We recently performed a self-evaluation on the media center at ASHS. The GLMA & GLA 2013 Library Media
Program Self-Evaluation Rubric was used as an indicator for the evaluation. The rubric covered five different areas
such as student achievement and instruction, staffing, facilities and resources, administrative support, and staff
development. There were three different categories for each area which were Basic, Proficient, or
Exemplary. There were 21 self-evaluation measures, the ASHS Media Center received a rating of Basic in
nine categories, a rating of Proficient two categories, and a rating of Exemplary in ten categories.
An action plan has been developed to bring basic ratings to proficient and proficient ratings to exemplary. Please
see the attached information which contains the information from rubric as well as the plan to move the areas to
the recommended rating.
12.Streaming video is used throughout the school to support the curriculum. Interactive
whiteboards and computers are used for teaching and learning throughout the school.
A central electronic media distribution system is also available.
Recommendations: The shelves will be rearranged to create space. The wall leading to two
additional unused classrooms will be knocked down to create more space. The standards for 12
are the same for basic and proficient. The recommendation would be to have white boards
installed in the media center.
15. One of the national educational technology goals states: Effective and engaging software
and on-line
resources will be an integral part of every schools curriculum. The GALILEO Virtual Library
provides
Georgia students and teachers access to exceptional on-line resources at no
cost to the local school district.
Recommendations: Conduct regular training on Galileo for students and staff, Staff will be kept abreast of
all aspects of Galileo.
Category 5 Administrative Support 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20
16.The local system superintendent shall appoint a system media contact person (SMCP) to serve as a
liaison to the department.
Recommendation: The local board should appoint a liaison to maintain contact among the media
specialist. Although there is no current liaison the media specialist call and meet together monthly to keep
abreast of any issues.
17. Administrative staff support at both the school and district levels is essential for the development of a
strong library media program.
Recommendations: The school principal and district administrators take an active role in
encouraging teachers to integrate library media resources into the curriculum. School,
department, and district level administrators meet regularly with the Library Media Specialist.
18.The board of education should adopt a library media policy that provides for the
establishment of a media committee at the system level and at each school. The committee would
make recommendations and decisions relating to planning, operation, evaluation, and
improvement of the library media program. This committee will evaluate library media services
and develop a multi-year media plan for budget services and priorities.
Recommendations:
A library media advisory should be formed and meet twice a
year. Planning and evaluation of the library media program will be carried out on a regular basis.
19. Local Board approved library media policy is current. This policy requires development of
procedures for the school system and for selecting materials locally, handling requests for
reconsideration of materials, considering gifts of instructional resources, using non-school owned
materials, and complying with the copyright law.
Recommendations:
The board in conjunction with the media committee should develop system wide procedures for
the selection of materials, handling requests for reconsideration of materials, considering gifts of
instructional resources, using non-school owned materials, and complying with the copyright
law. A clear statement on intellectual freedom should be posted in every media center.
20. Each local school system shall spend 100 percent of the funds designated for library media
center
Recommendation: Increase funding for the library media center. The media specialist should work in
conjunction with the district administrators to plan the media center budget. The media specialist will
complete strategic planning on a regular basis and continually seek other avenues of funding for the
media center.
