeat
theleaves.Theflowersmellslikerottingmeat,andthisattractsflies.Whatitdoesnextis
interesting.Whentheflygoestotheflower,itgoesinsideandgetstrappedsincetheflowerdoes
notallowtheflytoescape,butonlytoenter.Atfirst,itsoundedlikeitwasacarnivorousplant,
butitturnsoutitonlytrapsthefliestopollinatetheflower.Afteradayortwo,theflowerrelaxes
andthefliesareabletoescape.
Aristolochiagrandifloraalongwiththeswallowtailcaterpillarthateatsthemup!
AfterviewingtheAraceaegarden,Inoticedthatalloftheplantsactuallylookquitedifferent.
Theonlythingthatseemstorelatethemisthespadix,butotherthanthis,onewouldneverguess
theywererelated.Theycameinalldifferentshapes,sizes,andcolors.
Noneofthestaffputanylifeintothelake,however,lifefounditswaytothepond.Thepondhad
manymosquitofishandsimilarsmallfish.Therewerelotsofcrayfish.Therewasnopondscum
andalmostnoplantlife.Kevintoldmethatthefisheatanyplantshetriestoputinthepond.
Goldfishwereupstream,sosomeonemusthaveputtheminwithoutthestaffsknowledge.

mowthelawn.Also,weclearedlotsofdebris.Brancheswerecutfromtreesthatgrewintothe
pathsalongwithdeadgrowthsuchasdeadbamboo.Allofthiswastakentothedump.
Observations
:Whilemulchingthecitrusgroves,Inoticedmanyofthetreeslookedsickly.Iwas
toldthattherewasacitrusdiseasethatwaspassedonbybeetlesinFlorida,andthatswhythey
aresickly.IalsonoticedthiswhentravellingacrosscentralFloridaandnoticingthattheorange
groveslookedverypoor.

wateredthebonsaitreesaswellaswateredtreesandplantsthatlookedsickly.
Observations
:Imworriedaboutsomeoftheplantsandtreesatthegardens.Someofthemlook
quitesick.Imnotsurewhyorhowwecanhelpthemotherthanwateringthem.Kevinwasnt
around,soIcouldntaskhim,thoughIwillbringitupinthefuture.

asvines,weeds,etc.Thegardens
lookedmuchcleanerandbeautiful
afterIfinished.Thedayendedwith

Observations
:Ifoundsomemonarch
caterpillarsonsomemilkweed.Iwas
surprisedsinceIdidntrealize
monarchbutterflieslayeggsin
Florida,butrather,farthernorth.Also,thereweremanymonarchbutterfliesaround.Whatcaught
myinterestthemostwasahummingbirdmoth.Itwasamoththatwasshapedandactedlikea
hummingbird,completewithveryfastbeatingwings.Iamassumingtheyevolvedthiswayto
trickpredatorsintothinkingitisabirdratherthanamoth,sinceperhapshummingbirdshaveless
predators.

:ThedaystartedoutwithKevinteachingusaboutLakeBehnke.Heexplainedhow
LakeBehnkewasoriginallyanatural,smalllake,andthatitwasdugouttobelargertoserveas
aretentionpondforBruceB.Downs.Thereisanotherretentionpondontheoppositesideof
BruceB.Downs,andthereisalinkbetweenthetwounderneaththeroad.Kevinthenexplained
howitisvisiblewherethemaximumextentofthewaterlevelcanbeseen,asthegroundindents
alittleattheline.Also,therearedifferentgrassesbetweentheindentandthewaterlevel,asthey
arespeciesofgrassesandplantsthatcanliveinbothdrylandandsubmergedinwater.Thisisan
ecotone,andtherearecertainspeciesofplantsthataresuitedforecotones.Kevinthendescribed
landdevelopmentlaws,suchaswhereandhowthelinesaredrawnaroundwetlandstoprevent
development.Also,Kevinexplainedtheenvironmentaleffectsofthelanddevelopmentin
Florida,asitdestroyedahugepercentageofourwetlands.Now,becauseofthewetlanddamage,
therearefloodingissuesinmuchofthelandthatwaspreviouslywatershed.
Later,weworkedoncleaningupdebris.Whenwefinished,MichaelandIwalkedaround
thesandhillenvironmentinthebotanicalgardenstobrainstormonourprojectformakingsome
informativesigns.Wedecidedtomakethreelargesignsincludingafewbasicpictures.Eachof
thesignswillfocusonacertainaspectofthesandhillenvironment.Onewillbeforcommon
animals,anotherwillbeforcommonplants,andthethirdwillcoverabioticcharacteristicssuch
asrainfall,soil,climate,etc.
Observations
:LakeBehnkelookedverycleancomparedtomostotherbodiesofwateron
campus,soIwassurprisedtolearnthatitwasalsomostlymanmadeaswellasbeingaretention
pond.Thenagain,perhapstherunofftendstobefromthestreetratherthanfromfarms,so
perhapssinceitisgasandoilrunoffinsteadoffertilizer,itdoesntcontributetothealgalgrowth.
Iwouldstillthinktherewouldbesomesignsofpollution,thoughIamnottooknowledgeable
aboutrunofffromstreets.

