Artifact #7: Smart Board Lesson Plan Science EDU 571 Technology in the classroom

Overview
This artifact is the first in focusing on my skills to use technology in a classroom
effectively. The goal of this project was to design an interactive lesson using the SMART board
system. Using a story book written by a popular childhood author as a base, we were to create a
specific lesson adhering to a specific subject. My story book was Just Fishing with Grandma by
Mercer Mayer and it was a base for a science lesson covering Grade 1 curriculum. Students
would be first read the text either by the teacher or another student and then progress through the
lesson. When doing so students would navigate a series of enjoyable, interactive slides that
required hands on attempts investigating different environmental topics. Each slide is designed
to be manipulated to discover, organize or discuss information relating to the curriculum.
With regard to teacher competencies the artifact addresses my ability to use educational
technology effectively to create a lesson plan that enhances the knowledge of each student. In
producing said lesson it shows that I have mastered the basics of using the SMART Board which
is an effective piece of educational technology commonly found in many classrooms both here in
Canada and the United States. Incorporated into the artifact are many ways to assess student
progress and the design of the SMART board pages use self-correcting activities. This is done
specifically to give immediate feedback, allowing the instructor opportunities for further
instruction and clarification. The slide titled Feed the fish has students move specific foods
into the fishs mouth. The incorrect food will bounce off the fish showing an incorrect
selection.
When a student interacts with this SMART Board lesson, they become immersed in the
learning environment. They become free to manipulate objects to make them work on the

screen. If things dont line up then students are free to adjust their work and discuss with help or
input from the teacher or other students. This describes what Bruner referred to as Discovery
Learning. The SMART Board lesson lets students discover facts and relations for themselves in
a way that is inquiry based. This is especially important because when a student has practice
questioning and manipulating different variables they develop an inquisitive mind. And this is a
crucial skill to have when building upon prior knowledge from a constructionist point of view.
Connections to Standards
INTASC STANDARDS
INTASC Standards 1 8 apply to this artifact:
Standard #1: Learner Development is encouraged by allowing them an interactive
platform to manipulate and change information creatively.
Standard #2: Learner Differences are addressed by different slides that have various ways
to interact with the material. Variations in student understanding are accounted for in the slides
and allows for instruction at various levels depending on the student.
Standard #3: Learning Environments are enhanced by the introduction of this
technological interactive learning space that students can jump into.
Standard #4: Content knowledge is demonstrated by incorporating the appropriate grade
level information into the slides.
Standard #5: The application of content is shown by combining the standards used by the
NYS P-12 Common Core standards and the Ontario ELA curriculum in new and creative
interactions between student and SMART board.

Standard #6: Assessments run throughout the SMART board presentation because of the
self-correcting set up of the slides. If students select the SMART board answer incorrectly it will
bounce them out.
Standard #7: Planning for instruction is show here by using the curriculum and using it
creatively to make engaging slides that allow for building of ideas in a spiraling manner.
NYS Code of Ethics for Educators:
This SMART board shows that I am able to create technological materials that guide and
nurture students so they progress with the material in a challenging environment. Principles 1
and 2 are described above.
P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards:
The NYS Common Core learning standards that apply to this artifact are as follows.
Standard Strand Science: Foundational Skills (K-5) Grade 1: Topic: Presentation of knowledge
and ideas #4. Standard Strand Science: Foundational Skills (K-5) Grade 1: Topic:
Comprehension and collaboration. #2.
NYS Learning Standards:
Ontario Ministry of Education Expectation:
The Ontario Ministry of Education 1-8 science curriculum standards that apply to this
artifact are for Grade 1. The topic is understanding basic concepts.
TEAC/CAEP Claims:
TEAC claims # 1 and #2 apply to this artifact. Knowledge of subject matter is shown in
the creation of slides that allow students to interact with the content. This is done by allowing
maximum student interaction with the material which shows effective best teaching practices.
ISTE Standards for Teachers and Students (ISTE):

The ISTE teacher standards that apply to this artifact are numbers 1 3. The creation of
the SMART board science lesson plan facilitates and inspires student to interact with the
material. The design and development of the SMART board is a digital learning experience and
uses numerous formative assessments.
Council for Exceptional Children (ECE):
C.E.C standard 1.1 and 1.3 apply to this artifact. The manipulative nature, tactile and
auditory components of the presentation maximizes the learning of all students. The formative
assessments that run throughout the SMART board provide quick feedback that can help guide
instruction by the teacher.