Project:MaintainingtheFence

:Theentiredaywasspentcleaningupthesouthfacingfenceofthebotanicalgardens.
Alongthesouthfacingfenceofthebotanicalgardens,therearegrapevines.Thesevinescover
muchofthefence.ThesegrapevinesaretheonlyplantthatKevinwantsonthefences,some
andsomeothersclearedouteverythingthatwasntagrapevine.Thisincludedsmallchinaberry
trees,skunkvines,smallcherrytrees,amongafewothers.Someofthetreesgrewfusedintothe
fence,sothereissomewoodstillonthefence.
Observations
:Thechinaberrieshadveryextensiverootsystemswhichmadeitverydifficultto
removethem.Weendedupdiggingdeeparoundandunderthetrees,andthenusinganaxetocut
offthelargeroots.Then,wewereabletopullitoutwiththehelpofasaw.Theskunkvinegot
itsnamefromtheterriblesmellthattheplanthas,thoughitcanonlybesmelledwhentheplantis
cut.

:Westartedoutthedaybyremovingadead,fallenpalmtree.After,weprunedavery
largebush.Also,thebushwasovertakingapalmtree,andKevinwantedthebushtobetrimmed
soitwasnttouchingorevennearthetree.Inordertodothis,weusedaladderagainstthepalm
treeatmultipleangles,andtrimmeditthatway.Afterwecompletedthistask,weweededaround
anotherbushandtrimmeditback.Then,wecleanedupplantdebris,andthereweremultiple
truckloadsasthefrontofthegardenswereheavilymaintained.
Observations
:Whilecleaningthedebris,Inoticedthatthebranchesfromtheliveoakwere
muchheavierthananyoftheothertypesofwood.Iknewoakswerehardwood,butIhadno
ideahowheavyandstrongtheliveoakswoodwas.Itissurprisinghowlargetheycanget,even
withsomebranchesrunningparalleltothegroundforagooddistance.Theyarestrongand
mightytrees!

:Westartedoffthedaywithpruningvinesonthe
southborderofthebotanicalgardens.Weremovedachunkof
thevinesaswellastakingbackanothersectionofthevines
awayfromgrowingintothenearbybushes.Also,weremoved
moreplantsonthefencethatwerenotgrapevines.Therestof
thedaywasspentonthePhenologyproject.Wewalkedaround
thegardensidentifyingalloftheplantsthatwillbepartofthephenologyproject.Therewere
many,andsometimesitwasdifficultfindingthelabeledplantasthelabelswerentplaced
extremelyprecise.
Observations
:Manywerealsomislabeled.Forexample,onthemap,someofthesabalpalms
werelabeledassawpalmettos.Also,someoftheslashandlongleafpinesweremislabeled.Also,
acoupleofthetreesweredead,sotheyhadtoberemovedfromtheproject.Kevinshowedus
howmanyoftheoaksformhybrids,especiallyliveoakandlaureloak.Also,Kevinexplained
thatthereisliveoakandsandliveoak.Iaskedwhatthedifferencewas,andKevinexplained
howliveoakgetstoabout80feet,whilesandliveoakgetstoabout60feet.Ifinditsurprising
howsuchalittledifferencecanseparatethemintodifferentspecies.

middle.
Observations

rootswhilediggingtheholes.It
madeitverydifficultastheroots
weretosomeimportanttrees,and
wedidnotwanttoharmthetrees.Somerootshadtobedestroyed,butwedidavoidthelarger
roots.

:Westartedoffthedaymulchingtheareaswherethetreeswereplantedtheday
before.Nowthetreeareaislabeledandcomplete.After,wewenttothearoidgarden.Atreethat
branchedoverthearoidgardenhadafewdeadbranches,andtheyweretorndown.Theproblem
was,thesebrancheswereprovidinglotsofshadetothearoids,whichcannotliveinfullsun.So,
webuiltsomeshadeclothoverthearoidgardenastemporarycoveruntilsomethingmore
permanentcanbedone.Theendofthedaywasspentdrivingaroundthegardenspickingup
debris.
Observations
:Thearoidswerealreadybeginningtogetsundamage.Theonesinthemost
sunnyareasofthegardenwereyellowingandhadbrownspots.Kevinpointedoutthatthatwas
thesundamage.

:WhenIarrived,Kevinwaswalkingaroundthegardenwithmyfellowinternsshowing
usdifferenttypesofspiderscommonlyfoundinthegardens.Heshowedusbrownwindows,
huntsmanspiders,wolfspiders,orbweavers,andbananaspiders.Then,itstarteddrizzling,sowe
tookcover.WegotontothetopicofGIS,andKevintoldusmanyneatthingsaboutit.Ihave
beeninterestedinGIS,andKevinbroughtupthatwehaveaGIScertificateprogram.Iasked
somequestionsaboutit,andnowIamconsideringitforthespring.Itneverstoppedraining,so
wehadtocallitadayearly.
Observations
:GIShasalwaysintriguedme.Ilovegeographyandmaps,andIloveexploring
mapswithdata(climate,demographics,landuse,etc.).IattemptedtotakeaGIScoursethispast
spring,butIfoundoutitwaswaytooexpensiveasitwasagraduatelevelcourse.Iwilltalkto
myadvisoraboutplanningtogetthecertificateasitwillbeveryusefulformyplannedcareer
(urbanplanning&sustainabledevelopment).Itshouldbeworththedebtaswellasitshould
increasemyemployability.

whatcleansthesandhillhabitatsout,butobviouslywecannotletthesandhillareaatthe
botanicalgardensburn.So,wehavetodothecleaningthatthefirewouldotherwisedo.

beentakencareofforaverylongtime.Itisahightrafficareaforthestaff,andIthinkitwasa
greatthingthatwecleaneditupsincemuchofthestaffarealooksunsightly.

pipe.WhenIdid,helookedoverthepipeand
askedmetouncovermore.Ittookhoursof
diggingandconsultingbeforethepipewas
uncoveredandamputated.Now,oncethecorrect
pieceispurchased,thepipecanbefixed.
Observations
:Thepipewasaround50yearsold
accordingtoKevin.Hesaidthatwedonotuse
thesamematerialanymore,asthispipewas
madeoutofaprimitiveorpredecessortopvc.An
initialhypothesiswasthatarootgrew,pushing
upthepipecreatingacrack.Thiswasfoundnot
tobethecaseastherewasnorootfound.

Then,Dr.LaurieWalkerorderedpizzaforeveryoneworkingatthegardens.IsatnexttoDr.
Walkerandwetalkedaboutenvironmentalscience,plantawareness,greenroofs,energy
efficientbuildings,GIS,issueswiththegreenenergyfeemanagement,solarpanelsoverparking
lots,andurbanplanning.
Observations
:TheconversationwithDr.Walkerwasveryengaging.Icouldwritealotaboutit,
buttokeepitbrief,ahighlightwastalkingabouturbanplanning.ItissomethingIamseriously
consideringafterIgraduate,andDr.Walkertalkedabouthowitisaverygoodfieldfor
environmentalscientistsandhowsustainabilitycanbetiedintourbanplanning.Ihaveafriend
whoworksatCUTR,andIaskedhimaboutinternshipopportunities.HopefullyIcansecure
somethingsoonforfall.

Todaywasthedaythatthehoneywas
extractedfromtwobeehives,processed,and
stored.First,thebeehivesweregassedtocalm
thebees.Unfortunately,thefirstbeehivewe
openedwasdestroyedbywaxmoths.Itmust
havehappenedrecentlyasthehivewas
checkedonlyamonthago.Thereweretwo
otherhivesthatweextractedsuccessfully.We
loadedupthehivesontothetruckalongwith
someextractionequipmentandwenttoNES
323inwhichwedidtheextractionprocess.
Wecutoffthetopofeachshelftorevealthehoneyunderneath.Then,weputtheshelvesinthe
centrifugeandcrankedthehoneyoutintoabucket,passingthroughafilter.Afterthehoneygets
storedinthebucket,itislefttositforacoupleofweekssothatanythingelseinthehoneyfloats
tothetop,whereitisthenscrappedoff.
Observations
:Thehivethatwasattackedbywaxmothswasunfortunate.Themothlarvaewere
everywhere,eatingallofthewax.Thebeesthatwereinthehivewerejustforagersfromother
coloniestakingthehoney,andtheoriginalbeesmostlikelyevacuatedsometimebefore.Itwas
veryinterestinglearningabouttheextractionprocess,anditwassurprisinglyeasy.Anotherthing
thatsurprisedmewasthesheeramountofhoneythatcomesfromeachhive.NES323wasfull
ofbees!Also,poorLaurieWalkerhadabeeflyinhermouth,anditstungherlipasshewas
spittingitout.Herlipandfaceswelledup.Weallhadatasteofthefreshhoney,anditwas
delicious.Thehoneyshouldgoonsaleatthegardensinacoupleofmonths.
